how many here meditate?
what is your program of meditation like?
with a group or by yourself?
James,
I take it you have probably read Krishnamurti's work. I really like his approach to mindfulness...he keeps pointing out that it is not something you 'do'.
By the way, I have a friend who was involved in what I now believe to be a yoga/meditation cult. She told me that she had lingering feelings of love for an older man who was 'more than a teacher' to her. The level of dependency as she described it was frightening.
I have heard (on the radio) of one particular man who abused women who came for guidance and enlightenment in a yoga community. Women who have suffered sexual violence are particularly vulnerable to this type of manipulation. The women were told by the teacher or guru to 'be celibate', or conserve their sexual energy, by refraining from any type of sexual activity. (This reminded me much of what my friend told me about her celibacy...even masturbation is avoided.) As seems obvious, the women developed powerful feelings of sexual dependency for the teacher. Instead of being monogamously married, as he told them, he was having multiple affairs with the women.
My girlfriend told me several months ago she had 'slept with someone else' two months into our relationship. Well, under extreme duress, I told her about the time when I got a massage at a seemingly reputable business which turned out to be less of a massage (which is what I wanted) and more of something else (use your imagination).
This incident I divulged happened long after her incident, by the way. I had been saying for a long time that I was uncomfortable in a sexually committed relationship. Sometimes she supported my ideas and sometimes she rejected them.
Anyhow, I let it happen because I thought I could tell her and not be ashamed of how I had let that woman touch me. It was nice, although no, I was not attracted to her.
When I finally told her, I regretted very much telling...and I still do.
As it turns out, when she 'slept with someone else' towards the beginning of our relationship, it was not consensual sex. She did not even kiss him.
It was rape.
My girlfriend was physically and emotionally injured. She is slowly recovering from that insulting trauma.
So while neither of us feel like we 'cheated' on the other, the pain from those two incidents is extreme. I feel so guilty about having 'gone outside the relationship', but considering how weakened she was by the rape, and considering I was ignorant of why she had been weakened, how could I help feeling like something was lacking?
What I think is that sexual freedom is a very good thing. I think that in a very strong relationship sexual intimacy can be explored openly.
The problem is that no one, whether or not they want commitment, has good motives.
Be careful about whom you trust, including yourself.
the movie "yours mine and ours" .
is also in paper back.
"who gets the drumstick" .
Funny plmkrzy,
I was just thinking how odd it is that I have NOT had a dream about this db yet. Ordinarily when I fall asleep, all I see is images of whatever I had been doing that day.
For example, after paintball a coupla weekends ago, I could barely fall asleep because I kept imagining being shot at.
I sure spend lots of my time in here. Perhaps the experience here is not interactive enough for me. Or perhaps I do dream of it but don't remember.

my father died wednesday night.
he's been bedridden, paralyzed, and tube fed for nearly five years, so it was more release than tragedy.. those of you who know my story will understand the miserable mix of emotions his passing has caused.
the whole guilt and forgiveness issue shoved itself right up my nose into my forebrain.

Just so you know, I happened upon your story just today on another website and I was greatly saddened, yet encouraged by it.
So I just used your poetry in a thread to share some encouragement with others. Thanks so much for being here...we're here for you too.

this is part of a letter i may send to a friend.. i'm starting to have some real problems over my stand in regard to the society, and i'm starting to get angery with people.. i will tell my story soon.its nothing different or special, i just what to get it of my chest.. anyway in my anger i have written this to a friend.the letter is not written in an angrey tone , it just may be counter-productive to send it.. in your letter the point was raised should i be critical of the society.
this is in line with what the aug 1 2001 watchtower said pg.14 p 8 ...a mature christian ....does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbour private ideas when it comes to bible understanding.
rather he has complete confidence in the truth as revealed by jehovah through his son jesus and the faithful and discrete slave.
Nice letter Sleepy,
I appreciate those comments.
I 'escaped' from the wt society by dismantling the bible itself in criticism. What I mean is that when conflict arose in my life, I quickly found the source was in the book we called God's word.
I didn't have much resentment toward the organization because I saw why it was misguided.
But more and more I realize that others really have faith in the bible, and are being devoured by their trust in the disseminators of its knowledge.
Thank you for your comments.
Apply the same logic you used in your letter toward the bible, if the conflict does not resolve for you; it also claims hold over your thinking in many ways.
I am sure your faith and personal integrity can handle the challenge.
Nice comments also rf and barry. Check my quote --- it says everything.

g'day bible students, .

i have long contended that the "most high" of exodus 4 is non other that jethro the "most high priest of midian".
Hey Unclebruce,
I don't know about the Egyptian connection. Something about that fascinates me as well; I have read for example that the Egyptians practiced circumcision. I don't know how well documented this is. A little research would be fun.
Yes, now, about the book. An ISBN was impossibile to find on the book itself. (the book was written in 1911; probably no such thing back then) So I looked it up over a library system. No luck with the ISBN, but...
...anyhow, the other pertinent information:

Title: The two religions of Israel; with a re-examination of the prophetic narratives and utterances. By the Rev. T. K. Cheyne.

Judaism
Prophets
So far I have only read some of this book. The copy I have is most likely the first edition; it's pages are so fragile that it's hard to handle.
The overall point of the book seems to be that the strongest influence on Israelite religion was from Northern Arabia, not Assyria, Babylonia (Ur), or Egypt. If I find the time I'd like to run a references search on this and see what is the modern concensus. It's hard to separate what might be pure speculation.
cheers!

a lot of people are curious about what evidence there is in the fossil record for evolution.. check out scientific american, for a good example of whales.
(there was a good article there also in 2001 about the chemical origins of life, but i can't find it online) lotsa free info, and it's drawn from modern research.. .

Is that the whale that swallowed Jonah? lol
It crawled up on shore and spit him out for the whale babies to eat.
Jonah said 'hell no, I'm going back to Ninevah!'
