Wow! She terrorised the local supermarket too! I guess she didn't like the food they were serving up either ...

Funny: Kingdom Hall gets restraining order against sixteen year old girl.
by JW News & Comments inthe scottish sun reports about about shauni chalk, a 16 year old girl from perth, who has been banned from attending the local kingdom hall of jehovahs witnesses in perth.
the girl was cited for anti-social behavior by the police after she hurled insults and harassed jehovahs witnesses at the kingdom hall during a three-month period, halting the meetings and becoming a general nuisance.

*** bumping ***
I attempted to get a copy of the new book from a JW woman. She was all eager to get me a copy but I guess over the weekend she spoke to some elders that advised her that she couldn't get a copy of the book for an "apostate". The elders suggested that we contact the Society directly and make the request ... I don't see that happening. (Well maybe if I enclose some cash.)
Would really love a scan of the new book on Acts ...

would you want to be part of any religion that changes the bible on purpose?...
by oompa in...and makes it say what they want it to in order to fit their doctrines???
nearly every jw and non would answer no!
i wish i had started off my last elder visit with that question.

I haven't met a Bible that hasn't been massaged to support some doctrine or another. I touched on this recently in a blog article. Excerpt below:
Opponents of the Jehovah’s Witnesses sometimes call them to the carpet for how their New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures renders John 1:1. Whereas most translations have some form of “and the Word was God” the Watchtower, to support their anti-Trinitarian theology, has translated this, “and the Word was a god.”
Pro-Trinitarians though have resorted to similar creative translating just a few verses down. Whereas the text says that Jesus was “the only-begotten Son” this presents some difficulty for a Trinitarian theology where Jesus is said to be co-eternal with the father. To be begotten implies a beginning, something that the Trinity denies for Jesus. To alleviate this doctrinal difficulty; modern translations have substituted “One and Only” and “the only one” in the place of “only begotten.” (Even the venerable King James Version is not immune to this kind of Scriptural tampering for it adds the Trinity formula at 1 John 5:7.)
Notice in both cases how the primacy of a doctrine alters the Scriptures. I have to ask, what then is more sacred, the doctrine of men or the written Word of God?

What is funny about the article is they never even established if this little menace actually was a Witness or not. The Sun article makes it seem like she just kind of randomly terrorized the local JW's for three months.
I wish my old elders could read this. They might not think I'm so bad in comparison ... ha

What did you do to piss the brothers off?
by Pleasuredome inwhen you were getting fed up with meetings before you gave up, was there anything you did to deliberately get on the brothers nerves?.
i turned up to a meeting once with jeans on, and a red top with cccp on it with the 'hammer and sickle'.
i also went to another bs group a few times so that if i wasnt at one group they'd think i was at the other and vice versa.

Wouldn't say "deliberately", but these things tended to irritate the elders for whatever reason --
- Not using the name "Jehovah" in prayer.
- Encouraging brothers and sisters, without have "authority".
- Speaking "too much" about Jesus.
- Attention to Christian giving and charity.
- Partaking at memorial.
- Welcoming disfellowshipped ones at meetings.
- Sending personal letters to brothers & sisters.

by Megachusen inmy head is still ringing from all the delicious spiritual food that i received today so i won't have my review up for at least another day or so.
suffice it to say that the dvd is extremely well designed(for the society, that is).
you can tell right away that they put a lot of money into cg planetoids.

Let's all write letters to Ciro Auliano
by BonaFide inif a lot of us write a letter to him, do you think that might wake him up?
i don't think one or two letters will work, but a lot?
that would be something, for him to wake up and then be expelled from bethel.. yay or nay?.

Seriously if I could go back and do it all over again I would bring JC charges against Ciro for his involvement with the UN. Curious how this would play out if someone ever did.

by TheOldHippie insince you have taken so much time in answering questions and commenting, i ask one more question:.

i know you have written about articles you have contributed to, and also that coc lists the authors of some of the books, but do you remember at least some authors of some books / brochures / special articles?.

Barbara,
I really find what you have presented in the various threads to be rather fascinating. I had questions that I would appreciate your thoughts on.
In your Bethel and Writing Dept. experience, how would you characterize how "new light" was developed and presented? Did this come exclusively from Governing Body members and "anointed" ones? Did this come as the result of Bible study or more as response to theological or organizational problems that developed over time? How comfortable would an average member of the Writing Dept have in presenting what they thought might be "new light"?
Was anyone in the Writing Dept. engaged in what the Society might characterize as "independent study", that is studying or reading the Bible outside the Organizational framework? Ray Franz comments that Bethel had a fully stocked library of various Bible commentaries, during your time in the Writing Dept. did you observe these were used much? Equally, how much would you characterize that the Watchtower indexes and other publications were used? For mere speculation, if the GB ordered that a commentary on the letters of Paul be developed for an upcoming District Convention, how would you guess that the Writing Dept. would write this book? Would they read the Bible and write down their thoughts? Would they consult "worldly" commentaries? Would they look up related passages in the Indexes and rewrite what the Society has published in the past?
How were ideas for articles developed? In looking at the CD-ROM it appears that some articles and themes come in cycles, would you say that Writing dept tends to recycle old articles for new WT's?
When you were in Writing Dept. could you give an estimate of staff size and then a rough guess of how many members were generational Witnesses verses those who came in from other religious backgrounds? How good would you consider the Writing Dept.'s knowledge of the Societies past teachings, such as those from the Rutherford-era or from Russell's Studies in the Scriptures? Was old literature ever read in research or study or did it tend to be more ornamental like in KH libraries?
I believe Ray Franz relates that his uncle Fred Franz was seen as somewhat as an "oracle" and was the final word on matters of JW theology. I read that you suspect that Fred Franz may have ghostwritten some of Rutherford's books and WT articles. With the death of Fred Franz did you observe that anyone at Bethel stepped up to fill his shoes in these areas -- that is, as theologian and Bible scholar, and ultimate authority in matters of JW doctrine?
Thanks very much,
Anthony
