Question for believers: How does God set priorities?
by sir82 inwhile waiting for the bus yesterday, i overheard (wasn't trying - but due to his volume, impossible to avoid) a guy on his cell phone talking to someone about his likely imminent dismissal from his employment.. but he then went on to say that he had full confidence that god would take care of him, and he wasn't worried at all about finding new employment.. then i got home, watched the news, and found out that 4 million kenyans are in danger of starving to death because of a year-long drought there.. so i got to thinking - how exactly does god set priorities?.
the guy at the bus stop is not the first christian i've heard express his confidence that god chooses to intervene and help in the lives of individual believers.
he saves them from car wrecks, he helps them find jobs, he lends some sort of invisible emotional support to help them cope with the death of a child, and so on.. on the other hand, millions of people suffer excruciating pain for months or years before finally dying covered in mud with flies crawling on them - no relief from god in sight.. why does god help one middle-aged guy who's never been hungry in his life find a new job in time so that he doesn't miss his $3000 mortgage payment, but not send a little rain to help a land where millions of people are already living in misery and filth?.

Just come right out with it. You'll find people are very supportive. And, you may prevent someone from falling into the grasps of the WTBT$

Where does evolution leave God?
by behemot inthe wall street journal recently commissioned karen armstrong and richard dawkins to independently respond to the question "where does evolution leave god?".
their thoughts are here:.

I have heard Karen Armstrong interviewed on radio a few times. Her notion of god is so vague that it's not worth worshipping. She does have some accurate/interesting things to say about the development of the notion of god and religion as a human concept. I just don't think she follows it all the way through to it's logical conclusion.

IS THERE ANY JUSTIFCATION THAT THE GOD OF THE BIBLE KILLED BABIESÂ….??
by Mr. Majestic in.
assuming the bible true:.
thinking of the story of the way that jehovah, through samuel and saul, dealt with the amalekites; with the discovery of the criminal gene, could this justify the god of the bibles actions against these nations, when he put out the order to not have compassion for them, and the israelites were ordered to put to death, man as well as woman, child as well as suckling...??

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps ignore is the wrong word here. I'll try and narrow it down with an example.
Deuteronomy says that a child that shames his parents should be stoned to death and that his parents should take part in the murder. You take this to be simply the view of the people and not really God's word.
Jesus in the gospels says - love your neighbour as yourself, love your enemy etc. and you think "hmm... this sounds good, this part must be God's word".
Maybe that sounds a little flippant, but I hope you get the idea. I put it to you that it is your own moral feelings, your own personal conception of God (as Sylvia would have a different conception) , which guides you in this choice. In that case, what is special about the bible? What distinguishes it from other books? It is possible to read any story and glean a moral from it - Aesop's fables, The Godfather etc. - that does not speak to its inspiration.

Question for Psacramento:
You appear to be christian from the posts I have read. You state in an early post on this topic that
I do NOT believe that ALL of the OT is the word of God, No.
As I do NOT believe that ALL of the NT is the word of Jesus and God.
My question - What is your criteria for deciding which parts are inspired and which not? It would seem that the parts which you find morally unpalatable are those which you ignore.

All the best with that. It's not easy, but doing what you know and feel to be right is so very empowering.

Is Atheism a Form of Blind Faith?
by passwordprotected inif god is outside of nature and therefore cannot be proved or disproved by science, is atheism a form of blind faith?
after all, it cannot be defended on the basis of pure reason.. steven jay gould said;.
"science simply cannot by its legitimate methods adjudicate the issue of god's possible superintendence of nature.

I credit my dog to have enough intelligence, and have enough belief in my own training abilities, not to hit my dog. If my dog misbehaves, it's my fault.
My child is more intelligent than my dog.
