A fascinating glimpse into the wacky and sinister world of Scientology
by cedars ini've spent the last couple of days reading up on scientology.
there is a new book out by lawrence wright called "going clear," which i really want to buy and read.. going clear is based on wright's article in the new yorker where he explores scientology through the experiences of paul haggis, a celebrated hollywood director who defected in 2009.. here's a two-part news report on haggis and scientology, featuring wright's opinions as an outsider investigating the organization.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=men7nb--q7w.

Dilemna on shepherding
by happy@last inmy wife told me of a friend of hers who is going through a difficult time in their life.
they are what i would describe as a 'blind follower' of wt teachings, but it does give them structure that would otherwise not be there in their life.
anyhow, this person is having a tough time, the elders know about it and yet not one of them has either visited or called to see how they are!.

If they wanted to help they'd be there already. Your wife can probably do more for her friend than they can.
Btw it's dilemma.

The Other Side of the Indian Rape Story
by fulltimestudent ini'm posting this story, not to defend an indefensible act, but to try to provide some balance.
the fact is that so many indians exist in a poverty so deep that it's difficult for westerners to even understand.
the youngest of the rapists in the now world known rape story, according to this uk, independent newspaper story, grew up in that world that seems hopeless.

Rape is usuallY not seen as being about sex per se, but power. Judging by the population explosion sex isn't a commodity in short supply in India. There is no need to force sex on another person in any situation I can envisage, and most definitely not as a gang. These dreadful offences are about taking advantage of weaker people for selfish reasons - nothing more, nothing less.

Are you now ashamed of how gullible you were as a JW?
by biometrics innow that you realise how idiotic some of the jw beliefs are/were, do you feel ashamed of how gullible you were to believe them?.
if anything my past as an adult jw makes me understand how easily manipulated people are by the people and environment around them.
and that even intelligent people can be influenced beyond what is rational..

I feel embarrassed to mention I was ever a JW but the anger has long since subsided. It did have a massive effect on my life in many ways, most of them negative. At the time, in the early 80s, when I was still in my late teens, access to information about them was much more limited and I didn't really have anyone who showed much of an interest in me or who acted as a mentor. I don't feel I was gullible, more vulnerable.

How many went from christian to something else?
by Satanus ini noticed some posters who used to argue along christian lines, but don't do so, anymore.
granted, it's a tough line to keep to on this forum.
i would be interested to hear (read) of people who came here as believers, and then transitioned to unbeliever, and the reasons for that.

Had a non-religious upbringing but nominal Roman Catholic. Then became practicing catholic at university. Whilst there got snared by JWs. In for about 5 years. Now agnostic. Not interested in any organised religion.

Wow, I seem to have made it out alright..
by GoodGuyGreg inhi, new member here, but i've lurked for a while.. for obvious reasons, i won't give too many details about myself, but i thought i'd share my story of what might in the end have been the easiest fade in recorded history.
it's going to be a wall of text, and i'm writing it mostly for myself to get it out of my system, but it is, of course, a pretty open forum, so any comments and most questions are welcome.. here goes:.
what made me realize ttatt was legalism.
