I was 13. I got baptized for a few reasons. Mainly, because I thought there was something missing... I wasn't receiving this "Holy Spirit" stuff. I must not have been because no one in the congregation cared about me or my family, I had no friends, meetings were a terrible experience for me. So it must be some deficit in ME. Baptism would give me Holy Spirit and then I'd gain more understanding! And people would see I was spiritual, despite my worldly dad! And then I'd have friends! The other girls my age were getting baptized, one of them an elder's daughter. So that must be the key! I also thought that maybe it would make Jehovah more "Real" to me because up until that point, I had really started to doubt that he existed. I also felt that my mom needed the support...my brother was on a quick trip to DF-Ville, and she needed someone to be by her side 100% to support her because my dad wasn't a JW...It was only her and I at that point.
The only enlightenment I got after getting baptized was "Surprise! Nothing changes!". Bah.

Quick question, did you feel lonely at the meetings even though you were part of the action?
by Theocratic Sedition injust curious, something i've noticed only lately.
i'm in the mix within the congregation, stay late after the meeting is over, converse with quite a few people afterwards, make plans for saturday and sometimes sunday service and yet i feel so awfully alone walking to my car afterwards.
i feel lonely when i'm talking and laughing with people after the meeting.

The JW environment is not one that is conducive to forming deep personal relationships with others. When you're encouraged to rat each other out, there's a level of trust that you simply cannot reach. Without trust, you can't truly feel connected. JW's love to say "We can go anywhere in the world and walk into a Kingdom Hall and feel like we know each other". Not true. I've walked into many a Kingdom Hall and most of the time felt like a complete stranger and very uncomfortable with these people who I didn't know anything about except for them having the same religion.

Was it all for nothing ? We can't we start over again ?
by raymond frantz ini know 99% of the posts here are for exposing wt doctrines and fallacies ,but there was a time that we really believed that we had full bible understanting .i know now that this is the case ,but why can't we use that as a starting point rather than the end of the road ?
why can't we be more like the jews of john the baptist's day that acknoledged their errors and started over again by whiping the slater clean and getting baptised in expectation of the messiah's coming ?.

I can only speak from personal experience, but once I realized the WT was BS, I started from "the beginning... As in "In the beginning, god created the heavens and the earth". That's right. I studied Bible doctrine itself without looking at this or that religion's interpretation of it. I studied the history of where the Bible came from. When it was compiled. The goings-on in history at that time.
For me, this completely blew the Bible and any other Christian denomination out of the water. I also researched science and other belief systems. I have my own set of "beliefs" that work for me...but they don't involve a belief in any "god", nor do they involve Christianity in any way.
And I'm happy this way. I'm open to other answers, but what I have right now suits me just fine. A jealous Bible god who is out to kill and destroy anyone who doesn't worship him does not suit me at all.

Shelby, thank you so much for sharing this with the group!
To Tyler, Teri, and Robin: I am deeply saddened by the loss of dear Eric. I had a few interactions with him through this board and really identified with what he was going through. I am sincerely sorry for the loss you have suffered and hope that you can eventually find peace in remembering him at his happy times. I only wish that he could see and know the outpouring of love for him and outrage at the situation that led to this that we all have been feeling.

Talent shows at the KH?
by skeeter1 inso, i know of a real talent show that took place at a kingdumb hall about 10 years ago.
there was never another talent show.
but, the jws all loved it and still talk about it.. is there a "rule" or something in the elder's manual about this?

Growing up, there were 50's parties (you couldn't attend if you were under 13, which was so incredibly stupid...the year I turned 13, they stopped doing them). There were square dances. There were talent nights (and even a No Talent Talent Show). There were 80's parties, skating parties, swing dancing parties, etc. I wasn't invited to many of them, but they occured.
None were held at the Kingdom Hall, though. The only events ever held there were meetings, the Memorial, weddings, and funeral services.

Just checked into JWN today and noticed this... Hoping Terry makes a speedy recovery and gets well soon! I had a friend whose dad had cellulitis...Nothing to play with and very painful. Wishing you the best, Terry! As Jim stated, if there's anything I can do (I'm in TX as well), please don't hesitate!

"Suggested" Donation when attending Circuit Assembly
by BluesBrother ini could have called this "fee now charged to go to circuit assembly" but i do not want to start rumours that go beyond what was actually said.
the k hall announcement encouraged attendance at the upcoming assembly day.
the elder then said that since the congregation no longer has to make a blanket donation to the assembly hall it is expected that the publishers remember their responsibility to maintain the costs.

I seem to recall in our district that before the conventions and during the conventions, there was a suggestion made about how much we ought to donate per person per family for the food we took. I also know that there was a breakdown every month of what was owed for use of our own Kingdom Hall (mortgage, utilities, snow removal, etc) and there was usually a deficit because the other congregations never contributed much and we had to cover their asses as well. I do remember a few "resolutions" being cast that each publisher would pay $x at every meeting in order to cover costs for the month.
We still ended up with deficits. Makes me wonder if people were actually not donating or if someone was skimming off the top. All the "surplus" from the end of one month would supposedly get rolled over to the next, but we ALWAYS had a deficit at the beginning of the month somehow.

guilty mate (need Blondie)
by scary21 injw always speak of the innocent mate is free to remarry.
how about this...jw man divorces his jw wife after a very very short period of time... (.wife is bummed ).. before his marriage to her.he had never been married and does not plan.
to ever marry again .
-
Morbidzbaby
I've heard differently. My dad is a MS and from what he said the "guilty" party has to wait until the "innocent" party remarries before they are "free" to date and get married themselves. If the "innocent" mate doesn't forgive, this allows for a divorce, but doesn't free the "guilty" mate to go about their business and remarry before the "innocent" mate does. After my divorce, I was interested in a brother who was also divorced and had been recently reinstated. I was told he wasn't free because his ex-wife had not remarried yet... He was the "guilty" party and their divorce was on grounds of adultery, but he still wasn't free until she made a move.
You couldn't pay me enough to live like that.

Have you ever heard a talk on child molestation following a judicial reproof?
by NVR2L8 inwhen someone is reprimanded by a judicial commitee there is usually a talk given to the congregation about issues that leads to serious sins.
sometimes that talk takes you by surprise because the reproof was private and no announcement was made to the congregation.
other times you figure out why an individual was the object of a judicial commitee...i heard talks on the usage of drugs, cigarettes, pornography, bad forms of intertainment, fornication, adultery, fraud, gambling, disapproved medical treatments...but never on child abusers and mostly how to protect your children against this terrible crime.. do you think the reason there is never mention of child abuse is that if many knew there is a child molester in their midst they would pressure the elders to go to the autorities?
-
Morbidzbaby
Nope. We had a pedophile in our congregation who had molested numerous children and was finally reported to the police. He was disfellowshipped, arrested, and put in prison and his wife eventually divorced him... Yet no talk was ever given.
