i have been in touch today with an old school friend, after around 20 years.
his mom used to be a jw, but became a christian years before he was born, i always remember him as having a faith, but it was something that during his teen years he put to one side.. anyway this brings me around to today.
we got in touch recently through facebook, turns out he only lives 5 minutes away so i went around today to see him.. we had a great conversation, catching up.

"when our own thoughts are forbidden, when our questions are not allowed and our doubts are punished, when contacts and friendships outside of the organization are censored, we are being abused for an end that never justifies its means.
when our heart aches knowing we have made friendships and secret attachments that will be forever forbidden if we leave, we are in danger.
when we consider staying in a group because we cannot bear the loss, disappointment and sorrow our leaving will cause for ourselves and those we have come to love, we are in a cult.
When I first started to fade, and my Wife thought I was "leaving the truth", I printed that quote off and left it on the table, not intentionally, my Wife read it and thought it was aimed at JW's !!!!! (she didn't see the attribution,in small print)
How telling is that? She has since come a long way and is fading with me,and dosn't wince now when I call Dubs a cult.
Great quote Wing! and it may help others see,as it did my wife.
Thanks

the bbc in the u.k broadcast a programme on the 18th of feb. on bbc2 called "trouble in amish paradise" it is about an amish family who start to realise that all the rule following is keeping them from faith in jesus, and how the amish bishops react to independant bible study etc.. the parallels of attitude "we are ex-communicating you for ignoring our rules, not for studying the bible" are quite stunning.. the family that is followed during the prog.
are really lovely people,.
and when it comes down to just being christian, even though the family is df'd, the amish come up trumps!

u2's vienna comeback gig snubbed by jehovah's witnesses.

I seem to remember there was scandal before Maria and Chas split up,something about his claim that he touched sisters like a jelly fish?
(is my memory playing tricks that sounds silly?)

how did you come to the final decision to get out of her (the organization, "mother")?
?.
This is a BTTT and a thanks to Minimus for the thread,I think it is an important one,as it shows how many reasons there are to doubt and therefore leave the "Troof"

p.s more personal stories ,even if similar to those posted, will show Lurkers where the problems lie! (they will also satiate a nosy old fart like me)

Mine was a real obscure thing, when they claimed that members of the 144,000 in heaven who they said formed part of the 24 elders of Revelation were sending them messages!!! I thought" this is nonsense",and guess what ,it sure was! That made me look at their claims in general, and I came to the conclusion they were blasphemously usurping the position of Jesus himself.
I then found JWD and was amazed at some of the stuff that was said,WT Wizard made my jaw drop! but I soon became a god ole 'postate and now I am a Born Again alcoholic,so theres progress!

why aren't members of your institute publishing their ideas in prominent peer-reviewed journals such as science, nature, or the proceedings of the national academy of sciences?
if you want to be taken seriously by scientists and scholars, this is where you need to publish.
Dear Caedes, No I would not support the teaching of wacky ideas alongside,in the sense of giving them credence, but it does help if you know what these things are so as not to waste time on them,so educators cannot be restrained from even a mention of them.
But what I would love to see is an education system that encourages an Einstein or Stephen Hawking to think free of the constraints that can be imposed by thinking that a scientific fact cannot be overturned, hence the need to see that erroneous theories like fixed Continents, for example, can be overthrown once Tectonic plates were understood.
So many young people are still vulnerable due to educators not doing very well, hence cults recruiting in Uni's etc.

p.s If only I had been taught well enough the art of critical thinking, and how to act on it, I would not have spent so long in the Dub. Cult!

Dear Caedes,
I probably did not make my concerns clear, firstly I was referring to the way things are presented by poor educators and the Press ,T.v etc,"as fact ,that cannot be proven empirically" Many of these things may well be "fact" in the scientific sense, but the false impression is given,to impressionable youngsters, that nothing more is to be learned on the subject, and yet these are the minds most likely to produce new hypotheses for the scientific world to work with.
As to the falsification of evidence,or witholding of data,to advance ones own theory there are plenty of examples.A particular instance which was motivated by a desire not to upset Scientific Orthodoxy lies far back in the recessses of my strange mind,if I can drag it out I will,it maybe came from an Awake magazine or something so may not bear scrutiny! You were right to call me on that one!
My motive in posting what I did is to try to support the many who feel that educators should be free to teach Evolution Theory as scientific fact, but also free to teach an examination of an opposing view however wacky so the student can see all sides.
Certainly Creationism should not be taught as scientific, where are the facts?
Hence discussion of creationism may not be appropriate in a science class, why waste time?
A well rounded education should encourage the open mind in the scientific sense of considering any possibility presented, in the light of the evidence.
