Their word for circle, Chuwg, is the one he used in chapter 40. In the bible, this always refers to a circle as scribed with a compass - a flat disk. The bible is consistent in it's representation of the earth as flat.

It really comes down to that. Many bible passages reveal that the bible writers thought the earth was flat, had limits or ends, and some of the bible writers had conflicting ideas about whether the earth had "foundations" or whether it "hung upon nothing". In this instance, there is a perfectly good Hebrew word for "ball" or sphere - if that was what the bible writer wanted to convey, he would have used that rather than "circle", or flat disk.
This was the impression the bible writers had, and thus the impression the early church had, which is why they opposed round-earth heresy so vehemently - it directly contradicts the biblical account.

If you believe the Earth is round, rather than flat (as stated in Scripture), does this make you a 'Liberal' Christian?
It would appear to be relative to the time period you lived in.
For instance, what was considered rebellious by our parents and grandparents would now be considered quaint and conservative.

Well, it can't be denied that such a rigid attachment to biblical literalism, even in just the examples I mentioned, has served as a hindrance to the progress of humanity.
So if progressive Christianity is moving away from that sort of literalism, I don't see how that can be considered a bad thing.
Honestly, in 10 or 20 years we will consider conservative Christianity's claims that evolution is heretical just as silly as looking back and seeing the Church imprison scientists for daring to suggest that the earth was not the center of the universe.

Yeah, I am aware that a large amount of liberal Christians have adopted the evolution theory. Since I believe totally and completely in the Bible, I don't agree with them. I support the arguments for a young earth, and think they have a valid argument. I think alot has seeped into modern Christianity today that should not have. The emergent church really seems to be going off on a very unbiblical course.
Throughout history, the Church has said similar things about scientific concepts like heliocentricism, round earth and gravity. I, for one, am glad that Christianity is moving away from that sort of rigid attachment to their perception of ancient writings.

Also, we do not have to go back very far to see the WT claim inspiration and prophetic powers. They still claim it today. Yes, they say "We are not inspired", but then they say "We are not speaking mens words. We are speaking Jehovah's Words."

many people have contacted me about the recent claims by a group called noahs ark ministries international.1 the evangelical organization claims to have discovered noahs ark.2 i have responded on several occasions to these dubious claims on my blog.3 and still, this group has stood behind their claim,4 insisting that what they have found is real based largely on the belief that because the bible says the flood and the ark are historical, it must be so.
so, instead of addressing their spurious claims yet again, i thought i would approach the issue from a different angle: forget about noahs ark; there was no world-wide flood.. the worldwide flood described in genesis 6-9 is not historical, but rather a combination of at least two flood stories, both of which descended from earlier mesopotamian flood narratives.
