The only consequence is that they may have blown their right to further extension of time to file.

Gayle,
This is the initial written brief wherein the WTS states its reason(s) for making the appeal. Usually this involves a procedural error made by the lower court that could have the force and effect of having the case overturned. There are other less-dire results that can come from this if WTS prevails. On the other hand, if WTS loses its appeal, these extensions can work against it vis a vis interest accruing on the judgment. If they lose the appeal, a further appeal can be made to the California State Supreme Court. If they lose there the only thing left is the U.S. Supreme Court. Unless WTS can come up with some constitutional issues in this case, it's highly doubtful the U.S. Supreme Court would hear it.

I am exhausted emotionally.
by PaintedToeNail ini have been reading ashley judd's 'all things bitter and sweet' autobiography, and it has exhausted me.
she paints a picture of neglect and abuse from early childhood on.
as i sat reading, i realised i was identifying with so much of what she wrote.. why, when having an emotional breakdown as a teenager, major obsessive compulsive disorder, obvious depression symptoms, would you refuse to get medical help for your child?

I am so impressed by the depth of sorrow expressed by you PTN, and others in this thread. I think the cliche of ex-witnesses being bitter and too proud to deal with wrongs they experienced is completely debunked by the sincere expressions that have been made here. Anyone with normal feelings (including those Witnesses that have them) couldn't help but be moved by your expressions. Much love to you.

What were your favorite assembly foods?
by NoRegrets inso i'm young enough to not remember having hot prepared meals at assemblies, but heard all about it from my parents and the like.
but what i do remember were all of the cold sandwiches and institutional snacks and soda.
remember the food tickets we started to use?

If you thought that Shasta had to be the cheapest soft drink the Society could obtain, it discovered an even lower-priced, lower grade soft drink called Vess. I believe it was the Society's preferred brand toward the end of food arrangement. This stuff was so carbonated that you would be bloated for days afterward. Truly toxic. The unsold Vess found its way back to the Bethel rooms of the lower level workers, who would store them under their beds. It's probably still under them today.

I'm turning myself in. Lurking elders, are you listening?
by Eve Deceived ini think it's fitting for my very first post to be a thread on jw.net turning myself in to any lurking elders out there on a witch-hunt to cleanse the congregation so that god's choosen ones can "remain in god's love.
" so i'm sorry to all you awesome, truthful apostates on this site, but this thread is really intended for any lurking nazis -- i mean, the taliban -- ugh, i mean elders of the world's most "loving" cult religion.. i am an apostate.
here, i'll save you the trouble:.

Is it Kapa'a or Kapa'a'a? (Nicholas Cage, "Honeymoon in Vegas"). I'm sure the lurking elders will need to know.
Welcome!

Candace Conti Trial and the Realm of Confidentiality
by DNCall inlike soft+gentle, i just finished reading the trial transcript.
during the process of digesting what i read, i was reminded of a concept that i learned, ironically, during a phone conversation with an elder in the service department.
i dont remember what the issue was that i was calling about but i do remember him mentioning the concept of a "realm of confidentiality.

just finished reading the Candace Conti court docs
by soft+gentle ini had been reading discussions on topix about the case and decided to go see what was actually said and not said during the trial.
i'm left with several indelible impressions of the courage and honesty of candace and of her mother kathleen.. another thing is that the court was given the opportunity to really get a feel for the jw lifestyle.
the close family relationships they promote which emphasizes, for me, that if the elders had been as vigilant as they said they were they would have spotted that kendrick had become alarmingly close to candace.

s+c, I like to think of Candace as she is today, in spite of her tragic past--courageous and smart, even heroic. I also feel gratitude that she was able to connect with Rick Simons, who I believe is fighting a righteous battle not only on behalf of Candace, but many others as well.
