Not sure if there's another thread like this on here....but a list of all the differences between the NWT and other bibles would be awesome. Those are some great examples, Chalam. BTW...I sent you a message on Facebook
I didn't know any of that.
....what the heck have i gotten myself into .
as a sidenote, in genesis 21....abraham threw isaac a party on the day he was weaned.
check out the history on that and find out what other religions believe about that (i checked out the jewish & baptist websites).

Hmmmm, lots to think about.
God loves us in SPITE of what we do, not because of it, its God's gift of Grace to Us. I like this concept. Oompa, you didnt like the video? SHEESH!
i've emailed this to several people now so figured i might as well post it and share with all.
the following information has been compiled from various sources on the web, including jwfacts.com and free minds.
a fraction of it is from my own mind.
wow, you are a busy little bee!....just wanted to comment on here to keep track of this thread. Good work! Ok, continue on Blue, continue on

Anyhow, try it for yourself. Read the NIV or pretty much any version save the NWT. Now if you listen out for the Holy Spirit, He will soon teach you. Before you know it you will be homeschoooled for sure :) What does NIV stand for? Chalam, I do pray & hope to find guidence. I'm ready for the skooLin'! Can you see how frusterating this is (probably, you do 'cuz you've been in my shoes)? its like once I start reading one thing, there's always something else and something ELSE to read. its neverending. Its exhausting. Its overwhelming. I guess this go-round, I'm just going to read the NWT from Genesis to Revelation. And I can't wait for my new book to arrive in the mail. And, trust me Chalam, I am very tempted to do as you say & compare...if I can rustle up the energy, I most certainly will do it
SixofNine...enjoyed your comment & I just checked out that thread. While my brain is a little tired from reading so much, I just cant seem to stop
Jewel, that was cute.
Loubelle, I concur. Mentioning the weaning party thing kinda felt a little out of control, like we were both stating our opinions without empathizing with the other's thoughts....I was at fault too . I see what you're saying. I'm trying to pull out info from Steven Hassan's Releasing the Bonds & realize I've got to analyze the way our conversations are going & figure out what is going to raise questions in my loved one's mind.

Told ya it was funny. i would NEVER use the Bible on my sensitive tushy! Elsewhere, never stop learning. I got that from a commercial . I just wanna learn the good, the bad, and the ugly.
i just got a return visit from a couple of jw that visited me last month.
all was very nice and friendly.
i have inadvertantly agreed to a study of sorts and figure it might be an interesting challenge for me to try out my newfound knowledge/information with them.
just saw this thread & thought it was interesting

Well, ebay just sent me a confirmation saying the book Primate recommended is on its way. Thanks for the thumbs-up, Dagney
Chalam, yes, I am reading the NWT . I am trying to build rapport & trust with my sis (although we already have a good bond). I'm trying not to ruffle too many feathers at this point. She's a diehard JW and would probably put her guard up if I said I wanted to read an alternate translation. Is it really THAT different?
frankiespeakin...I hear ya. I'm looking with a whole different perspective. Of course, I've never actually read the Bible....I used to have a very hard time even preparing for meetings. So this truly is a new experience.
I don't want to totally knock Christianity at this point. In fact, I went to a Methodist Church yesterday and got a bit teary eyed about 4 times during the service. People weren't love bombing me or anything...it was just a really weird feeling of true warmth. My husband said "I don't get it. You dont even believe in the Bible. Why'd you get emotional??" Believe it or not, even us non-christians appreciate true feeling and love and acceptance. I'm not sure where I'll end up on this journey. I may decide Jesus was just a man who is part of the 'truth', like Buddha. Who knows. At this point, I just think god is a meany-head in Genesis & that video that was posted here keeps crackin' me up
i can't believe it.
i've actually had two studies with my sister from that book.
yesterday, she told me i was being argumentative.
Chapter 4...
I felt a tad confused throughout the study today. We only got to paragraph 10...there was an asterisk that referred us to pgs.197-199, where it discusses how they came to certain dates. I think I had too much coffee today because my brain kept jumping like Dori from Finding Nemo.
As mentioned above, we are also reading the bible, cover to cover...in our own separate time. I'm up through Genesis 27...so far its very tough to see god as a loving god. I got the giggles while I was reading one of the paragraphs in this book & my mind started to go back to my bible reading & I pictured Rebeka putting the skins of baby goats on her son Jacob to make him hairy like his brother & it supposedly tricked Isaac.
We also discussed birthdays a little more. I mentioned Genesis 21:8 where it appears Abraham threw a party for Isaac on the 'day he was weaned', which was customarily done on the child's birthday. I checked out a few different religion's websites and that is their conclusion. My sister basically said that it looks to her that it was a one-time-only celebration of his being weaned & that its okay for jw's to celebrate those kinds of things. *sigh*
