OOh! When was that thing said about Avatar??? My father came in while I was watching it a couple months ago and said "You shouldn't be watching that, it's got spiritism!" I was dumbfounded and asked him to show me exactly WHERE as it was a sci-fi movie with a made-up character base and belief system. He couldn't show me, all he said was "It was brought out at the last assembly that Avatar isn't good...you're mother won't be happy if she comes home and you're watching that". I just rolled my eyes and thought This is ludicrous. I know the WBTS has, in the past, hinted at certain movies and TV shows being inappropriate, but never mentioned them by name...just let you figure it out yourself and come to your own conclusion. I guess now they're naming names? I guess maybe Star Wars should be mentioned as well? With it's use of The Force, and all... And quite a few other movies popular with JW's as well. Scratch any and all Disney cartoons. Unbelievable. Outlawing Avatar is a huge stretch.

WTF???
by headisspinning inhttp://www.seanet.com/~raines/review.html.
the society at the time believed that some demons or fallen angels were honest and could be saved and return to god's organization.
[6] angels and women, they believed, was channeled or "dictated" to the author by one such fallen angel who was honest and told the truth about pre-flood conditions on earth.

The secret of how Christianity spread across the world
by Terry inwhat i am going to say may sound nasty and mean-spirited.
i assure you it is not intended in that tone.. men are power seekers and control freaks.
without using women as drones to do the grunt work of religion.

@ designs: Highest titled woman? I'd have to say a Missionary or Special Pioneer or something like that. But either way, they are usually accompanied by a man. But the highest POSITION, where there is no title, but they are acknowledged as higher than most women, would probably be the wives of the GB members. On a congregational level, you have elder's wives and CO's wives where the same principle applies.
I tried discussing this with my mom the other day. I am adamant that my daughter will NOT grow up to be a "nothing". And to me, that's what an elder's wife, a pioneer, etc. are. What are they??? What do they have outside of their title that no one else in the world but JW's cares about? NOTHING. Toilet scrubbers, book salespeople (who don't get paid), and a trophy on the arm of the man they marry if he's of high rank. She tried to say this wasn't true...that sisters can go and get a trade if they want to... They can go and take a CNA course! Or Home Health Aide! Um...be that as it may, are those courses from colleges? I mean, are they encouraged to learn MORE than just the focus of what they are being certified for? No, they are not. Anything over a few weeks or months of worldly education is frowned on. I know a young sister who wanted to go to community college for a 2 year Associates Degree...her elder father "encouraged" her to pioneer instead and dangled the "you can live at home rent-free" carrot. That was 2 years ago. She would have been almost done with her degree. And instead, she pioneers and works 2 part time jobs. That will not be my daughter. When I was married, I had to depend solely on my husband because he didn't allow me to do anything but "my job" (raising the kids and cleaning the house). I was educated and had a good job before we met. Now, I'm furthering my education, I have a good job, and I know I can make it on my own. I want that for my little girl. She needs to know she is MORE than just the value a man gives her.
Amazingly, I never made the "your first mentor is a woman, yet women are to be silent in the congregation" connection! That kinda blew my mind a bit.
I think, Terry, your observations are insightful. I've never really looked at things from that angle, but it makes a lot of sense. Myself, I like reading about how women influenced the world. The ancient religions/belief systems revered women as the bringers of life. There was polarity and balance, gods and goddesses, the two aspects of the divine. Even in the romance languages you have masculine and feminine words. It's quite intriguing to me. I guess I have never been "submissive" (and I was accused of that many times over my marriage lol). I am more strong-willed than most JW women and I never bought into the whole "You have a penis so you're over me" stuff. In my mind, I have a uterus and someone like me brought your penis into this world, so I'd say we're pretty even lol.

Oh jeez, the whole "cords of three strands are stronger" bullshit... GAH!
I met my ex and was engaged to him 3 weeks later, married 5 months later. We lasted 7 years...but we were miserable from the get-go. He remarried 7 weeks after our divorce was final (I gave him "scriptural grounds"). So unless he was seeing this sister while we were still married, he jumped the gun yet again.
I, on the other hand, have recently made my way into the SERIOUSLY dating world and marriage is the furthest thing from my mind, as well as my bf's. I'll never marry again. Those who marry someone without knowing them and depend on an invisible presence to keep them together are in for a rude awakening...as was I.

The JW funeral talk outline - poor taste or REALLY poor taste?
by Mr. Falcon inso i attended a funeral for a jw who passed away (non-"annointed) and i would have to state that although i have heard the standard funeral talk outline for dozens of funerals i've attended, i never really took the time to listen.
and my god, i was cringing.
the outline is essentially broken down like this:.

Yes this is quite normal in Watchtowerland. And, amazingly, they see nothing wrong with it. It's a 45-minute sales pitch, just like every other JW event. The Memorial is nothing more than a very formal infomercial with a smattering of Jesus thrown in for good measure. The whole premise of it is absurd and completely flies in the face of what Jesus actually taught.
I've been to quite a few worldly funerals...this past winter, I was invited to sing for one and my friend gave the eulogy. It was a LOVELY service and the family was so happy with it. I left feeling like I knew the woman, although I'd never met her.
Hey Falcon, I see your Alec and raise you a Moe, Larry, and Curly... This is who's REALLY running Brooklyn...

I committed un-suicide yesterday
by AlmightyDog inyesterday i opened my wallet and took a long look at the (no) blood card prominently displayed inside.
i have been convinced that this is not the truth for a couple of years now, and am trying to figure out whether to fade or da.
it hit me hard yesterday that with this piece of paper in my wallet, i could possibly end up dying for beliefs i no longer hold.

When I changed over my license last year, I made sure it was known I wanted to be an organ donor. I'm yet to get a blood donor card, but that's next on the list....I also registered to vote...

Evolution of a Con
by Resistance is Futile inhelp me out here, ive never been a jw (family are in the cult) but im trying to fully understand the madness that is their doctrine and subsequent mind control over their captive members.
its seems logical that they will eventually abandon the 144,000 doctrine as being a literal number.
time is the enemy of a false prophet.

I think there will always be those who claim to be of the "Annointed"...because, really, who can refute them? It's supposed to be a "feeling" they get and that's pretty much it. To accuse someone of lying about being of the "Annointed" is basically to call them out on their personal relationship with god...so no one asks questions of someone who makes the claim. That means that you will see the numbers of partakers steadily rise, as they have been. The WBTS can always excuse this, claiming that some partake without having the heavenly hope, that not all who go to the Memorial and partake are of the "Annointed", or even JW's, for that matter...or that perhaps some of the "Annointed" fell away and thus needed to be replaced (which would still theoretically keep the numbers the same, though many don't really think about that part). The GB being "Annointed" is their authority... They have to keep that in place or they'll lose their hold on the rank and file. They won't let that doctrine go.
PERHAPS they'll say the 144,000 isn't a literal number...but it's so precise in the Bible, I don't know how the heck they'd justify saying it's symbolic. However, they're guilty of just picking and choosing what's symbolic and what's not.
