I hope Leolaia will weigh in on this subject (not to minimize the value of bluesapphire, my struggle and little sister's posts). Leo? Where are you?

New to this site....
by TanCatLuvr ini am so thrilled to find this forum.
it is such a relief to know that all of us 'apostates' are normal people who had the nerve to question what has been crammed down our throats.. i am 4th generation ex-jw with family members at bethel, doing missionary work, and pioneering.
even though i have been out for almost 20+ years, i still had guilt admitting to myself that this was a cult-like organization until just recently.

TanCat: You are most welcome here. We will all carry scars for a long time, maybe permanently. But that doesn't mean healing can't happen. This is a good place to heal. There's tremendous comfort in finding out you're not alone.

Borg cubes inbound!
by sd-7 inwell, as my suspicious side suspected, my wife has rather suddenly flipped the script on me.
she got confused after i explained reality to her, and by coincidence the elders are now going to do a shepherding call on us.
after having read my e-mail (see 'drawing disciples after myself?

SD-7, it's the moment many of us try to put off indefinitely. I wish you courage and a clear mind. It sounds like you've prepared though--the most important thing is how you've done the research for yourself and not just to win a fight. You now know what's real and what's not. Please, please let us know what happens.
Mickey Mouse--you are hilarious!!! I love it!!

The Watchtower Society: aka "The Dream Killers"
by JimmyPage indo you have talent as a musician?
how much better would it be if you focused on pioneering!.
are you artistic?

And the worse thing is how guilty you feel if you do have the audacity to go to college or to a dance. This "dream killing" is the one area where I struggle not to feel bitter. It is akin to a living murder, taking away a teen's dream, stomping it down and grinding it under the organizational heel. Most kids only want to please their parents.
I think back to myself, reading and writing stories every moment I had the whole time I was growing up, getting straight A's, obviously academically inclined. And I was encouraged to go to secretarial school for 6 mos. (not that there's anything wrong with being a secretary). I still remember the sick feeling in my stomach, reading the brochure. Yes, I went and I aced it, of course. I'm not trying to brag--God knows I'm no Leolaia--but it just wasn't for me.
Okay, okay. I'm in graduate school now and in my 40's. It's okay. It's all okay.

AllTimeJeff, yes we certainly are two different generations of Gilead
But they overlap, right?
Welcome, notsure, welcome. It's a painful transition to make from being "sure of all things" to being...well, not sure of anything. Your concerns regarding your children are valid, but I don't think you'll take anything away from them by being honest. You sound like an incredibly well-balanced, reasonable and caring person and the love and respect they undoubtedly have for you will likely only grow, particularly since it sounds like you didn't force this religion on them in any harsh or critical way.
I, too, am a mother with an elder husband and child. My husband is totally aware of the inconsistencies and dishonesty within the teachings of this organization yet chooses to ignore it. My child is caught b/w two worlds, but I've told him that I will never lie to him, I will always be completely honest with him even if its hard to do. So he knows where I stand and is developing a, shall we say--spirit of critical inquiry?

How long is a "generation"?
by cameo-d inthere seems to be so much controversy over defining what exactly a 'generation' is.. i have heard it said a generation is 25 years; some claim it is 40 years; and some even say 70 years.. i think the scriptures describe the 70 years as life expectancy, with mightiness 80 years or something like that.. i don't think it is accurate to define the length of generation as the same length of time as life expectancy, but i could be wrong.. .
anyway, i am wondering if anyone has ever done the math on this scriptural clue:.
matthew 1:17 so all the generations from abraham to david are fourteen generations; and from david until the carrying away into babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into babylon unto christ are fourteen generations.. if one follows the lineage and a date timeline, would this give more accurately the approximation of a generation?.

In Exodus, the Israelites who resisted the encouraging report of Joshua and Caleb and who wanted to return to Egypt were condemned to wander in the wilderness until "they and all their generation" died out, the "they" being those of 20 years and up. How long before "all their generation" died out and the new generation was able to enter the Promised Land? 40 years. Ta-da!
This fits nicely with some of the other posts here (sorry, I'm terrible w/remembering who posted what), in particular with Jesus' own words in Matt that the generation he was speaking to would not disappear b/f his prophecy re Jerusalem came to fruition. Which, of course, happened about 37 years later--within a standard 40-year generation.

"This isn't the GB saying this...it's Jehovah saying this."
Just think about the implication of this. Especially given their success rate when it comes to getting anything right. Yikes.
You know, it dawned on me yesterday that I very well may be agnostic. I've avoided thinking about this but maybe it's time.

I just came back from having breakfast with some of my new friends--and its a Sat morn, too!! LOVE IT!!--and they are incredibly smart, funny, well-travelled and--get this--really good listeners who listen to me without immediately responding, "Oh leave it in Jehovah's hands" or other nonsense...AND they're about 20 years younger than me and take me for who I am. Could I imagine having breakfast with the single 20-somethings in my hall? HA!!!

What I found jaw-dropping about the WCG video (and admittedly, I didn't watch the whole thing)--Armstrong predicted 1975 too??!!!???? Does anybody here know more about that???? When did he start predicting 1975 and could that have had any effect on the WTS's own prediction?
