I echo what many of you have said. I felt horrible about myself, depressed, and socially isolated. As said previously, I was desperately afraid of people knowing I was a witness (which made me an anxious wreck). I remember, especially toward the end, how I would drive somewhat recklessly coming home from meetings on the verge of tears and furious for no particular reason. I just wasn't liking my life. I am a much more content person now.

Did Being A Witness Make You Feel Better About Yourself?
by minimus insome persons need to feel they are validated because they don't have much going for them otherwise.
being a part of jehovah's organization makes them feel special.
being different from other religions makes them feel recognized,.

A question for converts
by Mickey mouse inas i was born in i have no experience of this...
when you were studying do you remember coming up against things you questioned?
did you ask your study conductor and what responses did you get?

"And when it came to issues like the 1914 doctrine, for example, they simply accepted such a teaching because the JW had already revealed established truths from the Bible. Why doubt all the other stuff?"
This struck a chord with me. My mom was/is a convert, and she said almost the exact same thing to me the other day. She is still in, but this is how she explained away things that I was questioning. -

Banned from my sisters wedding
by LunaFing ini'm feeling rejected and hurt because i've just been informed that i am not invited to my little sisters wedding.
first, here's a little background story on my relationship with her: she and i are three years apart.
when we were younger we were very close (i was in the "truth" back then).

This is all so weird. I am getting married soon, so this hits kind of close to home. I'm not having the issues you all have written about, but I have had to consider who I would invite. It is weird to think that some of my old, old friends (but whom I haven't spoken to in years) maybe wouldn't come if I invited them because I am inactive and marrying a "worldly" man. I've just chosen not to invite them, and thus not worry about it. But, it is strange because I KNOW I am a good person, and my fiance is a good person...but we are still viewed as BAD in the eyes of many, many witnesses just because we don't believe the same as they do.
I feel very bad for you, Fern, because I can only imagine how hurt I would feel in your situation. However, I agree with all of the other posters who recommend sending her a nice card. One day, she will probably deeply regret her decision. -

Afraid of the end of the world?
by LearningMore ini am wondering how much of my anxiety about the end of the world is from the wt experience, and how much is just me.
i just watched wall-e, and while a cute movie, it really made me anxious.
scifi in general makes me nervous.

Thanks all for your comments. I like hearing that I am not completely unusual. I am listening to REMs "End of the world as I know it (and I feel fine)." Thanks for that suggestion. Music is really powerful. :) Also, WELCOME fern!

Scifi in general makes me nervous. Do any of you get especially nervous about that sort of thing? I wonder if this is the result of hearing that "the end is near" three times a week (the meetings) for my entire childhood, and seeing artist depictions of the big A. Or, if I am just the worrying type, and scifi isn't my thing....

What does your congregation do socially now?
by truthseeker inif you're still in or hear about jw social activities through the grapevine, what does your congregation do now socially?.
my hall does absolutely - nothing - with the exception of high school graduations.
i read a few posts about jw socialising in the 70s and 80s and honestly, reading about it is completely foreign to me - i grew up in the 80s and never experienced the "good times" of jwdom.. it seems most people do their own thing.

When I was a kid, we had organized "get togethers" probably every 6 months or so. I remember a couple of talent shows organized, and there were occasional large gatherings at a local park. I don't know if people with kids still do those types of things and those without kids or with adult kids don't go or what. I've been out for a decade, but hearing from my mom, there aren't nearly as many gatherings. She always says that it is because people are so much busier now. I don't know about that. I do think it could be perception. She is older now and doesn't have young kids, so perhaps she isn't aware of the get togethers....

I don't remember the covering of the mirrors. When was that? Was it regional? For some reason, I am very surprised at this and I don't remember it!
