Witnessgirl.
Glad to get the juices flowing--something the WTS would NOT do.
You said, "If he wasn't, then the quote seems a little silly, at least as it is used by the Society.
Therein lies a point. The Society only uses that tidbit of a quote while ignoring that Paul was referencing OT Scripture frequently. The Society throws that out there to squash any peepings of dissent by guilt tripping others into believing that if you question Paul's words (and the Orgs strict application of it), then you are questioning God. This is why I can't stress to Bible readers/believers enough to READ IT FOR YOURSELVES--and not just a piece here and a piece there. Context, folks, context.
On another point, I clearly understand a need for structure and order. But how many Christians are really aware that their faith is more Paul-like than Christ-like? What even prompted me to raise this question to begin with was something I heard on TV: if Paul had any idea how people would theologize his letters, he would have been more careful when he wrote them (a paraphrase from a man featured in "Banned from the Bible" on the History Channel).
Oh, witnessgirl, in reference to your mentioning 3 Corinthians: Why kind of morons was Paul dealing with over in Corinth that they couldn't seem to get their act together? Three letters? Dayuuuummmmm!!!

Do Paul's Letters Really Count?
by almostbitten inif there is anyone here with some heavy bible knowledge, i would like to throw this nugget up in the air.
in 2 timothy 3:16, paul reminds us that "all scripture is inspired of god and beneficial for teaching...." nwt (because that was the version that was sitting nearby).
my question is: did paul consider the personal letters he wrote to the various churches and to timothy, titus, and philemon as scripture?

Trading Hierarchies
by almostbitten inthis is closely related to a topic that's already been presented here by someone else, but i felt that i had to post this because i wanted a more detailed answer to a question i raised on the post: .
when a person who is jw converts to the rcc, or vice versa, isn't this essentially trading hierarchies?
if so, does this have to do with that person's true belief or is it ingrained into them that they have to have their beliefs or god's word filtered down to them through a chain of command?

yknot, I may study with the Mormons next just to see what bag they are coming out of
Satanus, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here: SHOULD a [catholic] do almost anything he/she wants and still remain a member? -

Thanks Baba and Yknot. I was beginning to think this point was lost on most people. LOL at a "Pope with several heads." Sounds like the beast in Revelations, huh?

Clothing in the New Order
by donny inthe society teaches that once the new order is up and running, we will achieve perfection as adam and eve once were.
if thats the case, why do they portray folks in the new order as fully clothed?
i thought clothing was the result of sin, so once sin is eliminated, should not clothing be also?

Blondie,
If you had asked that question to my JW friend, she would tell you straight-faced that "the other scrolls have yet to be opened." Therefore, no one could give you a straight answer because of the "scroll." -

WT Study vs Public editions(the new bait & switch?)
by kzjw ini grabbed one of the public editions of the wt from the wife's car yesterday.
o noticed there was no mention of the fds, god's org or any of the hardline stances found in the study editions.
no verses frorm matt 24, proverbs 4 or any of the other standard verses found inthe kool-aid versions, but a host of others concerning the holy spirit.... so how is the wtbs still so successful at the age old bait & switch?.

LOL @ daniel p.
I'm sure the makers of Kool-Aid appreciate someone removing the stigma of Jim Jones and placing the proper product endorsement where it belongs! Besides, Flavor Aid is cheaper! -

When a person who is JW converts to the RCC, or vice versa, isn't this essentially trading hierarchies?
If so, does this have to do with that person's true belief or is it ingrained into them that they have to have their beliefs or God's Word filtered down to them through a chain of command? Think about it. How does the GB of the WTS differ all that much from the Pope of the RCC? Wouldn't both be perceived as the FDS, although RCs don't really use that terminology? -

NMG,
Thank you for weighing in. This concerns me because many churches and JWs especially, put a LOT of weight on Paul's writings, probably more than they do the teachings and examples of Christ.
This is another line of thought, but it just seems to me that Paul, though converted, never seemed to be able to separate himself from his legalistic background and training as a Pharisee. Though he offers counsel for an organized church, do we give more weight to the rules and regulations he puts forth versus the spirit of Jesus' teachings? -

kzjw,
I'm a non-Witness who was studying at one time, but soon decided "no thanks," but not before the lady I studied with started giving me the "insiders" edition of the WT (she was THAT sure I would become a witness). I was like WTF? I had NO idea that the WTS was handing out two versions of the WT. Why do they do that?
I can't really answer your question as to what's going on. I will say that this should raise some eyebrows for some people. I notice the "insider" edition is a lot more hardcore, and what little I did read just turned me further away from that organization. -

My question is: Did Paul consider the personal letters he wrote to the various churches and to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon as SCRIPTURE? What about Paul, James and John?
For you Bible readers, if you notice, Paul always quotes the OT/Hebrew/Aramaic Scriptures. It is a well known fact that the OT was written down and also referred to orally (even Jesus referred to them), but does that mean that Paul was calling "Scripture" anything he or his contemporaries wrote? I realize they were giving counsel to others in the newly emerging church, but does counsel necessarily equate with scripture? After all, the NT/Greek Texts were compiled by the so-called "church fathers" at a later date, with some writings being accepted and others flat out rejected. -

So, why do you really hate the Roman Catholic Church?
by StAnn inthis is actually a serious question.. when i was a jw, i was taught all kinds of things about how horrible the rcc is.
i believed it.
many years after leaving the wts, i began looking into the rcc for myself and discovered that everything i had been told about the rcc by the wts was a lie.

Oops! Double post. Was trying to edit what was left out "...the name Jehovah was left out of her Bible, so she took this as some sort of RCC cover up. I have also known ex-JWs who end up becoming RC. What I don't understand is this:..."
Then the rest of my comment kicks in. Sorry.
