As an elder I have a file on my computer containing the name, address, cell and home telephone number of every publisher associated with the congregation of which I am a part. It is my understanding that this information is also held at the Branch and, in turn, at Brooklyn. The reasoning behind the need to have such information on all of the publishers is that, in the event of a disaster, be it through 'nature' or design, the elders will be able to contact the 'flock'. But the flaw inherent in that logic has been made clear in Burma and China. A disaster of any scale usually wipes out electricity supplies and telephone lines. Therefore, a file, electronic or paper, detailing the addresses and telephone numbers of the 'flock' is essentially useless. Anyone every thought about this before?

Being told what to say in Convention interviews
by passwordprotected inhas anyone else heard tell of interviewees in convention parts being told what to say?
the way i've heard it is you're contacted to be interviewed in a convention talk because you've had a great experience in some form or other and they need you to boast about it.
so, you meet with the brother handling the assignment and you go through your experience with him (boast about it).

I also heard an experience where a sister said that she relied on Jah in prayer. An example she gave was when she was late for a doctor's appointment and prayed the bus would hurry up. At that moment the bus came around the corner. The speaker's reply to this piece of nonsense? "That's fantastic." So, we're to believe that Jah moves buses through time and space to meet the needs of a sickly sister going to the docs? And I thought Lost was far-fetched......

I heard two interviews at a DC where the bros in question had both, while still JWs, gone to college, got good educations, held down jobs where their position was one of power, and they were well paid for it. Both bros were now elders and held prominent roles, both in the congregations and in other areas of the org. They stated that getting the education helped them serve Jah better. Hmm...I wonder if perhaps the bro interviewing them forgot about the official line. Bet we don't hear from him again.

JW's clearly going 'beyond the things written' - examples
by jambon1 inthe one that got me recently is the matter of elders being removed if they encourage college education in the cong.
where in the scriptures?
any others that spring to mind?

All the recent stuff about how, after the Great Trib and into the 1000 years, our lives will be ALL about the hard work of burying the dead, cleaning up the earth, building houses for the resurrected ones, teaching said resurrected ones the truth. G. Losch said in his recent Hawaiian discourse that, while we may think it'll be a long vacation, that certainly won't be the case. It's going to be very hard work. (Meanwhile the anointed are in heaven directing us. 2nd class citizens....) In all seriousness I found those discussions very, very depressing. (One publisher stated that it makes you wonder if it's all worthwhile...) And also none of it is in scripture. However, God is stretching out his hand and satisfying the desires of every. Living. Thing.

Has anyone else heard tell of interviewees in Convention parts being told what to say? So, you meet with the brother handling the assignment and you go through your experience with him (boast about it). And he says, 'um, ok, that's great, I can really see how you were blessed in that instance. But I wonder if you could maybe add [insert personal opinion/downright lie so that it fits in better with the outline kindly provided by the FDS legal dept]?' I'm guessing refusal to play around with the truth would mean they'd replace you and you'd miss the chance to boast in front of your peers at the DC. So, you go ahead, you gulp down your conscience and you embellish your experience so that it fits in better with the outline and you get a less lethargic round of applause afterwards. Also, has anyone else sat with jaw agape at the nonsense a bro or sis you happen to know is spouting during one of these interviews? Have you turned to the bro or sis behind you and gasped, 'that's now how it happened!'? It's amazing the mediocrity that's celebrated year after year at the DC.

Why I will NEVER be an elder again
by stillajwexelder inso the po confirmed what many on this board already know.
at latest round of co to elders meeting, the co quoted from the society outline.
any elder or ms who encourages college for his kids or others or who allows his children to go to college will no longer qualify.. he then asked if i was going to take the cos encouragement and reach out again to be an elder and get my hours on the ministry up.. i replied "i will never be an elder again - i strongly approve of further education and college and have been through college myself.

I should add that the the theme was 'Keep Holding the Pattern of Healthful Words'. The section on education explained that Jesus apostles gave up promising careers and we should consider our motives and goals before embarking, or encouraging our kids to embark, on further education. All in all it was fairly balanced, but at the end of the day it really is no ones' business and some COs/BoEs will take from it whatever suits their agenda.

I can confirm this was part of the outline. The context was a little more precise, however. In the context the elder and his wife were PROMOTING college education, they were talking about how their child getting a good eduction will mean FINANCIAL SECURITY FOR THEM, and the kid was attending a college AWAY from home. This elder's qualifications would be questioned. The context also featured an example of a child who went to a local college (part-time), the kid still aux-pioneered when they could, was used in the cong., and was planning to reg-pioneer after graduating. In this example the elder's qualifications would be safe. Further to this, and to reply to some comments about the hemorrhaging of elders due to being judged by the actions of their adult children, a couple of years ago the CO visit outline contained scenarios where an elder whose adult daughter was DFd, had fallen pregnant and had moved back into the family home. His qualifications would be looked at. I personally know of more than a few elders who have stood down because they have foreseen the calamity ahead of them. The rules make it virtually impossible for an elder to remain qualified if their kids strays more than a little. And all of this because it might 'stumble' some of the flock. Ah, the stumble excuse.
