So.. back to the question raised a few times...if we accept for a moment that demons exist, and that they can control a person.. how would we know the difference between that and some mental illness?

EP has raised some interesting points. I'd love to hear the answer.

From my reading of it, the point of the thread was to discuss experiences. Not submit to amateur analysis.
There is a difference between exploring whether an experience is 'a demonic attack' and asserting that the person reporting it has some kind of mental illness, some other disorder, is lying or gullible surely? This is particularly the case when one doesn't know the person reporting their experience.
When considering any out-of-the-ordinary experience, it is perhaps prudent not to jump to conclusions either way but to discuss what the possibilities are and narrow down the cause. This can only be done by questioning. Of course many assume that a spirit-related cause is not possible and that narrows the possibilities down, for them. Some assume the only cause is spirit-related which is clearly not reasonable in many cases. Not everyone has the same view of the world and many of us have experiences which others would find it impossible to accept without personal direct experience ourselves.
Mental illness still has a stigma in the mind of many. It is clearly going to annoy or insult people if the immediate reaction to their report is to suggest it must be some kind of mental illness or other impairment. Though this may be the cause in a particular case, getting a person to see that requires some tact.
Still Thinking asked how one could tell the difference between a demonic attack and some kind of mental disorder or illness. To my mind this is the crux of the matter. To jump to a conclusion either way, particularly about a stranger is likely to provoke an unconstructive reaction.

Hm. I understand the point you're making Cofty but might his visceral reaction, as you put it, also tell you more about how certain Heathen feels about his beliefs, based on his own personal experience?

Not really Bohm, one can also have no opinion on a subject, or reserve judgement. One can also challenge people's ideas like cofty is doing - by asking questions. Simply asserting a person is wrong doesn't really carry any more persuasive force than the other person asserting they are right.
When a person reports their experience, it's probably polite not to assert they are mad, stupid or gullible.

So the disgusting human sacrifices (including children) that wiped out plenty of civilizations in an effort to appease the gods have NOTHING to do with the terms stupid and gullible? Why do all religious ideas demand a free pass? If an idea is stupid, then it should be pointed out, religious or not.
You're entitled to your opinion, and I am not in disagreement about the harm done by religions but you're in the minority in the world. Simply insulting believers will not persuade them of their error (if such it is) I don't see the point in simply saying things like your original comment. It's simply rude and unconstructive. What is the point?

Why are humans so stupid and gullible?
...and judgemental.

@ray thanks for replying.
It's hard to know what to make of the occurrence you related. I can see why they might be highly evidential to you, but you can probably see why it wouldn't necessarily carry the same evidential value for other folk. It is always easy to pick holes in other people's experiences, but that doesn't mean they weren't real of course.
I wouldn't say that occult practices are common or that it is common knowledge in the UK. What makes you say that?
Those who don't believe in Jesus won't be impressed by his purported belief in demons either I guess.
Thanks for adding detail.

@ray - why wouldn't a psychological explanation be equally as valid?
