I fired a warning shot against my assailant and it got me 4 1 / 2 months in jail.
Just out of curiosity, did you shot 'at him' (make contact), or just at the ground? Wouldn't surprise me either way...

i am looking into getting myself a pellet pistol.
my reason for a pellet is it will not kill anyone but sting them pretty good.
we have been getting some undesirable's and they have been breaking in to my neighbors places.

i realize whether you believe in god or the non-existence of god it has to be taken on faith since both positions are unknowable and unprovable.
however, i can understand faith in god as basically a hope for something better.
i can also understand agnosticism; admitting it's unknowable but still leaving the door open (perhaps the only intellectually honest option).
To me agnosticism is disbelief. Atheism seems to be faith in something unknowable.
Theism addresses the issue of belief. For any claim asserting the existence of a god, a theist is an individual who accepts (or positively believes) that the claim is true and an atheist (literally, "one without theism") is someone who does not.
Gnosticism (in the general sense being discussed here) addresses the issue of what one knows or claims to know. For any claim regarding the existence of a god, a gnostic is an individual who claims knowledge that the assertion is true and an agnostic (literally, "one who lacks knowledge") is someone who makes no such claim.
Agnostic | Gnostic | |
---|---|---|
Atheist | 1. Agnostic atheist
| 2. Gnostic atheist

Theist | 3. Agnostic theist
| 4. Gnostic theist

I'm not worried, I'm just wondering. Since we're just "choosing" these unprovable beliefs, why not just choose a belief that there is the possibility of a greater consciousness and perhaps there is something good in store?
There are repercussions caused by all beliefs as well.
What if you believe the rapture or armegeddon is going to be here in the next 20 years (sound familiar?). In that case.. global warming, world peace, etc - there is no point in pursuing soulutions to any of mankind's problems. Why take responsibility for our actions here on earth, when god is scheduled to clean up our mess anyway?
So when time just keeps ticking on (like it always has), and God doesn't show up to clean up our mess... the price to pay for that "hope that something good is in store" just keeps climing higher and higher.

What I can't understand is faith in atheism. What's the upside?
What is the upside for you not to believe in paganism? What is the upside for you not to believe in hinduism? Waht is the upside for you not to believe in the prophet Muhammad, scientology doctrine, mormon doctrine, etc., etc., etc.?
What is the upside? Why don't you believe in all of those things? Why don't you believe in faries? Or in monsters under your bed? Why don't you believe in gnomes?
Obviously, if something is not real then there is no benefit in believing in it - and belief in things that are not real prevent us from comming to an accurate understanding of our universe.
If you believe that gnomes stole your car keys in the night, then you won't go looking for them, and you'll never find them. Compare that with fundamentalists christians that continue to deny evolution in spite of over 200 years of mounting evidence, and a resounding defeat at the Dover trial. (And the theory of evolution has nothing to say about the existance of God. Mearly how life becamse diverse. It is the fundamentalists' belief that causes them to interpret the theory as an attack against god.)
The upside of atheism (by which I mean agnostic atheists) is a slate by which we can accurately study the world in an unbiased manner.

it was the "in-thing" to happen to sinners in jesus' time, being possessed.
some could boast they had legions of demons calling their body home.. it was also a primary miracle for the top christians to perform, ridding demons away, proof you had god's spirit.
"be gone you demon!!".
My mom claims to have been posessed by one for several seconds while using a Ouaji board with her teenage friends. She "saw a shadow move across the room, enter her, and could feel it's evil."
But it had nothing to do with the fact they were also experimenting with drugs that night and trying to freak eachother out. She 'had not taken that much yet'.

As far as using something so powerful, it says not to kill, it doesn't say anything about blowing someone's kneecaps off.
Be careful with this - talking to some police in Colorado, they will warn that in court firearms involved in self-defense can often become an all-or-nothing event. The courts can rule that if an attacker wasn't a big enough of a threat for you to kill them, then they weren't enough of a threat for you to fire at them at all (if you don't intend to kill with a shot, fire a warning shot that misses entirely, and if that doesn't stop them, and it's you-or-them - it's shoot to kill.)
Police also warn that if you're going to produce a weapon, you best be prepared to kill with it immediately. The 'fight or flight' instinct will be triggered in your attackers, and things can happen very fast (some may run, some may attack, sometimes additional weapons are produced).
A gun is a frightning weapon... but it's no guarantee that someone will automaticlly leave.

For about the same price you can get a do-it-yourself wireless home alarm system - they come with several door/window sensors, a motion sensor, a central unit, and a couple keychain remotes to arm/disarm the system.
That coupled with perhaps a small can as a last resort.. but most people won't stick around if an alarm is going off, and that way you don't have to worry about escalating violence (you pull out a pellet gun only to find out one of them has a real one.)

as a christian, i would like to apologize for the stupid and insensitive remarks made by pat robertson.
instead of throwing stones from his ivory tower in virginia, he should have taken a que from the one he claims to follow who when asked about the murders of galileans making their sacrifices by pilate said, "do you think that these galileans were worse sinners than all the other galileans because they suffered this way?
but unless you repent, you too will all perish.
The second of Jesus's 'greatest commandments' was to love your neighbor as yourself - which is certainly a good thing.
I don't care what some BS TV figure spews, regardless of what side he claims to be on (unfortunately, most people do care, and embrace.) There are liberals that spew the very finger-pointing, hateful crap that I find disgusting. It never helps the side the fingers aren't pointing at - it just inferiorates the other side for having their mistakes magnififed, and the good works they do ignored.
I care about actions and solutions. Shit happens. If Chrisitians do their best to contribute and help the people of Haiti, not just in prayer, but with actions and THEN with prayer and best wishes,
Who can find fault with that?

http://e-watchman.com/.
"at this late hour millions of jehovahs witnesses have already been stumbled, including people once associated with jehovahs witnesses such as family or relatives of jehovahs witnesses, and there are those many millions who have partaken of a bible study with jehovahs witnesses but who did not commit to become jehovahs witnesses, who are now increasingly, often rabidly, hostile to the watchtower organization.
those legions of stumbled individuals, united through dozens of internet discussion boards and so-called "recovery" groups, are now unwittingly primed to do an evil work during the hour of darkness soon to engulf this wicked world.
So, in other words, the JW Apostate Alert Level has been raised to 4. ORANGE - "Heightened Apostate Activity".

i'm looking into voice recognition software.
has anyone here tried any.
the only one i've heard of is dragon software.
I can understand why it would need a quiet setting but I don't have much time and patience. I wonder if the newer versions are more efficient?
I bet realistically it's about the same (maybe a tad better thanks to faster processor speed and some marginal improvements). A lot seems to depend on your voice. I don't have a strong accent, so it could take dication from me at a normal speaking pace (Dragon uses some grammatical analysis to figure out words you said.. so it'll get it wrong initially, but as you complete the sentence it may correct itself.) It always requires some proof-reading, which frankly I think is done better in a second pass with the keyboard, rather than using the dumb voice commands while creating the draft. Usually you want to fix grammer and stuff afterwards anyway.
When I used it.. it tended to be a bit of a novelty - it could eventually get the job done, but not without some pain. In the end, I could still type things faster and with better accuracy, so unless the technology has vastly improved, or you really need to be hands-free, I wouldn't bother. (With a cordless headset, it might be nice if it could take notes/dictation while I pace around the room brainstorming or work on the whiteboard.)
The price does seem to be an issue now.. $200? I think it was about $80 when I got it (version 5 I think).
