When we pray we are in reality seeking God's spirit. Why? Because we lack. What do we lack? Life.
What life? Spiritual and physical life. We are not complete, we are not finished until we find that life.
But you do not believe as I do and so I am waiting for the other shoe to fall.

In Jesus' model prayer he asked for our daily bread and forgiveness. In John 17 he asked for God to protect his disciples from the evil one.
It is the spiritual we seek because it is only the spirit which gives life. It is God we seek because he loves us. It is our brother we seek because we love him. Money, health, material things, biblical truths, and even wisdom do not in themselves give us life or bring us closer to God. It is God you must seek not the things you mentioned.

But Jonah shows that prophecies of divine judgment are not absolute and may be averted depending on our actions. I think Jonah gives the Universalist a biblical basis for arguing that despite all the prophecies of a coming judgment, these may eventually be rendered null and void -- given enough time.

Thanks for that excellent commentary on the story of Jonah.
From a Biblical point of view the story of Jonah highlights several truths:
1. When God anoints or sends a prophet he is responsible to God to do as God directs.
2. Jonah's fears were given consideration. In his case he failed because he feared for his own personal reputation not because he listened to or obeyed another man rather than God as the other prophet you mentioned did. He was not killed by the fish he was delivered from his own wrong course and from death and made to continue his mission regardless of his fear. God considers disobedience caused by human fears and frailty different than disobedience caused by obeying a man's voice rather than God's.
3. Christians who preach Armageddon and destruction, without even a direct commission as Jonah had, should remember Jonah and the lesson that God's word is his word and if he should decide to change it he very well can and will. Religious hypocrites who revel in the destruction of the wicked will be just as disappointed as Jonah when the "wicked" are not all destroyed but rather are loved and shown mercy. But at least Jonah was honest with his God. Religious hypocrites though are not honest with God and their fate will be much worse than that of the very people they wrongly condemn.
The story of Jonah was never a historical story but a beautiful lesson which teaches that God's mercy triumphs even over his word. And man's need to do the same as his God and allow mercy to triumph over our own word.

chanced upon this website a few days ago, and perhaps spent most of my waking hours (since then) reading, and certainly identifying with, quite a lot of it.
i have also learned a few things i was unaware of - i know this is ''old hat'' to all of you, but i wasn't aware of the un ngo thing.. i was saddened reading many posts - mostly trying to get human compassion (from elders who hold the trump cards - dealt by....?).
i read with interest josephus's post no.313, and goldminer's 1st posting - both drawing attention to how lives have been wasted due to false prohesy - and i thought (after reading how the society is claiming compensation for surviving - or dead!

As for Moses and the foreskin problem. Would it have been better to send Moses to tell Pharoah to listen up and fly right when Moses himself had not done so? If the Bible record said that Moses had failed to circumcise his child but Jehovah told him, "Hey, that's okay Mo baby you're my fave guy and I'm gonna let you and your son off on this one. Now go tell that rat Pharoah if he doesn't listen to me I'm gonna kill his son," then a charge of favortism and hypocrisy would be the discussion here. Before Moses went to tell Pharoah to listen to God, he himself also had to listen to God. That's all.
