The "Faithful and Discreet Slave" teaching is, of course a big con. As I understand it, the FDS is supposed to be the remnant of anointed members of the 144,000 still remaining on earth - and the Wise Old Men of Brooklyn act on their behalf. The trouble with this, of course, is that none of the supposedly anointed have any more say in what is taught than do any of the "great crowd." And I guess that if any of them tried to assert their right to dispense spiritual food at the proper time they would suffer the same fate as any other JW trying to put forward their own ideas. They'd be duffed. Far from acting on behalf of the FDS, the Wise Old Men of Brooklyn are a self-perpetuating oligarchy. Rivington

The faithful and discreet slave doctrine is really a big fudge. As I understand it, the FDS is reckoned to be the remnant of the anointed 144,000. The Wise Old Men of Brooklyn claim to act on behalf of the FDS. The trouble with this, however, is that none of the anointed outside of Brooklyn have any more say in what goes on or what is taught in the literature than do any other JWs. Perhaps the Wise Old Men of Brooklyn are the only surviving members of the 144,000 and all the other claimants are simply kidding themselves. Rivington

Sass wrote: "I can't imagine any elder enjoying a disfellowshipping..." Well, maybe not. But I recall the committee that disfellowshipped me - the guy who said the opening prayer included the words, "We thank you, Jehovah, for the privilege of sitting in judgement upon wrongdoers." What a jerk! Rivington

Will Women Eventually Start Being Used As Servants?
by White Dove inas the men in the congregations suffer from burnout and quit helping out as ms and elders, do you think the situation of shrinkage will become so desperate that the wts will be forced to start using women in positions of authority?
they have a huge commodity that they are refusing to use.
that makes no sense at all.

They used to do this years ago in situations where there was a shortage of males. I recall when I was a kid the accounts servant in our cong was the cong servant's wife. The ridiculous thing about this was that when it came to giving the financial report she was never allowed to address the meeting directly but had to speak to the cong servant in answer to his questions. I don't know which title was mentioned on here - there are quite a number that you could profitably read. One which I would recomment highly is "How to read the Bible," by James Krugel. You can find it on Amazon. Rivington

Sex in the new order?
by keyser soze inoften times, at work, my mind will wander.
just the other day, out of the blue, i began to recall a trip my family took down south, to visit my mom's relatives.
i don't remember what instigated it, but my aunt, my dad, and my oldest brother got into a spirited debate about whether or not people would still have sex in the new order.. my dad, after rather awkwardly pointing out how much he enjoyed sex, said he didn't think it would be done away with completely, at least he hoped not.

DJK said: "I always wondered what would happen if a deceased spouse was resurrected and you had remarried after they passed away. Are we talking polygamy?" As I recall, the belief was that the resurrection would not start until after the earth had been fully repopulated by Armageddon survivors - leaving just enough room for resurrected folk. So by the time your first spouse is brought back, marriage and sex is a thing of the past and they've missed out on the fun. I remember my sister's wedding - tacked on to the vows, after, "till death do us part," they had, "or until divine termination of the marital arrangement." Just imagine it: you have all eternity to admire the delights of the most stunningly beautiful girls/blokes and all you can do is think back to how it used to be. So, sex in the new order? Nope, not much. But what about mast... Oops, sorry folks. Rivington

Why did Abel offer "fatty pieces" to Yahweh?
by easyreader1970 infrom my understanding--at least from my instruction from the wbts--humans were not permitted to eat meat by yahweh until after the flood.
if that is true, then why would abel offer tasty, delicious "fatty pieces" to yahweh?
how would abel even know how to cut up an animal for food and know which parts were the best for eating?.
-
Rivington
Easyreader, You are quite right to point out the discrepancy. The Abel story clearly implies a meat-eating culture before the flood whereas God's permission to eat meat in Gen 9 implies that this is when meat-eating began. The simplest answer is that these parts of Genesis have their origins in different traditions. Rather than being written by a single author, Genesis is a compilation from different documentary sources which do not always agree. There are lots of differences of details and style throughout the Pentateuch by which it is possible to roughly identify the various sources. Rivington.
