Biggest lie/rumour? The completely unoriginal --
"He started his own religion."
most of us here know what a hypocritical, backstabbing bunch of gossips many of the jw's tend to be.
far too often, a jw wont tell you to your face what's eating them, but they'll sure tell others.
when i started waking up (the second time around) this made me very paranoid.

why is it that the story of the resurrection of lazarus of bethany only is mentioned in the book of john and not in the other three gospel accounts of the life of jesus?.
the resurrection of lazarus was a major event in the life of jesus, but three writers failed to mention it, why?.

PSacramento one of the interesting things about the GOJ is that it omits some of the more famous stories of the Zebedee brothers that the other gospels include. It also doesn't include some of the miraculous Galilean stories but instead has some unique Judean stories. Further it provides a more detailed looked at Jesus' dealings with the family of Lazarus in Bethany.
Certainly Jesus had affection for all of his apostles but there in only one disciple in GOJ that is he is specifically said to have loved and that is Lazarus. If you stripped the book of the title (which was added later) and just read through it you could come to no other conclusion that the disciple who Jesus loved was Lazarus.
i love psychedelic music.
some of my favorites include the beatles' "blue jay way", .
the beastie boys' "namaste",.
Strawberry Fields Forever with the faux Paul McCartney.
***13. in recent times there have been cases in which an elder happened to meet a disfellowshipped person.
where appropriate, the shepherd briefly outlined the steps to be taken for reinstatement.
some persons like this repented and were reinstated.
Honestly, the elders barely have time to act as shepherds for their own flock let alone chase after strays. No visit in four years for me and now that every member of that elder body is either deceased, removed, disfellowshipped, and disassociated I doubt I'll ever get a visit. A shame, because I would really like one.
well, it just happened.
two polite elderly ladies knocked on my door to share the good news of the kingdom with me.. i was pondering whether i should speak against the organization, but immediately knew it just would not work.
i thought i should say a polite but firm no.
Let's see; you had a coversation, accepted literature, and MADE A DONATION? Keep us posted on the sequel. Return visit incoming!
for a religious group that claims to be above reproach, with a self proclaimed, excellent reputation for godliness, i don't feel that claim is quite true.. in fact, i think its a sham to make those assertions.
they trully should not feel they are different from any organized group, when it comes to its members following righteous standards.
true, the wt would like all to believe they are clean and morally straight, that they are different and not tainted from the world.
When I was a teenager there was stuff going on in secret all of the time, sex, drinking, drugs. The next generation here was either worse or worse at keeping secrets. There were times when week after week there were annoucements and a big chucnk of young people were df'd or reproved. I can't imagine that things are improving.
Jehovah's "clean people" are only clean on the outside. Even if they outwardly have an appearance of high morality, in secret they are caught up in sin. Not just the sins you can get df'd for, but other things like lack of love, harboring hatred, unjust treatment of widows and orphans, deceipt, etc.
in david splane's talk, "remain in the secret place of the most high", at the 2010 district convention he referred to "rutherford, a prominent member of the governing body".. while technically correct (the governing body is a technical term for a board of directors), the term "governing body" currently has a spiritual meaning, seperate from "board of directors", in the eyes of jws: the representatives of the faithful and discreet slave who make the decisions on spiritual matters.
my understanding is that the "board of directors" handle other business/legal operations (since the 80s re-org).. please correct my if i am wrong, but retroactively applying the modern-day understanding of the term "governing body" to the board of directors in the rutherford/knorr era suggests that the board of directors had equal input on spiritual matters.
my understanding though is that the president/vice-president made the majority of decisions on spiritual matters during that time.. does anyone know of any quotes or references from watchtower material that states who actually made the spiritual decisions during the rutherford/knorr era?.
As I understand it, originally the board of directors was the governing body. However what resulted in an early schism was that Rutherford was unilaterally making decisions (such as authorizing the writing and printing of the Finished Mystery) without the approval of the board. Whereas, Russell envisioned that the board would share in making decisions. Rutherford was the Boss. He was in charge and he didn't share in making decisions. Knorr acted similarly, though he defaulted to Franz on theological matters.

I enjoy this sort of thing --
Luke states in the beginning of his gospel how he went about writing it and for what purpose. His gospel is only as good as his sources and research was. He was not an eyewitness. In the book of Acts he was an eyewitness to portions and shifts his language to say, "we did this" and "we did that".
Papias in the 2nd century had some interesting things to say about Mark. He said Mark wrote down what Peter had orally taught as an aid for others. Papias indicates that everything in Mark wasn't in the proper order but that he did the best he could to make an accurate representation of what he had heard. Again, Mark was not an eyewitness and was writing down from Peter's rembrances.
According to Papias, Matthew was originally written in the language of the Hebrews (there are competing theories on if this was Aramaic or Hebrew). We don't have access to this early form of Matthew so not sure if we are talking about the one that was circulated in Greek or an all-together different version. The Gospel of Matthew is very Hebrew-centric and the writer wants to show how Jesus fufilled the prophecies as the Christ. Above the other gospels it also upholds the law.
John is interesting. In addition to the apostle there seems to be another John the Elder who was notable in the early church. At the end of the gospel of John there is and end note at John 21:24 where another individual testifies to the truthfulness of what "the disciple that Jesus had loved" had written. I believe that individual was the Elder John which lead to later confusion over the gospel's original authorship. The gospel of John was written so that individuals would believe in Jesus. It is ordered around a sequence of signs to testify to Jesus, starting with the wedding feast in Cana culminating in the resurrection of Lazarus. John 20:30-31 clearly outlines the purpose of the book. The final end note admits that Jesus did much more than what that book contained.

I would be tempted to say 40-50% if we are talking about df offenses. Upwards of 95-98% if we are talking about sins that would still get you a back-room session.
Through their harsh, legalistic ways of dealing with problems, the Organization creates an environment where individuals are forced to conceal their sins and struggles.

The Gospel of John covers different ground the others. It deals more with the later ministry of Jesus and is more Jerusalem oriented.
