It's Smurftastic!!!
by Yizuman insource: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/5484560/world-record-for-most-people-dressed-as-smurfs-in-swansea.html.
world record for most people dressed as smurfs in swanseathe world record for the largest number of people dressed as smurfs has been smashed in swansea.
published: 11:15am bst 09 jun 2009. the city of swansea was turned blue as a group of 2,510 people crammed into the oceana nightclubphoto: swnsthe welsh city was turned blue as a group of 2,510 people, the majority of whom were students from the local university, crammed into the oceana nightclub to almost double the previous record.. the event was organised by uk fancy dress costume seller jokers' masquerade and was not verified until 1am as every "smurf" had to be checked to make sure no natural skin was showing.. the record was previously held by the town of castleblayney in county monaghan, ireland, which recorded 1,253 smurfs gathered in the high street last year.. rebecca oatley, of jokers' masquerade, said: "smurf guinness world record holder has become an illustrious title.. "there have been five attempts over the last 18 months, with swansea trumping castleblayney's 1,253 smurfs recorded last year.. "we knew that if we were going to break the record, we had to do it in style and 2,510 smurfs will be a tough act to follow for any budding record-breakers.".

Did you like 80's music?
by John Doe ini was unaware that don johnson was a singer.
i came across this, and couldn't help laughing.
there was certainly a lot of emotion in this genre, but this is intense enough to border on comedy.

As with each decade, there are songs I love and songs I don't. Here's a classic (don't think they did a video for it):
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - "Against The Wind":

by Duncan in(i posted this a couple of weeks ago, but forgot to put a title - it sank without trace.
forgive the repeat).
there will be a lot of moon landing stuff in the press and media in the next couple of months - its 40 years since that first small step the anniversary is on july 20th.. so, like ive done in the past (for example this post regarding the transit of venus in 2004, which i posted 3 months early), i thought i would get my 40th anniversary post in before anyone else.. this is it, then: the apollo moon landing- the part i played in the whole thing.

... “this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” John F. Kennedy - May 21, 1961

I believe anything is possible. And each New Day gets us closer to accomplishing that which we thought, yesterday, was impossible.
Thanks, Duncan!

Being a JW is like......
by LouBelle insitting down to whatever is dished up in front of you and eating it.
it requires very little brain power or imagination.
you just shovel in the food, burp, pat your tummy and no matter what it is you've eaten think it's a great meal.. being a free thinker is like a chef, the one who gets to construct the meal, thought is required, knowledge of what works together is required, a desire to cook the meal, imaginiation.. .

Even I, a non-JW, sometimes have feelings of dread speaking to them because I am informed about who they are. Ignorance is bliss sometimes, isn't it? It is also dangerous.
I am conflicted with how much I should let fly versus being a loving person. I usually take a deep breath and choose the latter. I think a big part of the problem is the following:
You KNOW what their agenda is and it's not loving.
You KNOW they aren't honest with you from the get-go.
You KNOW they're a cult trying to recruit you.
You KNOW that any rational argument given to them isn't going to be heard.
You KNOW there are enormous problems within the organization that they're all trying to ignore.
You KNOW they can be harassing, especially when they meet up with an ex/inactive JW or when they are confronted with information that disagrees with their beliefs. They don't like being challenged on what they are saying and they don't like being proven wrong because this causes enormous conflict within them.
It all makes for a situation you'd rather avoid than have to deal with. This is why I say what I do. I make it known right off that I know who they are. I don't think they expect that. Then I give them my own real life example(s) of how being a JW didn't help someone I loved very deeply (and actually caused a lot of their issues in life). I don't think they know how to handle that stuff.

Did You Personally Believe "The End" Was Going To Come In Your Lifetime?
by minimus inhonestly, i never believed in the chronology.
"no man knows the day or the hour" was pretty clear to me..

I sure did! My mother told me I would see it in my lifetime. When you're little, your parents are omnipotent -- they know EVERYTHING!
But as we get older and we grow up, we come to realize the realities of life.... that our parents are NOT omnipotent -- that they are human and not perfect (gasp!). We realize that we've been told big lies... Santa Claus isn't real, neither is the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny... and that people don't practice what they preach (including your parents).
I believe that life is the journey of all of us learning about and moving from an expectation of perfection into the realization and truth of love, tolerance, and understanding.

The young ones are leaving in droves!!!
by 1914BS ini hear that many congos are loosing all their young dubs and now only very old dubs are left.
it seems the jws religion is dying out because there are no youngins to replace the aging ms/elder/cos .
the young dubs are very internet savy and would rather play warcraft than go out in the field circus.. i remember a wt study article a couple of years ago that was entitled" when a young person rebels" or something like that - anyone know that mag?.

My father told me that their CO said the same thing... and this is why they believe Armageddon is coming soon.

I usually tell them that I get the magazines from my father as he is a Witness. Then I launch into a story about how my baptized mother smoked herself into the grave and I just didn't understand how she could do that as a JW. They usually leave after that... without leaving the magazines.
