i was raised in the truth.. it was about six weeks past my fifth birthday when my mother was contacted by "jehovah's people" and a few months short of my sixth when she got baptized a half year later.

that was the summer of 1962.. because of my experience with the truth from such an innocent age when thought patterns were first being formed, one of the tricks that was played on me one of the lies that was passed along is that some of those of my generation happened to be among the most fortunate of all of mankind since some of us would never die.

if i did my best; if i tried hard enough and did everything that was within my power to do; if i found favor with the most high god, i might well be one of those who'd never taste death at all but live right through this world's end into a global paradise.

Knowing that there is no future event or afterlife to live for means we don't put today on "hold". We live everyday.....yes LIVE it!!

That's very energising. One can sit and feel like we have no meaning in life (as most thinkers have felt at some point) because of the discovery that religion/god is a fairy tale. On the other hand we can also realize that "hell I only have one turn" and I sure as heck am going to try and have fun everyday.

i don't believe in re-inventing the wheel.

arguments about atheism, chronology, trinity, evolution can go on forever.. i like to bring up positions that are unpopular on this forum because most of the people here have given up their examination of certain issues assuming that they have "now" got the real truth.. the lack of critical thinking that is the cause of involvement in off-beat religions can lead to gullibility in other areas.

the stupid knee-jerk accusations i got when i attacked the molestation issue is typical.

i have to ask this although i have a feeling i dont really want to read the responses but anyway.

i talked to several people here today who dont believe there is a god at all.

this is disturbing!

Of course people can believe in what they want.

When I say I have a "personal relationship with Tinkerbell" please don't mock me...Please don't think I am lacking in anyway - I cannot prove to you that she exists but I believe she does and she has comforted me everytime I have prayed.

Fair is fair and Tinkerbell is my eternal saviour.

So Proplog you have argued till green stuff oozed from your gills over a semantic issue. Is it a cult or isn't it?

All you have succeeded in convincing me of so far is that you are some disgruntled old man who likes to push people's buttons without any substance behind your way of thinking (to use the word liberally). Let's say that the word cult is misapplied (although I am of the bent that says all religion is a cult and that Marx was right on one thing at least) so what is left of your argument? Have you succeeded in anything. As I said in another thread I always ask the next question - so the next question/s to you:

Are the beliefs of JW's harmful?

Are the beliefs and practices of JW's unkind? Do the reults of their beliefs breakup families unnecessarily?

Do the mthods used by JW's parallel to the methods used in mind-control or in brainwashing techniques?

Are they goverend by fear?

Why don't you ask the important questions?

Since we atheists are pre-judged as offensive it becomes a free for all for us to live up to the name?

Actually it is the religious types that need the moral yardsticks and then take such yardstick and proceed to beat up all the non-believers. Or they act all offended because they are questioned on the logic behind their beliefs.

Now go ahead and say that beliefs don't require logic. That's fine - but then forgive me for finding that humorous or sad. If beliefs govern lives surely they should have some sound logical foundation?

Being able to NOT have beliefs and live according to a moral/ethical code is much easier as it allows the non-believer to take responsibility for their own actions. when something can be blamed on nonsense like "it's God's will" or when mourning a dead relative they say "God took him" - that's like taking a plea of insanity.

True people are free to believe what they like - freedom is the most important thing there is. Discovering mental freedom - one unencumbered by false belief (or unproven belief) is the greatest thing in the world, because like Ab pointed out it is energizing because we realize this is the only shot we have at life so we live each day like its our last. We don't sit around wasting our lives based on some future "Armageddon" or some concept of an afterlife. I want to taste life NOW and I want to gorge myself on what it has to offer!!!

This argument is bass-ackwards. The onus is not on people to disprove that god exists, rather it is on God and his believers to prove he exists. this is especially true since religion/belief in the god of the Bible carries with it a moral imperative - making the believers invest time, money and sacrifice.

The title - look at it: it contains the phrase "believe in...". Why should I invest my life in a belief? Surely something as important as my life investment requires a fact instead of a belief. If that fact cannot be clearly and easily established then all you are asking for is lots of heartache, deceipt and disappointment.

How emotionally wrenching is it to try and derive comfort from the fact that you "believe" some God is looking out for you? Surely, at some point you want to study probability and ask yourself - does God exist? If I cannot prove it as a FACT and I need to (and have tried many times) to draw comfort in this God - what is the probability of further disappointment? At some point is don;t you ask yourself "is God psychosomatic?"
