  Do You Need to Learn Hebrew and Greek? (WT 11/01/09)

  i'm sure quite a few of you on the board remember the km that discouraged learning the biblical languages.

  well, here are scans of this newer article from the nov public wt.

  very boring read with little direct prohibitions (understandable since its for outsiders), but still a bit of an eye roller with their reasons for not bothering to learn them.

  This is such a contrast to the churches that I have attended where the pastors actually encourage you to study biblical Greek & Hebrew. The languages that the bible was written in are so much more descriptive than the English language so a bible scholar (or really any Christian) is really missing out by not studying those languages. I took a class in biblical Hebrew and I found it to be absolutely fascinating and it really enhanced my understanding of certain scriptures.

  I think the WT discourages JWs from studying those languages because anyone with a true understanding of biblical Greek & Hebrew would see right through the NWTs inferior & misleading translation. I challenged my mother once about why JWs don't study those languages and she actually said "we don't need to because those guys at Bethel are pretty smart and they translate the scriptures better than we could."

  I received the exact same email a couple months ago except it was called Friends vs. Southern friends. That one actually made sense.

  PSacramento, I agree. Like, passwordprotected I am not ignorant of some of the bad things that so-called Christians have done. But the fact is that no one is perfect and people, religious or not, are capable of doing bad things. There are good people & bad people regardless of religion. Sitting in a church doesn't always necessarily make you a good person.

  Just because a Christian does something bad doesn't mean that every Christian is a bad person. But the newspapers sure do love to print things like "Baptist caught with prostitute" but you never see "Atheist assaults wife" or "Non-churchgoer molested children". I think it's because most people have the incorrect perception that Christians think we're perfect & better than everyone else. It's actually quite the opposite, we know we're sinners and bound to screw up.

  It's unfortunate that ones like Fred Phelps, the JWs, etc take the bible out of context and twist Christianity into something that it's not. They focus on what they perceive as sin instead of focusing on Jesus' command to love and forgive our fellow man.

  Let's face it, we all have something in our lives that we have faith in. Whether it's God, dis-belief in God, evolution, love, trusting other people, etc, it doesn't matter. To call someone crazy for having faith is pretty narrow-minded in my opinion.

  We all have our own opinions & belief systems. But to tar one group with the same brush, name-call & to spew hatred is just plain ignorant and immature. It seems that some people on these boards (believers & non-believers alike) still seem to be stuck in the "I'm right and everyone else is wrong" JW mentality. You are doing EXACTLY the same thing that Jehovah's Witnesses are doing. You haven't changed one bit.

  I have friends from all walks of life because I don't put myself in a box. I wouldn't dream of calling an atheist, agnostic, Buddhist, hindu, etc crazy because I have RESPECT for my fellow man. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing but you can do it in a civilized fashion w/o the disrespect & name-calling.

  I met a girl a few years ago that told me that she was kidnapped from a Canadian hospital as an infant to avoid a blood transfusion. At the time, I thought hers was an isolated incident. I had no idea that this was so widespread! I live about 15 min. from the Canadian bethel and it's chilling to think they were hiding children so close to my home.

  Good for Ms. Ryder for speaking out about this! Does anyone know if she posts on this forum? I'm going to write the National Post and thank them for publishing this article. Most newspapers probably wouldn't bother with a JW story. Thanks for posting the link!

  All Bethelites were to 'stay' in the building they were in until it was time to go home. Until then...no walking between the buildings and all buildings are locked down--for security. (They had one man on the street run in for 'safety'...and they don't want any 'strangers' coming in!).

  How Christ-like of them. This reminds me of when my step-son told me that "the good thing is that we don't have to send anything to the Tsunami victims because there were no JWs affected."

  has your life been "blessed" since leaving?

  while in the org we are constantly told that if we just tow the line and behave that will we be blessed and everything we want will come to us.

  personaly i havn't found that to be the case in the 30 years i spent trying to tow the line.. but now i've left wonderfull things are starting to happen in my life and i'm so very happy!.

  so i wondered, have you encountered more "blessings" or less since leaving?.

  My life only got better after leaving the JWs. And after I found the Lord those blessings were only magnified. I find that I am filled with a joy that I could only dream of as a JW.

  I think one of the biggest blessings i have is knowing that my friends love me for me, not because of what religion I am or how "good" I am. It's hard to trust someone when you know they will shun you if you fail to live up to their impossible standards. I now have friends that I know will be there no matter what.

  My JW Daughter sends a Letter to us Explaining her Shunning of Me

  my wife and i sent my 22 yr.old pioneer witness daughter and her husband a anniversary card and $ 40.00 and flowers the end of april.

  my daughter wrote mrs. flipper and me each our own individual letters thanking us initially for the gifts - and then went into detail as to why she has not spoken to me for over a year and shunned me.. keep in mind as i paraphrase some of the highlights to these letters that the only negative thing i have said about the organization to my daughter in 3 years was to show her the ap news release about the child abuse settlements by the wt society .

  i'll quote parts of the letter to mrs. flipper first :.

  I'm so sorry to hear this. We are going through a similar situation with my two step-children. At least Mrs Flipper received a nice letter from your daughter! My step-daughter is blaming everything on me and and telling people that her father left the JWs because he loves me more than his own children.

  One of his books actually gives examples of him conversing with Jehovah's Witnesses and I think we are going to re-read that example before writing my daughter back.

  Do you know which book it is? I'd like to check it out.
