Flower,
You did good, truly. What else can we do but to speak our feelings and our truth?

what do you think?
I remember a Watchtower or Awake life story article where this subject came up. It said that the anointed alcoholic brother in the story would be monitored at home by his friends the rest of the evening to make sure he did not fall back into his drinking habit.
Its very naive though to think that one night of observation by the brothers would be enough to combat the breaking of his habit after that first drink.

SixofNine,
Everything's perpective, that could be an elder tossing or a publisher tossing. From my point of view the latter is more likely to happen than the former.
Sabrina
now that i have your attention.
with the total anonymity available on-line, is it truly cheating, to flirt with, tease, or even "have sex" with someone via your computer?
is this the same as actually committing adultery, or is it just generally "harmless" fun?
Yeah, I know, you probably didn't expect a reply from me.
Well, as you might expect I come down on the more conservative side and feel that if I truly love someone I also respect our relationship and our love and would not engage in flirting with anyone else. I know that's old fashion and stuff but that's just the way I feel.

one way the watchtower gets into people's heads is by making them feel that they're unworthy, not good enough, inferior.
" that is the chant of circuit overseers and elders all around the world.
nobody could keep up the pace that the watchtower has given its followers.
The Society doesn't know the word "enough" only the words, "do more, more, more and after that even more!"
And if we did do everything they said, well the phrase "what you have done is only what you should have done" is thrown back at us with no "well done good and faithfull slave" from any of the brothers or the Watchtower itself.

If you have a problem with Elders all being men, go and bitch about it at the KH - it's nothing to do with us! We can't help who was and who wasn't an elder and they should be welcomed just as everyone else is.
I don't think anyone on this thread had a "problem with Elders all being men." Turning this into a women verses men problem is way off the mark in my opinion. Also no one said elders should not be as welcome here as anyone else.
Our past experiences in the Organization were for many of us torturous and that torture was implemented by those who abused their authority as Elders. It was the abuse of their authority that brings to mind the horror of that experience, not the fact that they were men! The abuse of authority whether from men or women causes permanent harm and its that harm that echoes here not the fact that they were men.
Elder lists divide people who are leaving a place where titles like Elder, CO, DO, made many of us either feel worthless or worse, abused. I understand the reason for the list and I hope it serves the purpose that was intended but I think anyone who finds the list objectionable because of past abuses or for other reasons should not be castigated for it. I thought that's why we were here to rejoice breaking out of the suffocating mold of the follow the leader religion we were in and to help one another in some way.
Having said that, I think this thread will be very good for lurking elders. It's good for them to know that former elders post here and its also good for them to see the amount of hurt and anger caused by the abuse of authority exercised by many Elders. So, all in all, except for what happened between Big Tex and Talesin, I think this thread turned out good and will serve a good purpose. Most JWs are victims of victims and followers of followers as Br. Franz said in his book, whether publisher or elder we all suffered in some way.

If there were "observers" from these other JW associations at the U.N. conference wouldn't that prove that the Watchtower's U.N. involvement was known by brothers outside of Bethel? Brothers in at least 3 other assoications or corps. of the Watchtower?

Hawk,
It is easy to make a mistake with this since the U.N. itself called these organizations, other non-governmental organizations.
Still it is very interesting that the Watchtower had other Watchtower Associations, Corporations or whatever involved with U.N. conferences.
Sorry if my post caused some harm or confusion.
Sabrina
Edited to add: This shows that other Branches were well aware of the Watchtower's association with the U.N.

The word "Elder" leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Every congregation I ever attended had overbearing, controlling, incompetent, unChritian and at times even violent elders. So I can understand that even to hint that there is something beneficial to listing former elders is something that would bring up bad feelings. It would be like listing the names of reformed Gestapo on a Jewish board, nice but not a good idea.
I'm not saying all the elders were bad just that the elders did and do more harm than good.
