  i've been called a "fundi" many times in my discussions with people on the board, and i'd like to know what your definition is of a "fundi".

  don't google it.

  i just want to hear your personal definition.. i find it interesting because i don't go to any church.

  As far as I am concerned, whatever it is that these kinds of people on this board claim has been revealed to them is valid for them alone. I do not have to accept it as true in any way, and I often do not. Private revelation, if it is even revelation, is binding on no one but on whom it is revealed. In this, it seems that I am in agreement with you.

  As for the rest, YES !!!

  We are expressing out own opinion, just liek you are and everyone else here.

  Just like the Apostles did and the chruch fathers did and scholars and writers have done and are still doing TODAY.

  Do you believe God communicates with his followers via prayer?

  I think I read earlier in this thread and others various instances of a believer saying "Yes I was confused about such and such, but I prayed about it and God revealed to me so and so...you should do the same."

  That is where it no longer becomes just your opinion on a matter. You've asserted an absolute - that God discussed a topic with you. Therefore there are only a few options if another believer comes along, claims that they also talked with God about that topic, however they received an entirely different answer.

  1. You are full of it.

  2. They are full of it.

  3. You're both full of it.

  4. God is screwing with you.

  Maybe there are a few other conclusions, I dunno.

  Let me ask you guys soemthing, when you come acorss and issue in the bible, what do you do?

  The same thing I do when I find a plot hole in any work of fiction. Try to move on and just enjoy the story.

  just kidding, I don't read the bible anymore. I already know how it ends.

  I am sure that if you ask a JW or a fundi that they wil be able to tell you EXACTLY what you want to hear.

  And now you have a partial understanding of why some do become fundmentalists, because they WANT the answers GIVIN to them in a noce, neat package without doubts and issues and conflict and most of all, any owrk on THEIR part.

  It has nothing to do with wanting prepackaged answers, it has to do with the intellectual dishonesty of a group of people who all claim to know and be worshipping and actively communicating with the same Deity being unable to reach an agreement about almost anything. When you discuss how that deity feels about "Topic X" or what the deity in Holy Book Y says about Topic Z and receive an infinite number of different answers it becomes clear that NONE of them are actually communicating with this entity, they are all merely expressing their own opinion. Which is fine if they would merely present it as "Stuff we are making up as we go" rather than theology or doctrine.

  You mean like some of the posters on this here thread?

  Well that's a little vague.

  In any case I feel you may be mistaking plain and pointed speech for arrogance and egostistical closed-mindedness. Trying to discuss theology with amorphous Christianity is frustrating, because the second you feel you've developed a reasonable argument they change their doctrine and pretend that's what they always believed. Therefore you can see that frustration come out in some people's blunt responses.

  In any case I don't feel anyone in this thread has been rude, egotistical or arrogant.

  @leavingwt - I pretty much agree. I think everyone can see where it's going and none of us like it.

  @ minimus - Sopranos was pretty good. IMO The Wire blows it out of the water. Best plot, best characters, best acting I have ever seen in a tv drama. Just amazing.

  I assume by the way you just vented that it frustrates you that you can't "pigeon hole' all christians into fundis because that would certainly make things easier for you and I can appreciate that.

  In discussions where specific things are brought up, absolutely. It would be nice if you could all actually agree about anything with regards to your amorphous faith. Instead, if a freethinker brings up a problem with a scriptural or theological idea, they first have to wade through an infinite number of different interpretations by different Christians (who claim to have all prayed to Jesus to enlighten them on this particular topic, and - BIG SURPRISE - Jesus told them all different things) before they can even begin to address what has now become a completely different issue.

  Frustrating? You betcha. It makes us suspect you're all just making it up as you go along.

  I am finishing my second year of a university degree in Theology

  My wife has just got me hooked on Damages. I am Netflixing the hell out of that show.

  I like basically everything on NBC on Thursday. Community, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock....The Office used to be so awesome but I think they are running out of ideas.

  It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is magnificent. So the The League. All of these are on Thursday night so I get all my TV watching out of the way all at once, lol.

  But the absolute Number 1 out there right now is.......drumroll.......

  That outlook is also what keeps us "cherry pickers" from being close minded, intolerant, egotistical, arrogant and also free of cults like the JW's.

  Maybe you shouldn't look down on it.

  Just saying. ;)

  On the one hand it's admirable because you're good people who are basically atheists who have invented your own church for your own selves and still want to believe in sweet baby Jesus. Which is totally cool. On the other hand it makes you impossible to talk with on things like theology, because your theology is an amorphous blob of things you've cherry-picked to believe because they make you feel good. When a topic about Christian dogma comes up and freethinkers find themselves alternately discussing with the Church of PSac, the Church of Perry, the Church of BTS, the Church of Tammy (none of which can agree on even the most basic of doctrines), they feel like they're trying to nail down a piece of silly putty.
