Exactly. We attended a different congregation than we were assigned to for awhile (we had good reasons) and were constantly given flack from the elders about "following theocratic direction" and attending within the proper boundaries.

i often hear scientists and others complain that some religious people are satisfied with "god did it" as an explanation for everything and are uninterested in what science has to say.. i never felt this way as a witness; i always felt that witnesses were very interested in scientific discoveries.. apparently, i was wrong.. r.stuart marshall is a witness with a doctorate from stanford whose life story appeared in the wt 08 12/01.

consider this telling anecdote from that article:.

the university of california wanted funds to compete with other states to win a six-billion-dollar federal project.

shepherding visits.....were they?

we have friends who say that they have had some awful shepherdings,the things theyve been told in them were far from encouraging.. we havent ever had one so to be honest i cant comment...but would love to know if you had one?

were they regular and were they ever encouraging?

I remember one about 3 years ago that was really nice. I remember they focussed on not letting our own imperfections get us down emotionally. The elder was truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

But other than that one, the rest were not very encouraging. Some were just boring, most were just there to beat you over the head with guilt.
