Typical email exchange I just had with a JW
by jwfacts inmost of the emails that i receive from jws are short and to the point - i am wrong and jehovah will soon exact vengeance on me.
they never identify where i am wrong.
here is a typical one.

Maybe one of the reasons that they seem to be impervious to rational arguments is that the indoctrination process often takes account of many of the arguments that are likely to be presented by opposers - it is quite clever really. If I tell you that a thing is so and you trust me, when someone presents the counter argument it leaves a person with a decision to make about which version to accept. Perhaps often, unless the person concerned can and will do their own independent research, they cannot reach a conclusive decision and stick with what they already accept.

JW opinions on gay adoption
by serenitynow! inthe whole prop 8 thing reminded me of a conversation i had with my aunt a couple of years ago- when i was inactive but mentally still a jw.
there was a "sister" who died young leaving her 4 daughters orphaned between the ages of 5-11 approximately.
my aunt was telling me the story, telling me that the kids' aunt & uncle in my aunt's kh went ahead and took the kids in.

Surely raising children as JWs means they face challenges too? I always recall the JW kids at my school were regarded as being a bit freaky.

I would not been keen on allowing any members of a religion like JWs etc, that indoctrinates its children, to adopt or foster.

Surely the person's religion is irrelevant?
Imagine if everytime a someone did a kind or noble act their religious affiliations were mentioned -
- Roman Catholic helps old lady across road;
- Atheist donates savings to charity;
- Muslim fireman risks life to save family in earthquake disaster etc etc
Maybe is is worthy of mention because it is so unusual to hear of JWs doing something selfless for those outside their religion? Perhaps the person mentioned their religion as an opportunity to market JWs?
On the other hand - my own experience is that in such matters JWs are a cross-section of society and are not intrinsically individually any less inclined to help others in an emergency or to offer kindness - though I suspect their priorities are influenced by their beliefs and they do isolate themselves to a greater or lesser extent from their neighbours unless there is a chance of conversion. That doesn't mean they haven't done any number of the awful things we read on here but that is this not the same for those of all or no religious persuasions?
This being a forum populated on the whole by ex-JWs - it surely isn't strange to find the focus on the behaviour of member of this pointless religious sect.

"Where else would we go?" - A common JW cliche'.
by Crisis of Conscience inhow many times have you heard that before, whether in or out?
in the past, i truly believed that.
if i were to leave the "truth", where else would i go?.

It occurs to me that for many, religious indoctrination of one form or another starts very early on. Even if one does switch religion at some point, the original assumptions and programming don't necessarily change much, if at all.
As OnTheWayOut mentioned earlier - the assumption is often that there is a 'True Religion' out there somewhere,'I just need to find it' or 'God' will show it to me. Unless one can step outside tihs framework and think critically it seems to me to be easy, even perhaps unavoidable, that a person would end up back at the beginning of the circular thinking. Unless the fundamental assumptions can be challenged progress will be difficult, if not impossible.
As OMG mentioned, WT does a good job of poisoning the well as far as other religions are concerned, so unless it is possible to break out of the circular reasoning I can see how difficult it can be for a person to shake off such a carefully crafted and medacious strategy as the JW teachings.
Once out, for whatever reason, one has an opportunity to rationally consider the full picture, and these days there is a great deal of information around to help that process. I suspect that many react fearfully and grab for the nearest religion that matches their programming to fill the void. It is clear though that at least some do not, and remain outide orgnised religion as either atheists, agnostics or 'spiritual' and that others go back into orgnaised eligion of one form or another but with perhaps a more balance view.

If the bible is god's handbook for man, why is it such gobbledegook?
by Aussie Oz ini don't mean the basic moral code of behavior (that many non biblical lands also just happen to have) that people use to model their lives, but the 'deeper' stuff.... assuming that god has had his divine plan for vindicating himself etc ever since he figured that adam may screw up, and he needed to let faithful mankind know the 'plan' and how to survive it all.... why is the important stuff all gobbledegook?.
the time frame, prophecy, signs and so on are all so obscure that even the cleverest theologians can't understand it or agree on it.
the 'truth' is so muddled and juggled up that every understanding can be logically challenged with an equally challengable one.

It was me who Stephen called an atheist, simply because I used an image from a website that called itself “proud atheist”. I had not said anything about being an atheist, because I am not. But Stephen’s leap in logic is just one example of his inability to discuss anything involving logic and sound reason
Thanks BP - I thought I had missed something, apparently not (other than the right name )

I am not sure why Oz was described as an atheist earlier in the thread - I don't know whether he is or not but just because a person doesn't accept Jesus, or Christianity or the Bible, surely that doesn't imply they are an atheist?

I agree with Pistoff. This is not an intellectual exercise. I gave up a military career based on this hooey.

How to respond to "Whoelse is preaching the good news worldwide?"
by EndofMysteries inthis scripture stands out to me...... 1 cor 1:17-21 for christ dispatched me, not to go baptizing, but to go declaring the good news, not with wisdom of speech, that the torture stake of the christ should not be made useless.. 18 for the speech about the torture stake is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is gods power.
19 for it is written: i will make the wisdom of the wise [men] perish, and the intelligence of the intellectual [men] i will shove aside.
20 where is the wise man?

I remind them that the Mormon boys who moved in next door, where the need was great, have made way more than ten times more converts. Who had Jehovah's blessing?
and I dread to think how many people bought BP shares.
