My Letter to local Newspapaer - Your Feedback Please?

my local congregation has been in the news this week following a successful application for planning permission for a quick build.

a local vicar objected because the application described it as a building for "christain worship".. .

Dear Cofty, what a great letter ! I do hope it is published !

My only observation is that your idea of including a link to a site is excellent, I would suggest only one, and that would be JW Facts, the reason being I feel that this site is easier to understand and navigate for a non-JW, and may save somebody, Freeminds is great, but more for Ex-JW's, and has a Christian agenda.

Also, one or two of your old friends from the K.H may be tempted by its name, they may think, "I'll find some errors in those "facts" " and have a look.

Perhaps a phrase to introduce the site, such as "this site is of immense help in understanding the methods and errors of this high-control group".

Edited to say : I do think it would be harder hitting to say something like "their denial that Jesus is divine" or something similar, rather than Arian Controversy, and it may resonate with ordinary Christians that JW's are weird ! After all it is the virtually uneducated that JW's mainly target, so maybe after saying you were ejected for Apostasy(people may not know what it is according to JW's) perhaps add "merely disagreeing with some of their strange ideas". Just my two cents.

i think we are to a degree but i think its on a different level to the americans.

the impression i get (from watching us tv and news) is that the majority of americans come across as being proud to be american and quite a possitive nation.

whereas us brits will display pride as a nation when we have to.

I don't give a turd exactly how many rules they have, or what they are, but it is sufficient to know they have a Law Code at least twice as long as the Mosaic one, this condemns them as not being followers of Jesus.

he found christian freedom after leaving the wt.

he flew to bethel in 1981 to try and speak with the govenrning body but they refused.

he went to alabama and spoke with peter gregerson and ray franz and found out the truth about the truth.

He has gone from being a deluded JW to a deluded creationist, a pity, he seems a lively and sincere guy.

He just needs to study what he is condemning, his premise that "Evolution" denies a first cause misunderstands what Evolutinary Theory is all about.

Abiogenesis is really his target, plus his argument that complexity proves a designer has been done and dusted.

Just ranting that the greatest scientific theory we have is "ridiculous" without offering evidence is not convincing.

It is a shame that the guy has not educated himself, or moved on much, since leaving the WT all those years ago.

as i have sunken to a new low in condescending posts (according to botchtowersociety, who truthfully is an expert on all things bullshit), it did occur to me that discussions, debates, and mud slinging insult matches on this board often have a common root.. let me put out there that i am not an atheist, nor an agnostic.

frankly, i respect your right to believe that god is a trinity.

that he is jesus.

An old gentleman I know said he believed in God because there was so much love in the world. That is not an argument that convinces me, but it fits well with many people who simply have a gut feeling that there is "something out there".

my old kingdom hall at berwick-on-tweed has finally been sold to an art dealer after being on the market for a couple of years.. this week they were granted planning permission for a quick build on a site in a village just outside the town.

"rev matthew knox, vicar of tweedmouth and priest in charge of st peters church in scremerston, argued the plan should be turned down because it is not a place of christian worship as stated in the application.".

the story is the front page headline today in my local paper, the berwick advertiser.. here is a couple of gems from the article... "it is not part of churches together in berwick, it has its own translation of the bible and to my knowledge discourages independent thinking with the real threat of members being shunned by all other members if they dispute their governing bodys official doctrine.".

I bet they would cavil if it were for Satan worship though !

If you do write Cofty, I would also major on how the application is dishonest, whether the facts matter or not, the dishonesty may be enough to get a rejection, as the planning comm. were not voting for what they thought they were.

It's interesting re the Trinity, that the best explanation of the doctrine I ever read was by a Christadelphian theologian, and they do not support the doctrine, I guess he decided to get a good grasp of the doctrine before he rejected it, something JW's have never done.

The WT's "Trinity" brochure was the first time I came across their dishonest quoting, they had made it look as though the DD they were quoting cast doubt on the doctrine, but I had the full quote in my possesion, and he was a Trinitarian through and through.

Good thread ATJ, I agree that for those of us who, at best, would say Jesus may have been a real historical figure, but even so was just amortal man, the very best Theo. arguments are a waste of time , believers may find them interesting though.

I think that some who have left the WT, but would still describe themselves as believing Christians, retain some of the JW attitude that we must believe as they do or we are damned, and anyone who does not believe exactly as they do must be corrected, what nonsense !

It annoys me too, the arrogant way some believers present their faith as though it is fact, saying "God will...." do this or that, or He says" or "thinks" this or that, as far as I am concerned, their God is a fictional character, and I "don't give a shit", to use your elegant phrase, what he "thinks".

Common Misconceptions Re: Evolution

this is another cut and paste, but i make no apology (unless it has been posted on here already), as it is very informative.

evolution is one of the best supported, most elegant, and most powerful theories in all of science.

as it stands, it is the best explanation that we have for the diversity of life on earth.

What has been pointed out to Creationists of various hues, Ad Nauseum, is the common usage of the word theory, as in "I have a theory that women make better drivers than men", is not the usage the word Theory has in Science.

Some of this ignorance as to its meaning seems to spill over in to threads on here from time to time. Prof. Dawkins proposed in one of his books that the word

"Theorem" be borrowed from mathematics, as it conveys the idea of what a scientific Theory actually is a lot better, but the idea never caught on.

So many people argue from a position of ignorance, they would be better employed in studying what Evolution Science really is than arguing about a subject they know so little of.

I should know. Caedes set me straight about my ignorance when I first joined this site, so, I went off and educated myself.

Yearning to be children

i heard at quote at my graduation in 2008 from high school.it went like this " kids yearn to grow up because they feel the restrictions of being children and yearn to be children when they are adults".

i wonder to myself do you as adults get more mean and cynical as we get older?.

It's strange , but since leaving the WT I have become a split personality. I do not suffer fools gladly, will point out logical fallacies, be very grumpy about a lot of things, especially other peoples driving, and I will speak my mind much more.

The other personality is very tolerant of other peoples view point unless it is harmful to others, I am more compassionate and see why people are as they are, and, most importantly I have re-kindled a childlike joy in life and in learning.

I find I can live with both aspects of myself quite happily, but it makes for some difficult internal conversations.
