willyloman said: "On a fascinating thread, full of gems, this says a lot:
It is amazing the young crowd that were in that area at the time that are no longer JW's. I would say 95%, and even those still in are not "really in". "
That 95% is more specifically for the Rolla/St.James JW's. I would venture a guess that quite a large number of the 21 and under crowd (as of '75) in all of Central MO are no longer JW's. I can say with some certainty that the JeffCity and Columbia group are mostly out. I personally attended/participated in over 20 weddings of my friends in 1974. My pioneer partner attended even more than I. Seems there was this fear that maybe they would become like the angels after Armageddon.... you know.... NO SEX.
The 1974-1975 debacle was a pretty transparent blunder to most young JW's. Especially as some of them discovered that marriage to the wrong person was not paradise. It was a standing joke between my partner and I that when our newly coupled friends tried to get us hitched up it was because they wanted us to be as miserable as they were.
If only there was a moratorium on DF'ing for premarital sex there might be some more active JW's from those areas. I would have voted for it!!! After all, nearly the whole Sedalia MO young crowd were DF'd one year for acting on their sexual impulses out of sequence with other required ceremonies. This also happened bigtime in Rolla and several other congos in midMO.
After all, if they were "temporarily" wrong about '75, why could they have wrong about the definition of "fornication"?

TERRY,
For me I think the last name will be a necessary clue on my part. Do you have a brother also lurking around in here? Greg and his wife and kids are fine and live close by in Long Island. Becky lives in Copenhagen with her husband and doing well. I will let Greg know that you showed up in the forums. He also has Becky's email.

exJW's are a particularly interesting group that took a lot of drugs and are still trying to figure out what part of their drug experience was real, and whether they should still be concerned about it.
exJW's who are ex-Bethelites are quite different... wouldn't you say .... Randy? :-)

Greg writes:
"Ah, yes...from the old "Oklahoma" song "Farmer and the Cowhand Should Be Friends"
Instead of parodying the "Construction and Home Crew Should Be Friends", they could have done one like this: (the original is on the right and mine is on the left, for those unfamiliar with the musical.)"
I always thought you could have worked it out with the Writing Dept.... or with Glass and some new KS. ... :) -

I still remain in contact with Carl and will ask him for names. Carl put together the group, knowing quite a few good musicians besides being an excellent horn player himself. His wife, then fiance, was a concert violinist with the Allentown Philharmonic. She often came to play for the recordings at Bethel.
About bro. no tie... he was an interesting character. Besides the really old farts, he was the only younger Bethelite I knew that lived in a single-man room.
That was a borrowed gold LesPaul, and he was quite proud of it. With some of the GB sitting front row center he had no qualms cranking it up, both in volume and some non-conservative physical activity. They let him know during a rehearsal, although I think he "forgot" once the actual show proceeded. There are times when your peers are more important. I blame the demon guitar... :-) -

Tom says: "Sorry, Warren, but the guy you think is Leo Guerrero is actually Dagoberto Garcia. All these guys were Pressroom. No electricians here!"
Hah!... twins. :-) 30 years requires a lot of us sometimes. -

cathy says: "In NYC, where the unions rule with an iron fist, this isn't uncommon if a job needs to be done quickly and with a minimum of personnel. If the union found out, though, there could be broken bones ..."
You're quite mistaken, in NYC large corporations and big money run this city with the iron fist, ...always have... always will... Even so, the unions and their skilled workers exist here through a lot of hard work and battles. Union projects are far more productive and safer, than non-union jobs, besides being inspected properly by licensed authorities.
I do not understand the negative views of unions... which essentially are workers who collectively negotiate and vote for a living wage.... The audacity of democracy.
Imagine.... the WTS paying a fair wage, providing adequate healthcare/insurance, or any other type of compensation if you get old, you know the things unions try to get for workers.
You might consider these forums of exJW's as a collective group a union with a repressive former boss. I wonder who's complaining about unions now?
In fact, there were some negotiations that went on between the trade unions here and the WTS when the 25 CH construction was being done. I got to learn a little more firsthand when I became a member of the IBEW construction division in 1983, and one of the union officials that signed me up learned about my being a JW at WT during the past 4 years. He told me about some of the negotiations and concessions made on labor for that construction project. I also got some more questions about WT operations including the factory. -

Room 215 says: "Here are some of my recollections of Bethel, circa 1966-67: ... But I must say that it's rare for anyone to go through the Bethel experience and come out with his/her idealism intact."
I think that sums it up pretty well. I would say that nobody goes through Bethel with their initial idealism intact. Most of us never could have anticipated sharing absolutely every part of our daily life with 2000 others literally shoulder to shoulder. You knew the newboys right away as they spoke of righteousness and smiled a lot.
Only George Ganges and Karl Klein were able to maintain idealism for all their years of service... and both were totally retarded.
