since 1935, the watchtower had been categorically teaching (for over 6 decades) that the heavenly calling of the 144,000 anointed christians had ceased in 1935. this teaching was especially significant to older jws (especially those who spent much of their lives serving the watchtower as pioneers, elders, missionaries, bethelites, etc.
) because many of these would eventually turn their attention to the aging governing body members and feel a sense of relief knowing that the end was drawing ever so near.
in other words, as more governing body members (who were born before 1935) passed away, the closer they would get to their long-awaited reward of surviving armageddon and living on paradise earth where they would finally hug grass-eating lions near a waterfall while marveling at snow-peaked mountains in the distance.
This is an interesting thread.

a typical american school day finds some six million high school students and two million college freshmen struggling with algebra.
in both high school and college, all too many students are expected to fail.
I am an advanced a Excel user. You aren't going to be able to write a decent formula without Algebra. So yes, I use my schooling all the time. That Excel analysis means I can extract trends from large data sets, which my bosses value.

jgnat, I see the connection when you say ' I use my schooling all the time.' This makes sense. By the way, is Simon a math wizard?

I did ten percent and doubled it. Easy peasy.
Oubliette |
'ten percent' huh? where is it and can you show the steps you went through? My experiences inform me that learning math would be a bit easy if all the steps are clearly explained including reason why this is why numbers changes and divide instead other way? Getting to know small steps make for the better in understanding the big, and tough math concepts.Thank you Quendi for affirming my answer. By the way, what text book on consumer math do would you recommend me?

how much should I tip on this $25 check at 20%?
$5. The service better have been pretty damn good for a 20% tip! BTW, I did that in my head. [Oubliette] |
I am unsure how you go $5. I do not know if you applied this approach. 20% become 20/100= 0.2. Then $25(0.2) = $5.00 Iam correct with the method?

I'm glad to see this thread revived and I look forward to more comments from others.

Hi Quendi,
You can 'shepherd' visiting posters on this thread through the discussions. One possible option would be to identify relevant, similar or differences as to each poster's experiences with math both as a passion and as a profession. Here you go.

doctor acquitted in post-surgery death of jehovah's witness by kim da-ye.
the supreme court upheld a lower courts decision thursday that a doctor who performed surgery on a jehovahs witness patient without a blood transfusion at her request is not responsible for her death.. .
a 57-year-old doctor, surnamed lee, was charged with occupational negligence leading to the death of his patient who died from complications caused by excessive bleeding during and after hip replacement surgery.. .
Wow, very interesting story. I think, the hospital will use this experience as a teaching reason to draw up a strong disclaimer document with the blessing from attorneys.
