Tom says: Never heard of either one of them. That must of been for new boys, Warren. I was already a "heavy" when you got there. :-) Maybe someone else remembers.
Yes, you were a Bethel heavy when I got there. We could feel your thunderous steps all the way to the Building 4 electrical office.... then I learned it was just the paper rolls getting dropped. :-)

For the newboy physical Doc Dixon would open the curtain on the west side and let the light in, and then ask you to Moon Manhattan, so he could finish the anal examination.
The "scourge" was the severe Jock Rash that you got from newly washed underwear. My roommates John Sullivan and Peter ?, who worked in laundry, called it the Bethel scourge. I did not bring it up as regular conversation, but I thought that it part of normal events for Bethelites.
The first time I saw Doc Dixon with the rash, that covered about a good portion of my inner leg and testicle area, I was embarrassed due to what they might think.. out of sight of others. He took a 10-second look and told me it was jock itch/rash and came from the laundry. He gave me a tube of medicated ointment, which cleared it up pretty quickly. At a later date the rash showed up again, but this time I simply told the nurse at the front I had jock rash and she handed me a tube of the ointment and I was on my way. It was the last time the problem showed itself.
I never had this before Bethel, and never since my last breakout while there.

Taking a walk down memory lane at Bethel...,
Do you remember, soon after arriving at Bethel, someone asking you to "moon Manhattan"?
Did you ever have to deal with the Bethel "scourge"? I did, and on 2 occasions. The second time didn't scare the hell out of me like the first.

Tom, You've haven't changed much since those early pictures I see. I also played with another small group that included Billy Black (of the Black family on the Promenade), Chris ?, myself, and Valerie ? (she was a cripple in a wheelchair). Valerie loved Joni Mitchell and did a great job on her music. The rest of our presentation was Pure Praire Leauge, Poco, NGDG, and Eagles. We played mostly for small JW gatherings locally. it all fell apart after Billy Black was df'd. Warren

A jaded reference to life as a JW, perhaps?
Jim Petrie was a tall, smart, good looking guy, with a large contigent of groupie sisters that imagined they would be the one I suppose. It was kind of fitting that he had his own cry in your beer "love" song. A song, which in my estimation as a musician, was cleverly done. He was the whole package as a yet single Bethelite. -

Jim Petrie played and sang in a small group that was always a hit at local parties.
Remember his signature song that had the line "You Stepped On My Aorta And You Smashed That Sucker Flat!". -

Hi Tom,
Good to see you're still in the neighborhood. Last time we met was about 10 years ago at Greg's in Long Island.
The Wed night sauna ritual was a regular event for a long time, but I don't read much of anything about it by ex-Bethelites. I also went once, but never got inside because of the packed house, inside and out. I waited for a little while and never tried again. I did get to enjoy the sauna at better hours and would sleep like a baby afterwards.
Thanks for the info and correction about Nestor and Toni.
I believe Chris and Norma are still in Queens or LI. I think Greg stays in touch.
I spoke to your good friend Carl Johnson just a couple days ago. I say that because he has never failed to bring up your name if we discuss Bethel or JW's.
Carl and I played in a Bethel band together, and even performed the music for the Family Night production when they did "Oklahoma" as a template for the "Construction and Home Crew Must Be Friends" and other parodies of the stage play. It was quite fun. I have a picture of us to the side of the stage. I will have to dig it out and post a copy.
Another interesting story can be told about this event which I will save for later. It involves wild music, and a flipped story about the history of the Squibb buildings.
Cheers,

"Bible Study" is a JW term that applies to A PERSON who is not a JW who is studying a book. "Book Study" is the only truly sanctioned JW activity.
Dragged by blue mules might have been worthwhile. Those sell for a premium here in NYC and bought a lot of six-packs for some thirsty Bethelites...

A few questions were asked which I can address here. There were plenty of overseers to manage the whereabouts of their workers. There were factory departments that some workers would obviously be out of place, like an inked-up, sleeveless, stud from the pressroom wandering the graphics department. You generally needed permission to leave your work area, and there was little to no time to even think and breathe past the productivity push on a machine. Yes, I am Greg's brother. He started at Bethel in 75 or 76 I believe, and left by 80, the year he married. Steve Lupo was my roommate for most of my stay at Bethel. We were in a 4-man room in the Towers. We had no problems missing the worst meal of the day, supper. Steve would always bring food to the room in the evenings.... the good food. He had a fixation on Pink Floyd and the new Wall album. Since I played guitar (also played in a great family night production) I knew all the songs. To this day I don't I would miss a note after nearly a 2 year daily brainwashing of the same music. Steve and I suffered the most when they clamped down on "satanic music". I think he got his "bad" albums back home. I wasn't so lucky. I hid my "blacklisted" (some specifically ID'd... like Led Zeppelin) under some things in my closet. They were fine there for a while until I got a letter in my room that stated that I still had music that was not approved. You see, all music albums were to be in the open, for whoever, to decide which ones should go. Then I knew there was no privacy in the Bethel rooms. Between housekeepers, spies, and service department police, the "while you were out" crews were plenty busy rummaging. Cheers, Warren
