My story .....no friends after leaving the Cult and lost wife?
by Witness 007 ini realized today that i have no friends at all...it's me and my wife and two dogs and three goldfish, thats it's....i'm not too bothered by it but my wife wants to go back just for the friends.....i have de-programed her out of the "matrix" and she now thinks for herself, but she still feels like she needs a spritual side and friends.
i have people at work but we don't hang out.
i've become a a loner.

What I found, was that my energy and efforts ebbed and flowed. For a few weeks, I would be full of enthusiasm and really follow up on acquaintances - you know, actually calling or meeting up with people, not just saying you will. Then I'd run out of steam. But I noticed that in the slack times, some of the efforts I'd made in the past started paying off. In other words, it might take months to see the reward - but keep making/taking the opportunities and eventually some will pay off.
Other things that worked - our young child gave my wife an excuse to join a toddler group, and she met other mums that way. Not all of them clicked, but she still keeps in touch with some. Night classes - same thing, you might make one friend out of it that'll stick.
Just keep trying.

It does suck to find yourself with no friends (and for me, very poor social skills). Very lonely place at times.

I'd go with Billzfan.
It took a good two years after leaving to make friends for me. While in the borg, I had got into the habit of saying no to any social activities. Once I broke that habit I started taking opportunities to make friends when they come along. I still suffer shyness, but I just grabbed some opportunities. Some people will be assholes, some you'll have nothing in common with. But in time you will find a few friends who you click with.
Be patient. Most people at our stage in life have their social networks made, it takes time to break into them. Are you into music? That got me out and making friends - what hobbies do you have that you can share?

Are you out in the sticks, or are you near a town?

I recently had a bottle of Alba beer, brewed in Scotland. It's flavoured with Scot's Pine and Spruce. It's like Christmas in your mouth. There are some stunning Scottish ales. Sampled a lot of them on a visit a couple of weeks ago.

To Christmas or Not to Christmas (inspired by Watersprout's DA thread)
by Mad Sweeney inmy wife and kid want to do christmas but i don't.
i am not against it but i have no reason to celebrate the holiday.
i'll get the kid some presents, and maybe my wife, but is that alone really "celebrating christmas?

We're only out about 2-3 years. But I love Christmas. I don't believe in Jesus, but I still enjoy the celebrations. The pagan stuff actually makes it better. I feel a huge draw to the Winter Solstice. Something inside me feels the flow of time with the long shadows. I also think that the tree and the lights brighten a dark time of year.
I won't do Santa. We put the presents under the tree a week or two before Christmas. I'm crap at delayed gratification but it's alot of fun. We don't buy expensive presents. It's just a nice time when we're all off work and we can be together as a family.
It's wierd when you are a born-in and you have no family tradition of celebrating the holidays, but we can make our own traditions. We spent our first Christmas with my sister and we saw some lovely things which we've adopted. It's one of the nice things about not being tied to a belief system that you can decide yourself what you want to include.

Was any of you leading a bible study when discovered the truth about the "truth"?
by Desilusionnee ini ask because i'm confronted to that and i really don't know what to do.
i always pointed out that the bible and not the book we are studying together is god's word, but now i really don't know any farther.. the 2nd problem is that we don't only study the bible she is now a friend of mine, our children are of the same age?
were some of you in the same situation?

I was, and I was quite honest with the study about why I was leaving. However, the indoctrination had been too deep already and so the study is still attending meetings two years later.
I did visit most of my return visits and told them "the truth". I am still friends with some of them.
You do need to be honest, but be cautious enough so you can cover your tracks. Drop in a few of your concerns, and tell them to research it for themselves.
