WT backtracking fast on Book Study -High Gas Prices
by stillajwexelder inso tonight the congregation discussed the front page of the october km -the new meeting schedule.
straight away it was emphasized it was not because of high gas prices that the meetings were being reduced.
it was pointed out that in parts of the world the brothers do not have cars so it was not high gas prices.

Has the Society ever made any mention of the insurance implications of holding official meetings in private homes? Do the Kingdom Halls' public liability insurance policies include cover for Book Studies or do they tell householders they must seek advice from their own insurers? Or have they just been turning a blind eye to it until now? Rob C

Am I reading this right?

1jesus told his disciples: "there was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.
2so he called him in and asked him, 'what is this i hear about you?

Here's my take on this one: The clue is in what is actually owed - i.e. commodities, not money. So a possibility is that suppliers to the household who have needed payment up-front have been given the payment for what was originally require by the household. But in exchange for this favour, the manager has demanded additional supplies which he will then cream off for himself. A nice little earner. When he is found out, all he can do to regain favour, at least with the suppliers if not with his employer, is to reduce to debts to what they should have been in the first place. This underst5anding of the parable puts it in line with other stories in the gospels of repentance followed by restitution for wrongs committed. E.g. Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-8) Rivington P.S. Can anyone tell me how to insert paragraph breaks?

So, why do you really hate the Roman Catholic Church?
by StAnn inthis is actually a serious question.. when i was a jw, i was taught all kinds of things about how horrible the rcc is.
i believed it.
many years after leaving the wts, i began looking into the rcc for myself and discovered that everything i had been told about the rcc by the wts was a lie.

This reminds me of a chap I met when I was a special pio in Glasgow, many years ago. He was an extreme protestant of a sort very prevalent back then in Glasgow. (I guess they are still prevalent, but not quite so upfront about it now) He said to me: "I don't want your magazines but I certainly agree with you on one thing - you hate the Pope and so do I." How would the Society give up 1914?
by donny induring the 1930's when the society was quietly moving jesus' presence from 1874 to 1914, it only seemed to ruffle a few feathers and most accepted this "brighter light.
" how could the society abandon 1914 and still keep most of its followers?

Actually, during this period Rutherford alienated the overwhelming majority of of Bible Students who had been with the WT during the Russell era. He succeeded because he ousted the original membership and started all over again with new members who knew very little about the earlier teachings. Most of Russell's followers were to be found in the various Bible Student groups which seceded from the WT between 1919 and the mid 1930s. Rivington

How do you get a book published?
by Awakened at Gilead insince leaving jws i have read as many books as i have found written by exjws... i have noticed that some on this board have projects and books that they are working on.... i have an idea for a book that seems to fill a niche in the exjw market... i won't say what it is yet, since i don't want anyone stealing my idea, since it is just hatching... but suffice it to say that i see a need for this book that i would like to write... and i think i could do it... .
i am going to start writing soon, as i have all tehse ideas swimming around in my head... i need to get them onscreen in my computer...any ideas on how to start to get something published?

Anybody can get a book printed, few can get a book printed by Penguin, Simon&Schuster, Warner or Randomhouse. Those are the credits that count. Most agents and publishers don't count self-publishing as being really published. I'm traditionally published with an agent and that's what I recommend. Try to get published-for-real first." As a traditionally published author and member of the Society of Authors, I'd agree that this is the ideal to aim at. But I would disagree strongly with any advice to avoid self-publishing. Do the job properly - editing, proof-reading, production and marketing. Make sure you can keep your selling price down to the level that comparable titles sell for. Then when you have proved that you know what you are doing and can write a book that will sell, you will stand a far better chance of getting your foot in the door of a publisher or agent than you will as a wannabe first-time author. In recent years self-publishing has become a real option but don't give up on the idea of trying to get a contract with a mainstream commercial publisher. For non-fiction you can approach publishers with a proposal even before your book is complete but you need to be very clear about what your book will cover and what your potential market is. Don't despair if no publishers show any interest - take the self-publishing route. Lulu, which was recommended above is good. Another which is definitely worth looking at is www.diggorypress.com. They will typeset for you and design a cover, or you can do all of that yourself and submit print-ready copy. But be warned - proof-reading is far from easy and the slightest error can stick out like a sore thumb, so don't attempt to trim costs by cutting corners. If you are going to self-publish you have to recognise that you will need to do all the marketing and promotion yourself - but even if you get a contract with a commercial publisher you will still have to be prepared to promote your book. With a book about JWs this ought not to be too difficult because your market is well-defined and fairly easily reachable with adverts in the right places. You might also be interested to have a look at www.troubador.co.uk and see their Self Publishing Magazine (I'm one of their reviewers) Hope you find some of this useful. Best of luck with your writing. Rivington
