@reniaa - immorality is specifically mentioned in the Bible. Xmas, politics, gambling and the other sundry habits/practices the WTS rules on often aren't.
Christians aren't under rules or laws like the Jews.
Putting screwing around on the same level as celebrating your kid's birthday is, once again, classic WTS logic.
Isn't reasoning with JWs tiring?

Is it the JW's or the God of the bible you no longer believe?
by reniaa ini have a question for the ex-jw's on this forum after months of reading the forum..... many say how good it is to be free of the oppressiveness of the jw's that they can now enjoy the freedom to... have sex, celebrate christmas, gamble, embrace politics etc.
there are still biblical scriptures and principles in place that if you still followed the bible would mean you avoid these things and yet these are now embraced as one of the perks of no longer being a jw so in my confusion i ask.... if these are what you want, isn't it more correct to say you no longer follow the bible as apposed to just the jw's?.

I agree that this post has all of the WTS spin you'd expect from someone who is cognitively dissonant.
Leaving the WTS does not always equate to wanting the so-called perks. I want the freedom, but I'm prepared to exercise my freedom within the moral limits I believe are present in the Bible, the Gospels in particular.
I choose not to have my freedom impinged on by a publishing corporation who seem to have an almost fetish for Jewish law.
Birthdays, Xmas, gambling; firm Biblical principles - not Jewish laws - making these activities something incongruent with Christian living should be shown before there's any perceived sneering at those who get involved with them.
Personally, I left the WTS because Russell died believing his prophecy re. 1914 was accurate, he died believing Christ returned invisibly in 1874 and that the 'last days' began in 1799. I left the WTS because Rutherford went around the world prophesying that millions living in 1920 would never die. I left the WTS because they deny the new covenant to all but around 9000 of it's members.
I still believe the Bible, though. -

@scotsman - re. DAing, I don't want to have the name Jehovah associated with me in any way. Plus, with a big extended family, some of whom are hardcore, we want to make a stand for what we believe in, we want our kids to know where they stand too, etc etc.
Re Alpha being similar to JWs, I suppose the fact that the people running it are committed in their beliefs, then yes, there are similarities. However, that's pretty much where the similarities end. I mean, last night people were voicing opinions that were totally different from everyone else and they didn't get taken into another room by two guys in suits and given 'counsel'... -

@besty - leaving a mind control religious cult and becoming a Christian, while not that common, isn't any different from leaving a mind control religious cult and becoming an atheist. It's just exchanging the enforced beliefs (which I never really bought into as a JW) of a cult for a completely different set of beliefs that, rather than enforced, are chosen.
I personally like having faith in God, it makes me feel nice. -

There's a study article coming in a few weeks all about caring for elderly parents. Doesn't mention sisters. As someone above says, they're legalistic.

Great stuff as usual Blondie.
For those who missed it, here's my rantings on this article, an article, IMO, that is particularly offensive.
