Being Poor is A Crime
by sammielee24 inguilty of being poorby eric ruder / april 23rd, 2009. the jailers of the 19th century even in the pre-civil war south largely abandoned the practice of imprisoning people for falling into debt as counterproductive and ultimately barbaric.
in the 1970s and 80s, the u.s. supreme court affirmed that incarcerating people who cant pay fines because of poverty violates the u.s. constitution.. apparently, though, some states and county jails never got the memo.
welcome to the debtors prisons of the 21st century.. edwina nowlin, a poor michigan resident, was ordered to reimburse a juvenile detention center $104 a month for holding her 16-year-old son, the new york times wrote in an editorial.. when she explained to the court that she could not afford to pay, ms. nowlin was sent to prison.

This is one I will just not be able to attend. No way. I decided when I saw the article three months ago.
DITTO! Not that I saw the article or would have even considered going in the first place (not now). Uuuuuhhhh.... I have to .... uh... rotate the tires on my jeep.
Besides, I'd rather "Follow the Lamb" (the true lamb of God Jesus Christ ) with you guys than the WTS ANY day.

I've been living in my current house for about 2.5 years now and I've had them at the door once where I was home and spoke with them. The only other time that I know of was the day before the 2009 Memorial where they left the invitation pamphlet in my door. I felt that was a little short notice. (Sorry... I .. uh... gotta wash my hair)
Not to worry though as I get the magazines from my father. I like to critique some of the articles. One such article is the June 1, 2008 Watchtower, p 18, "Make Good Use of Your Curiosity". They seem to have a formula where they start out with such a wonderful positive tone but by the end of the 2nd paragraph have slid into quite the opposite.
So I read on, and then I get to it. The paragraph that kills it for me! And I quote:
"Then there is knowledge that may not be harmful in itself but is actually frivolous and unnecessary. For example, what benefit is there in knowing all about the private life of movie stars or celebrities, in learning the statistics of every sports team and player, or in knowing all about the latest gadgets or the newest models of cars? For most people, being "experts" in thes subjects does not lead to anything beneficial."
Say What? What constitutes frivolous and unnecessary knowledge? Define this. What may be frivilous and unnecessary to the author may actually be vital to me. And the wild conclusion in the 5th paragraph .... 'being "experts" in these subjects does not lead to anything beneficial.' Prove it. This paragraph is completely the opinion of the author ... there is no Scriptural reference (or any other for that matter) to back up this claim. At that point I couldn't take anymore and I put it down.
They are dumbing down their people. And they are trying to control people's minds. Every non-JW I have read that to agrees with me.

My father is a Ministerial Servant and he told me I should have nothing to do with my ex-husband. A death in our family had occurred and we had been talking about life and family. In a quiet voice I said to him...
"Dad. That's not what Jesus teaches in the Bible."
He put his head down and I'm not sure why. I couldn't really see his face, especially his eyes, so I wasn't sure if he was angry or sad. The day was a sad one so maybe that was it.
I then said to him "If I had stayed away from him, I couldn't show him how I am trying to apply Christ's teachings in my own life. We have talked a lot about the Bible. And we've had better communications. He is seeing things more clearly now and he is trying to apply the same things."
He didn't say anything.

Should I renew my Norton subscription?
by frozen one inmy norton security sub exprires in a couple of weeks.
i've heard a lot of negatives about norton mostly about the resources norton gobbles up which slows down everything else.
my computer does seem to be be a bit pokey at times.

I don't use any and haven't for years
Simon... I would be interested in understanding how you stay protected. Some platforms have built in security, however, this may not hold true for others so while you say you don't use any, people may assume they don't need to either. This is dangerous. Excellent point about staying patched! (be aware that MS Windows XP Service Pack3 has caused people issues. We're still SP2 at work because of it!)
frozen one.... As part of my profession, I perform a Security Co-ordination and Administration role. I suggest you do some homework on other or alternative security products if you are not satisfied with Norton. They aren't the only game in town. Going out to the Internet without security is like having sex with no condom. You're going to get infected -- it's just a question of time. With the Internet, it's usually seconds.
At work we use Symantec's Firewall and AntiVirus (Corporate editions). Symantec is owned by Norton.
Regarding your "pokey at times computer", that could be a multitude of things including:
- massive numbers of temp files accumulating on your harddrive that need to be cleaned off
- fragmentation of the files on your harddrive
- 'spybots' (like roings, Trojans etc.) running that you don't even know about.
If you haven't done it for a while, start by defragging your harddrive.

RAY FRANZ TODAY
by Scott77 inits has been almost two decades if i am correct since ray franz released the heartbreaking books: "crisis of conscience" and "in search of christian freedom".
since then, many of us have been released from bondage of the wts and set free.
by the way, where is ray franz today, what is he doing?

I send a big heartfelt to Ray Franz! I have never met him but he has had enormous impact on my life.
My parents warned me not to read 'apostate materials'. Over the last few years I have wanted to get back in touch with my Spirituality. I had been neglecting it for years thanks to a lot of conflict within myself about the WTS and it's effects on my family. I was seriously considering studying with the Witnesses again but had screaming doubts. So I said to myself "Do your research. Use the internet." With trepidation I ventured into 'apostate land'. OMG! I watched YouTube videos, particularly Rick Fearon's disfellowshipping, Lee Marsh's video on what defines a cult, and the video of Ray Franz in Prague. None of these people struck me as being 'aspostate'. I started reading website information including Barbara Anderson's, Danny Hazard's, and Gary Busselman's experiences -- and many, many others. I was physically drained!
I purchased both of Ray Franz's books "Crisis of Conscience" and "In Search of Christian Freedom". I felt that the purchase of his books was, in some way, helping to support Ray financially. What better way to say UP YOURS, WTS! than to help support an 'apostate'. I finished Crisis of Conscience fairly quickly and was left with an enormous emotional melting pot of anger, sadness, relief, depression, concern, and empathy. I am currently working on ISoCF.
THANK YOU so much to all of you who have had the courage to break the chains of bondage with the man made WTS which has no basis in truth or love. Heaven

Curing Cancer With Baking Soda
by Tired of the Hypocrisy inhey gang, i got a link from a buddy of mine on how cancer can be fought off with baking soda.
i read the article and while i can't prove or disprove the claims, it seems like some reasonable information and it sure can't hurt to try it.
thought i'd share it with you all.. http://www.bamboo-delight.com/download/cure_cancer_with_baking_soda.htm.

while I can't prove or disprove the claims
Tired... please be careful! Anyone making such a claim owns the responsibility of "the burden of proof". By your very statement above, this says that there is no proof or you did not ask for the research supporting this and therefore you cannot take the CLAIM seriously. This is a fundamental issue I found within the WTS doctrines.
1 Thessalonians 5:21: Prove all things; hold fast to that which is good. (KJV)
If you wish to take some sort of health tonic, I would strongly recommend consulting your doctor first. Some combinations of 'health' foods in conjunction with certain conditions (eg. pregnancy) or certain prescription medications can cause harmful reactions or can nullify the effects of the medication. In addition, if you decide to spend your hard earned dollars on a 'cure' that does nothing or even harms you, you have just wasted that money.
Before jumping on any bandwagon or recommending others do the same, do your research first. We have libraries and the Internet so there is no reason this cannot be done. Heaven

How Do I Discover Myself And Build My Self-Esteem After Realizing The Truth About 'the truth'?
by african GB Member insome of those of us who are still in find it difficult to get on with our lives after discovering the wt lies.
we keep going to the meetings for family.
sitting there for hours affects one psychologically, especially when those in good standing boast about the new system, how bad people will be destroyed, and how good they are in the eyes of jehovah.

AGBM... thank you for asking this question. I suggest you start with creating your Personal Mission Statement. There is plenty of info on the Internet so just Google 'Personal Mission Statement'. The statement should be simple and to the point but outline things like your values and what you wish to accomplish in life.
Here is one to give you an example:
Gandhi’s Personal Mission Statement
'Let the first act of every morning be to make the following resolve for the day:
I shall not fear anyone on earth.
I shall fear only God.
I shall not bear ill toward anyone.
I shall not submit to injustice from anyone.
I shall conquer untruth by truth.
And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering'
* Mahatma Gandhi.Gandhi's mission statement clearly highlights his beliefs and who he was as an individual. It had a specified time frame and undoubtedly states actions that he was willing to take to change the course of his life and the lives of others.
Gandhi's personal statement addressed three of the most important points required to write a career or personal mission statement.
- Purpose
- Values
- Actions
Gandhi's mission statement not only changed his life and the lives of everybody that met him, it propelled him into the history books.
To the Moderators: I haven't been here long but I get a sense that what is required here are some Mentors for people like AGBM. If we truly wish to help people free themselves, I think a Mentoring Program is in order. We have formal and informal programs at work. For example, the informal program is put into practice when a new person joins the company or moves to a new department. An experienced 'Buddy' is assigned to help show the person the ropes, explain how things are done, train the person in their job, and help them get the resources they need to succeed.
Comments? ...... Heaven
