Not too relevant, but.... Reacting to StAnn's bizarre attempt to place this sort of problem at the feet of so-called 'liberal' elements. "Liberals" would have insisted that person be treated, INCLUDING mandatory birth control... Zid

"liberal laws that were concerned with their "rights" completely ignored their inability to care for themselves"
Ah, yes, it was those 'liberals' who tried to prevent accurate information about birth control from getting to the children in school who desperately need it. It was those nasty 'liberals' who have the idiotic idea that "abstinence" is something that will work for children under extreme peer pressure and the stresses of burgeoning hormones and reproductive urges, and force the children to go without information that could save their lives and, incidentally, prevent conception; like "USE ConDoms!"
StAnn, it's the fundamentalist religious right faction here in the U.S. that has severely limited and attempted to completely eradicate open, free access to accurate birth control information and methods for teenagers and even young children. They have aggressively schemed to cut off funding for Third-World birth control programs. They are attempting to completely eradicate not only abortion (which I don't like but will not forbid others from this technique), but many other forms of birth control as well, especiallycutting fundingfor lower-income women! As a result of elimination of the Third-World birth control programs, now these countries are overwhelmed with people, ones they haven't the resources to fully care for.
In addition, these same countries, due to the desperation of their citizens, have been instrumental in taking away American jobs. The fabric industry that used to be well-established in the American South, now is largely located overseas. The shoe-making industries are now in Brazil, Sri Lanka, India, and China. China has commendably tried to limit its population growth, but have run smack up against the antiquated attitudes and traditions of the male-dominated aspects of ancient Chinese culture. Need I state the obvious - there is a strong parallel between the ignorant behavior of certain ones in China and the idiots in this country who worship a Middle Eastern god and imitate the behavior of Middle Eastern men!!
The rigidly unyielding mentality of the extreme Middle-Eastern-god-worshipping religious right in this country deny the reality that children today (in fact, all down thru history) have been sexually active from a rather early age. But, it's in our genes, too.
In pre-history, most humans rarely lived past their twenties. Some who were tougher, or perhaps luckier, lived into their 30's or 40's. However, at that time period, women had much shorter lives than men - more accurately, girls had much shorter life spans than boys - therefore, in order for the species to survive at all, the girls had to start reproducing very soon after they began menstruating. That's one of the reasons there's so much superstitious propaganda surrounding menstruation and a girl's first menstrual period...
"liberal" laws preventing proper access to birth control - don't make me laugh!! Zid

Did anyone see "Earth without people"?
by hubert init was on the history channel tuesday night.. if you kept in mind the j.w.
theory of a "paradise earth", you'd see it would be absolutely impossible for 6 or 7 , even 20 million people to "maintain" the earth to keep it in liveable condition, never mind a "paradise earth".. all that time i was watching it, i was hoping my daughter and son-in-law was looking at it, too.
i wanted to call them and tell them about it, but i am not allowed to "talk about anything that has a religious agenda" for fear of losing them.. did anyone else see it?.

Actually, I thought that the "instant" disappearance of people was a sly reference to the "Rapture", and how the planet would breathe a sigh of relief after all those self-righteous a**holes vanished!! Zid

A Couple of New Blogs....
by AllTimeJeff ini am very much in favor of being truthful and honest about jehovahs witnesses.
and that is why i want to be on the record to say that, in general, most of the jws i knew were really nice people.
i had many friends.

Wow, Jeff, I wasn't sure where you were going with that first one, but I like where it went! I especially like the second blog - "Jehovah's Witnesses - Championing Implication" Dead on!! I was attempting to pin that elusive practice down in my post "Deepest Symathies to ex-JWs" but you nailed it!
It would be great if you (since you're very familiar with this technique) would post something weekly - or monthly - about the latest 'implication' of the WTBTS. I could see that behavior of the WTBTS at some level of my mind, but couldn't pin down exactly what was being done to me - and the others.
Great blogs, Jeff! I had to look closely to realize - is that you in the pix?? You DO look a lot like Stephen Colbert!! Zid

If he [african GB member] really is from Africa, there's a very ancient tradition of storytelling in the cultures. Think Paul Bunyan in Minnesota, and you'll get the idea. As to his posts, I observe that there is, at the very least, a great deal of ambivilance about the WTBTS... Zid

Hmmm. I went online looking for confirmation of this story and (as usual) got distracted by this site: http://www.progressiveu.org/120636-why-i-know-jehovahs-witness-are-insane
The author of the above-mentioned site brings up some VERY interesting points, as follows:
"Shunning is a Drug...
...and drug users need enablers. I've noticed a few things about abusers of people and things. A person who abuses other humans does it for a reason... The addict gets something out of it, a "reward."...Addicts need a drug , abusers need a victim. Shunners are playing a mind game and they need a playmate who will follow the rules. Shunning is their drug. Abusers need help to carry out their abuse. They need enablers (victims). Without their victims they can not continue to abuse. Watchtower rules for shunning must be followed by both shunner and VICTIM or shunning doesn't work! Shunning is a show. To best work it needs an arena to be played in, and an audience."
I love the points she made! She goes on to state: "If my happiness is contingent on my son, daughter, mother, father, brother, sister, or other special person leaving the Watchtower organization then I have put a pretty cheap price on my happiness. If I have to wait to have a good life until other people, places, or things change then I'm no better off than the members of the Watchtower and I could just as well be back under the "official" control and influence of the group.
I used to confuse relatives with friends. I used to confuse people who were once willing and able to meet my needs with people who can meet my needs today. I used to confuse cult members with real people."
Then she makes a crucial, pro-active choice about her actions: "Remember too, I, as a former member, can talk to anybody. I can certainly talk to them. The current members are the ones being punished. THEY are the ones who can't talk to me, or read anything critical of the WT, or even read a book written by a former member, by order of their leaders."
Just thought I'd share this... Zid

BTW, my life has also been graced with doggies - if I could post pix, I'd put up pix of my German Shepherd/Bull Mastiff mix with his snowsuit on - I made a complete wardrobe for the bald brat - we lived in Montana at the time, and he was VERY short-haired, so he had a snowsuit, a coat, a Harley (tm) jacket, and his own (house-level insulated) doghouse. Brat could drag both my husband and I (combined weight of over 300 pounds) at the end of his leash, if he so chose...
Then there's Sheeba! She's my little baby; a German Shepherd/Border Collie/Blue Heeler/Dalmation/Dingo mix (we think)... She has gone with us on our vacations for the last 4-5 years, and her absolutely most favorite spot in the world is the 75-foot-high waterfall and pool on Lower Calf Creek Falls in Escalant'e, Utah - If ONLY I could post photos! - she is about 14 now, and we don't know how many more times she'll be able to make that 12-mile-hike, but at least it's an easy one...
So, I love doggies too! And hamsters, and raccoons - rescued one whose entire family had been hit by a car... And deer, and coyotes, and foxes, and so on... Zid

"Zid, how in the world do you stand it?" Squirt bottles, Snowbird. Lots and lots of them. All over the house within easy reach. Also a "time-out" box - a cat carrier, with a kitchen timer nearby. Small infractions earn 10-15 minutes; big ones earn up to half-of-an-hour... Then there's always the (finished and heated) basement, with litter box, water and food but nothing else available to destroy.
"My cat is a rescued cat. He was almost dead from starvation when I got him two years ago. Now he thinks he owns this house and he just lets me live here. Sometimes he even lets me sleep in my bed all by myself." Yeah, StAnn! Awww, poor little kitty! So glad he's got a good home with you, now! My "poor little old" calico is so spoiled she gets most of the bed when I retreat there from my husband's snoring (guest bedroom, spare bed...) My little black one was also almost starved to death when I responded to an acquaintance's call about her and drove 30 miles to pick her up... She's a little black 'bowling ball' now!
Yes, numerous rescues here, too, AnnOMaley! Such a wonderful feeling to provide safety and shelter for some poor lost and/or abused animals. So sad to see them finally go, too, but then there's room for another one who needs you - always pulls me out of my sadness when I have to say 'goodbye' to one of my beloved little rescues... Zid

My deepest condolences to you, your family, and your (2nd) cousin's family...
About depression and suicide amongst the Jehovah's Witnesses - I agree with Billy the X, JustWantTruth, and others - My father (who remains a JW to this day) has been so deeply depressed while a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses that he has had to be hospitalized and treated with electro-shock therapy - three times during the time I was still in contact with the family.
My brother (also a staunch Witness) has also been so deeply depressed that he was hospitalized and put on suicide watch - especially after he accidentally ran over a drunk lying in the road and killed him...
My mother hasn't displayed any strong indicators of clinical depression but has been addicted to uppers and downers (as diet pills and relaxants) all during her adult life - again, all the time she's been a good, practicing Jehovah's Witness.
I personally experienced such deep depression during my time as a Jehovah's Witness that I reached the point of considering suicide - that's when I knew I had to get out. Since I have left, I have not experienced severe depression again - ever!!
I ran an informal survey amongst the ex-Jehovah's Witnesses' support group I'm a member of, and everysingleoneofushadeitherconsideredsuicideorhadattempteditwhilestillabelievingmemberofthereligion!!!
Getting accurate figures of suicide amongst Jehovah's Witnesses is impossiblebecause of the paranoid secrecy shrouding the Watchtower Society.
Which, in itself, constitutes a public hazard, in my opinion... Zid

Oh, Crap! I thought this was going to be a thread about the wonderful properties of hemp....
And No! I'm not talking about smoking it!! If anyone ever tries to smoke my hemp rope, hemp twine, hemp fabric (80% hemp, 20% Yaks' Wool), or hemp/recycled tire rubber hiking boots, I'm gonna CRACK their knuckles!! Or skull! Zid
