Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I want nothing to do with religion in general, but especially the JW's. It's all lies, deception, and a money-making scheme. No truth in any religion whatsoever. I'm happy living my "heathen" life.

I went to the Watchtower Study with the "Selma and Steve" article today, and....
by cedars inno, i didn't really - but i'm anxious to hear from anyone who did!!.
what happened after the paragraph was read?
did anyone try to denounce abusing one's spouse under any circumstances, or were most answers supportive of the "advice" given to selma, i.e.

I thought about calling my mom to see what she thought of this article, but I figured "What's the point?". She'd just defend the Society anyway.
A few years ago, I had a very close friend who had been being abused by her MS husband. His father was an elder and was, you guessed it, abusing his own wife. My friend got to the point where she couldn't take anymore. He began when they first got married. It started with shoves, grabbing her wrists and leaving bruises, and escalated a few years later to punching her anywhere the bruises wouldn't show. One Saturday, she disagreed with him on something and he dragged her to the back of the apartment, threw her on the bed, pinned her hands above her head with ONE of his hands, and proceeded to punch her stomach and ribs. The kids were watching this and begging him to stop and he turned on them. It just so happened that week I was in town visiting my parents...she had hidden this for YEARS, not telling me because she knew I hated him to begin with. I went to visit her and she lost it. She had no idea what to do. She called elders that weren't related to them and asked for advice, but the most they could give her was "You have to do what you feel is right...we can't counsel you on this and tell you what you should do". So I asked her "Are you ready for it to stop?". She started sobbing, threw her arms around me and said "YES!!". So I watched her children and mine while she went to the courthouse with our friend and filed a restraining order. They went to the hardware store and when they got back, the other friend and I changed all the locks and then got all the kids together and left to go to her house to wait for him to be served when he got home. Afterward, the family was LIVID that she did this to him. People were coming over and harrassing her, including some elders who were related to her husband. They kept telling her she was being unsubmissive, she needed to let him come back, this isn't Jehovah's way, blah blah blah. She stuck to her guns until the court date. The judge ordered anger management for him and because of all of this, the elder body took away his privileges and his father was NOT ALLOWED to be in the room while he was counselled. Years later, they're apparently doing okay. My dad checks in with her and makes sure that nothing is going on. He already said a long time ago that he would step down (he's a MS) and kick the man's ass if he ever put his hands on her again. He said "I don't care, I'll give up my privileges and show him what it's like to get a dirty beating!".
Another sister married a man she had dated years before when they were both "worldly". She had no idea he had been studying. He got baptized and it must have been "Jehovah's will" that they meet again, so they started dating and got married. And then the abuse started. He made her switch congregations to one where she had no friends. He stopped her from seeing all of her friends and talking to them on the phone. He even stopped her from talking to her adult kids. No matter how much she talked to the elders, they just told her to be more submissive. In other words, he's your husband and what he says goes. If he doesn't want you having friends or putting on makeup, then by god you'd better not! Eventually, he got so possessive and jealous that he set fire to her home (which she had worked hard for all on her own). This brought the police into the situation and now the MF'er is rotting in prison...yet this sister isn't free to remarry if she wants! She even has to carry his name still!!!
One more example...the previous sentence reminded me of how much we are NOT our own people when we are women in the JW's. My mom studied with a woman and my dad studied with her husband. While they are legally married, they had different last names because it was just easier than having to switch everything over (lots of health care info, insurance info, etc...it's a pain in the ass). Plus she wanted to keep her last name. Well, they both got baptized. At the Kingdom Hall, they all REFUSE to call her by her legal last name and refer to her by her husband's. It chaps my ass because her husband's name IS NOT HERS. So instead of calling her "Sister Jones", they call her "Sister St. John" (names have been changed). It's totally mysoginistic. Her husband doesn't give a crap what she's called and doesn't insist she be called "Sister St. John". The elders do! Because she "falls under his headship, so she has to be known by his last name". Like he friggin' OWNS her. It's like taking your dog to the vet...because you OWN him, he falls under your last name. "Fido St. John". So all that women are in this organization are property...You'll be known by his name, you'll do what he says, and if he hits you just LOVE HIM HARDER and BE MORE SUBMISSIVE. Just like that beaten family dog.

Could be they're doing damage control... A few of us sent the PDF of this article to a few domestic abuse organizations... The responses I got were of shock and disbelief that in this day and age ANY organization would still encourage a woman to remain with her abuser.

2011 Yearbook= BEARDS are still for non-Witnesses ONLY!!!! Beard Fear?
by Witness 007 in1960's the watchtower pictures showed jesus clean shaven and with short hair {watch 1954 p.511 "why do watchtower books now show jesus with short hair and no beard?
....because he is shown that way in representations that are older than the traditional effeminate looking pictures..."}.
yearbook 2011 p.57 "a bearded man named eric showed up at a congregation in the united states {oh god a bearded man!!!

As with everything else, I think it's completely ridiculous. Business men have been growing beards (well-maintained) for awhile now. I believe the consensus was that beards looked "worldly" and didn't look "professional". Apparently, in order to please god you have to look like you're spending a day in the office . But, hey! God's not partial, right??
Here's the thing...if their god "created" them with hair in certain places, then why shave it off? Oh, that's right...we're talking about the same god that made man perfect and then decided he made a mistake and that they should chop their penises... Okay, now it makes sense...

Breastfeeding your child until they are 8 years old

Crunchy granola jabs aside :
In many under-developed countries, children are weaned at 6 years old. Many people think that anything over a certain age is "for the mother", but in reality, breastmilk changes over time to accomodate the nutritional and immunological needs of the child as it grows. This is why breastmilk pumped and frozen when the child is a month old isn't as nutritionally complete for that child when it's thawed for that child at 3 months old. While it's unheard of in the US and other "high-tech" countries where boobs have become so sexualized that a huge number of people choose to feed chemical-laden formula instead of breastmilk because they are uncomfortable with the thought of a child suckling on their boobs, in other countries it's common for older children to nurse.
It's not for everyone, and some who were raised on formula or a strict age limit on breastfeeding wouldn't "get it". I was breastfed until I was almost 3. There is still nutritional value for a child who eats solids as well as breastmilk. I'd rather my child have breastmilk, which is formulated naturally for human children, than cow's milk which is formulated for baby cows.
That said, I wouldn't go so far as to allow my eight year old to nurse. I wouldn't allow a child older than about 4, I would say. The woman in the OP also had her husband nursing off of her as well (there's more to that documentary and I've seen it before), which I think is just plain freaking weird.

Thanks, Zid... I thought of that one for my mom because it's pretty easy to get the point... The cogs in her brain turned for all of 5 seconds before she said " I don't wanna talk about this anymore".

Hi and welcome! I'm really glad you found us!
What has the Watchtower Society to gain by misleading, changing doctrine, etc? Control, Power, and MONEY. Have you any idea how much money they have tied up in real estate and stocks? The numbers would shock you, considering they call themselves "non-profit".
I think you should start at jwfacts.com In my opinion, this is a great resource as it uses the Society's OWN LITERATURE to prove the points discussed. The thing is, you don't need to look at so-called "apostate" material or even outside sources (though you should check into the latter...if it's good enough for the Writing Department at Bethel to do their research from "worldly" sources, it's good enough for everyone else). The Society's own writing is what shows them to be in error. For instance:
~ failed prophecies
~ flip-flops in doctrine
~ lives lost and relationships ruined due to the aforementioned flip-flops (organ transplants are equated to cannibalism, a woman must scream if raped, etc)
Here's the kicker. The JW's like to say that they are the true religion partly because they use "god's name". In reality, the name is in error. It's a bastardization, a botched pronounciation.
Many of their doctrines are not bible-based. Honestly, I hesitate to even give them credit in saying that some of them may be. They employ a method known as "cherry picking" when using the bible or "quote mining" when using secular writings to support their doctrines. There are some wonderful examples of this to be found online. The book "Life How Did it Get Here- By Evolution or Creation?" is FULL of examples of the Watchtower taking what a respected scientist says and picking out the parts that make it look like the quoted individual agrees with Watchtower doctrine, when in fact, this couldn't be further from the truth!
So basically, the doctrine, the organization is founded and run on LIES. Charles Russell (the founder of the Bible Students) was into Pyramidology and the occult and came up with many of his doctrines from employing those means...If he or any of the "founding fathers" (Joseph Rutherford, etc) of the Watchtower were alive today, they'd be disfellowshipped for apostasy!
They like to use the scripture about the "light getting brighter". I'd encourage you to read that entire chapter in order for you to realize that it's not speaking about anything having to do with increasing knowledge in doctrine... In other words, this is a classic "cherry picked" verse. Now, let me give you an example as to why this isn't an accurate verse to use in regard to the Watchtower and it's doctrines.
Let's say you're in a dark room. It's pitch black. However, to your right is a light switch, but it's one of those "dimmer switches". So, you ease the knob slowly, allowing very little light into the room. You notice across the room that there's a chair. On the chair there's some sort of stuffed animal. You can't make out what type, but you know it's a stuffed toy. You turn the knob a little more and see the shadows decrease enough to reveal long floppy ears. Okay, it must me a bunny! You turn it a bit more and see that it has a short snout, the ears are still there, and it IS in fact a bunny. Now, with the next turn of the knob, would it magically turn into an elephant?? No. It would still be a bunny, but the DETAILS would be clearer. Perhaps you'd see it was blue, or you'd see the whiskers and the button eyes...but it would STILL be a bunny. The fact that the light got brighter would not change that. Now, let's apply this to the Watchtower. When a light "gets brighter" in Watchtower understanding, a bunny doesn't remain a bunny. It becomes an elephant. Which we know isn't possible. So the fact that their "bunny" (let's use the example of the "generation" teaching) turned into an elephant...and then back into a bunny...and then back into an elephant...and then, holy crap, now it's a freakin' dinosaur!!...Well, you see that their depiction of the "light getting brighter" can't be accurate. Neither can their answers to questions about things like oral sex or whether a woman has to scream when she's raped in order to not be disfellowshipped be accurate because they keep going back and forth on those things. The light isn't getting brighter, it's flicking on and off like a strobe! I ask you, if they had "Holy Spirit" and were speaking for god through such Holy Spirit, would they be getting things wrong so often and going back and forth? Is the Holy Spirit, and thus god himself, confused and inconstant? Is that the god you serve?
Something to think about.

Apostasy my ass!
by Glander inlet's call it what it is - disagreeing with the watchtower bible and tract society after baptism into the cult.
in no way is the literal definition of the word "apostasy" applicable to what the cult is using the word for.
it is a buzz word that scares the crap out of the rank and file and keeps them from communicating with those who have become enlightened about the cults lies.. we here on jwn have accepted the wt label, "apostates", with a sense of humor, such as calling our get togethers apostafests, etc.. but we are actually the "enlightened"..

I actually wrote a blog post about this awhile back... I'll link it if anyone wants to read it (I know some of you already have). In it, I address the ridiculous notions of the WTBTS and what "apostate" really means. It was pretty therapeutic to write it.

My DA letter ... comments?
by FinchAndWeston inin where it matters, we have not been associating with the b**** congregation for over 6 years.
moreover, we have not identified ourselves as jehovahs witness for about 5 years.
as such, we are informing the congregations that we have already disassociated from the jehovahs witness.. in this regards, we do not wish to be called on when the door to door service is performed either for monthly magazine campaigns, circuit/district assembly notices and memorial night flyers.

PS: If you no longer buy into their BS doctrine and rules, then you are by all accounts an apostate according to their definition. Own it. It isn't a bad title...It just means you woke up and refuse to drink the Koolaid anymore.
