Seriously, I do think there are beings made of energy or whatever that keep a low profile for whatever reasons...and they vary in quality.

I'd stay clear of Ouija boards--I think somehow if you put a call out, or open up, anything can access you, and anything might be low class. I had bad experiences in my teen years after a Ouija board, which I threw away. The manifestations could have been take as evidence of psychosis, but I has no other symptoms and they went away--voices, seeing shadowy figures, touches, the sleep paralysis.

I have had none of those experiences since a couple years after the Ouija board--and they started when I started using the thing--and it's been decades. I was like--no and no, get away, I don't want to be bothered, leave me the frick alone...and after a while it all stopped.

God's Conversation with Job

so i'm still stuck on the jw email spam train, and my mom sends me this powerpoint with a horrible, horrible presentation with job 38 set to a bunch of pictures of the universe and whatnot.

you know the passage, it's all "where were you when i created the earth, you insignificant gnat".

and the point, i guess, is to show that god is all powerful and awesome.

Cultural Mormons

over the past few days i have been doing some research on the mormon church.

i'm thinking hard about becoming a member.

My ex was an LDS (Mormon). They indeed have much support for their members. There are all sorts of things for young people, women's social groups, men's groups, constant church sponsored social activity. What impressed me most is that they really do help the needy in their congregations unlike the witnesses. A person can get money regularly to help with their bills when they need it--they have their own welfare roll. Also if somebody needs physical help if they are sick or elderly, it's there in abundance. I saw many "widows and orphans" going without help in the Society--always passed over in favor of knocking on doors.

They actually moved me out and helped me financially when I left my unbelieving abusive MORMON husband even though I was the unbeliever! Can you imagine the witnesses doing the same? As far as showing love the Watchtower falls unbelievably short of the LDS.

How do you get a book published?

since leaving jws i have read as many books as i have found written by exjws... i have noticed that some on this board have projects and books that they are working on.... i have an idea for a book that seems to fill a niche in the exjw market... i won't say what it is yet, since i don't want anyone stealing my idea, since it is just hatching... but suffice it to say that i see a need for this book that i would like to write... and i think i could do it... .

i am going to start writing soon, as i have all tehse ideas swimming around in my head... i need to get them onscreen in my computer...any ideas on how to start to get something published?

I agree with the previous advice on nonfiction--You need a proposal and sample chapter. What the agent/editor will look at closely is the marketing section. What else is out there, how did it sell and how do you realistically plan to market this book?

For fiction, you have to write the book first. An agent will get you far more attention with editors with nonfiction or fiction. Most publishers refuse to look at nonagented stuff unless it's straight genre (such as category romance).

Self-publishing...sigh. I don't think the self-published have paid their full dues and there's LOTS of self-published crap out there. Anybody can get a book printed, few can get a book printed by Penguin, Simon&Schuster, Warner or Randomhouse. Those are the credits that count. Most agents and publishers don't count self-publishing as being really published. Money should flow one way, towards you. After getting 24 books published, I haven't spent one penny.

I'm traditionally published with an agent and that's what I recommend. Try to get published-for-real first. Do your research! If you're loathe to do your research, forget on publishing in nonfiction. The proposal itself will take exhaustive marketing research.

The question you asked is answered in spades in any library and on the Internet. Don't ask authors elementary questions, to read your stuff or for them to intro to their agent. If we don't know you it opens us up to legal hassles.

This is a clear example of racism in action.

ColdRedRain thinks examples of a few black thuggish types has anything to do with a dialogue on black and white racism. It's as if I brought up meth heads in their run down trailer parks--how loud they were and how the police came out every weekend--applied it to The White Problem and How White People Are.

I'd be nothing but a racist, right? A few blacks who identify with a certain (underclass or hip-hop) subculture aren't all blacks, even most blacks and don't have a d@mned thing to do with how black people are, just as a few white meth heads, skin heads, or whatever, have little to do with all white people and how white people are.

Elder calling around

i'm a new member as i've not completely left the org yet and being a "good lil jw" would never have looked at a site like this previously!

there is one elder in the cong who calls around every so often to "chat" as i only stopped attending meeting a couple of months ago.

i've spoken to him about certain subjects - eg the un thing and the misuse of quotes - but he has no useful answers for me.

I have an elder who calls me...just to talk. I'm not much of a phone talker. I'm pleasant, but get off the phone quickly. He asks how I am, but always talks about inconsequential stuff. I keep conversation superficial and don't tell him my doubts or inner feelings, 'cause I know it wouldn't be wise in more ways than one.

As a single sister, I kinda get that interest vibe from him. If they call or come around by themselves, particularly if you're a single sister like I am, I think it's of their own initiative and not any instruction from the BoE. I'm not sure, but you should consider that and handle him accordingly.

He rushes over at meetings to speak to me and his wife looks at me as if she wants to strangle me. Sheesh. Keep your man on a tighter leash, lady.

My son and I had a talk after back from JW dad's

well some of you know that i gave my son over (custody) to his jw dad after a vicious 7 year long custody battle.

it broke my heart but i ran out of ways to keep fighting and it was tearing our family apart.

anyway for the last 1& 1/2 years he's lived with his dad and spent all holidays and summer break w/me.

It sounds like you're doing a wonderful job with your son in a difficult situation. I commend you. My ex was abusive too. I said I wanted sole custody in return for leaving him all the material goods (we started a successful business together) and not even any child support other than what he wants to send. This was too good a deal for him to turn down, thank God, and he backed off the custody battle. I would hate to have to endure what you're going through.

Three put of ten admitted it? Wow. I'd put the real frequency of bias against blacks far higher--probably eight out of ten, even nine out of ten, from the point of view of an actual black person. Most won't admit it even to themselves even as they act their racism out. Pointing their actions out to them won't make them admit it either--it'll just make them mad. This doesn't mean KKK racism--most people will see you as a person once they get to know you. But most also have that foundation of antipathy or negative expectations about black people as a whole. When they get to know you as a person, you're still the exception, the good black person vs one of those other ones. This is still racism, but we get used to it. Most blacks in the US are experts in dealing with racist whites if they participate in mainstream society.

Blacks aren't allowed to speak about race in this society unless done extremely carefully. Racist whites don't want to hear it and telling them how you perceive race as a black person will turn them against you faster than anything. If Obama is forced to speak about race as he was over the Wright situation, it will be the end for him. Racist whites will turn against him en masse. He HAS to be an exception in the eyes of the bulk of racist whites to win, the Good Negro.

I was proud of how carefully he presented the race speech he was forced to make, so as to piss off the racist whites as little as possible. He has to tread on eggshells from now on--any mention of race will turn the bulk of racist whites in this country completely against him--no matter how true or reasonable what he says. It's like speaking against the Watchtower to a JW :-)
