It has always bothered my how Witnesses are discouraged from doing volunteer work because "preaching to them about the truth is the best thing we can do!" Ok, yeah, whatever. It's true that the Bible talks about preaching as being important for Christians, but that's FAR from being the only thing that Christians are encouraged to do for their fellow humans. Doesn't the Bible say that "the form of worship that is clean and undefiled" is to "look after orphans and widows in their tribulation"? Yes it does! I always get the same old answer when I mention volunteering: "they can't solve the world's problems, only Jehovah can." Ok, so here's my beef with that. NOBODY is talking about solving the problems of the entire world; I'm just talking about doing what is within my power to help those that I can. It's like saying to someone with the flu "these pills won't cure the flu, they'll just ease the symptoms, so it's not worth taking them." That's freakin' ridiculous!! The flu will get cured in it's own time, but nobody would rightly object to getting a bit of relief while you're waiting for it to happen!! Am I right?! It's just so frustrating. There was a sign in a shop near my house that was asking for clothes to be donated to a shelter for victims of domestic abuse. I went home and told my husband that I wanted to get some clothes together, and he got this look on his face as if I'd told him I wanted to start smoking crack. He was shocked and against it!! Then it was that whole crap about "not solving the world's problems." ANYWAY, that having been said, I really want to look up volunteer opportunities in my local area. Any ideas, thoughts, etc etc?

I completely agree!! My husband and I married when I was 18 and he was 21. He's a great guy and we've made it work, but most of our success has come more recently as I've stopped attending meetings and finally starting acting like a normal person - not a Witness robot!! Good luck!!

So anyway, all previous attempts to speak with my husband about my doubts have ended up in a HUGE fight, with him asserting that somehow I'm not in my right mind. But last week, I delicately brought it up again, and surprisingly his reaction wasn't all that bad. He actually listened!! Could there be hope??? -

About time to "Batten Down the Hatches"
by AK - Jeff inmy wife has been out of work now for over a year.
she is tail-ending her unemployment very soon.. our county is experiencing close to the worse rates of unemployment in the country right now [ elkart, indiana - obama's economic poster child ] is just 50 miles away.
our county has a rate nearly equal to theirs.

I know this sounds goofy, but maybe she can start selling Avon or something. Just trying to help. I'm looking for work also. Thank goodness my husband has a pretty good paying job, but still, it's tough!!! Good luck!!

I know exactly the kind of self-righteous Witnesses you are talking about. This sounds like a typical visit with my parents!! Good luck to you!!

I haven't posted in a while, so I'm glad to be back. My husband and I got into another fruitless discussion last night. It actually turned out to be more of a fight than a discussion. I tried to CALMLY bring up some of my concerns about Witnesses (failed predictions, lack of true love when you need it most) and it's like he put up a wall. He got so angry with me and told me the programmed Witness crap about "this is the only true religion; no other religion preaches!" I told him that he wouldn't know because JWs are the only religion we've ever been in, and the only information we receive is what the GB wants us to hear. It got pretty ugly. I want to leave the Witnesses, because I no longer believe that they are the only true religion, but as you can tell, this is not going well at all. I risk losing my husband to gain my freedom. It just isn't fair!!
