by donuthole inhttp://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/02/14/110214fa_fact_wright?currentpage=1.
this is a very long article (26 pages!).
i'm only part way through but it never fails to impress me, how similar some of these religions are to jehovah's witnesses.

One more :-)
Davis, early in his presentation, attacked the credibility of Scientology defectors, whom he calls “bitter apostates.” He said, “They make up stories.” He cited Bryan Wilson, an Oxford sociologist, who has argued that testimony from the disaffected should be treated skeptically, noting, “The apostate is generally in need of self-justification. He seeks to reconstruct his own past to excuse his former affiliations and to blame those who were formerly his closest associates.”

Doesn't this just ring bells -
I asked them how the controversy surrounding Scientology had affected them. “It hasn’t touched me,” Archer said. “It’s not that I’m not aware of it.” She went on, “Scientology is growing. It’s in a hundred and sixty-five countries.”
“Translated into fifty languages!” Jastrow added. “It’s the fastest-growing religion.” He added, “Scientologists do more good things for more people in more places around the world than any other organization ever.”

Another interesting bit -
For one course, she decided to write a paper about discrimination against various religions, including Scientology. “I wanted to see what the opposition was saying, so I went online,” she says. Another student turned her in to the school’s ethics committee. Information that doesn’t correspond to Scientology teachings is termed “entheta”—meaning confused or destructive thinking. Lauren agreed to stop doing research. “It was really easy not to look,” she says.

This is a very long article (26 pages!). I'm only part way through but it never fails to impress me, how similar some of these religions are to Jehovah's Witnesses. For instance, how publicly Scientology downplays their "disconnection" practice in the same way Jehovah's Witnesses do with disfellowshipping. Also noteworthy was the attitude towards those who had left the religion:
"It was also easy to dismiss people who quit the church. As [Haggis] put it, “There’s always disgruntled folks who say all sorts of things.”"
Edit -- here's another quote that echos the JW experience -
“The process of induction is so long and slow that you really do convince yourself of the truth of some of these things that don’t make sense,” Haggis told me. Although he refused to specify the contents of O.T. materials, on the ground that it offended Scientologists, he said, “If they’d sprung this stuff on me when I first walked in the door, I just would have laughed and left right away.

2011 Yearkbook - Provisions through the Governing Body
by pirata inexcerpts from the 2011 yearbook highlights of the past year:.
tracing all things with accuracy.
(p.9) jesus said that the faithful slave would be discreet in giving the domestics "their food at the proper time".

What used to be blanket worship of the faithful and discreet slave is now being directed specifically to the Governing Body. Governing Body 2.0 is moving toward more and more outward prominence. This is another example.

It was well acted, for certain, but so dreadfully dull. Nevertheless, it is shaping up for a good showing at the Academy Awards, maybe even Best Picture.

What video games were banned when you were a JW teen?
by BlackTwisted ini'm not a jw, but i'm kind of studying to be one though.. now that's out of the way, i remember mortal kombat was banned within my home-my mom isn't too fond of blood in video games..but yet, she plays dinosaur crisis sometimes....but then again, that was when i was 9...lol now that i'm 15 and i wanted mortal kombat 9 (still) my mom stil lsaid no...but then again, she would let me play it online..i dont know why..its strange, but hey, whatever works for her and me i guess.. .
um...lets see..any shooting games, or any games that has blood in it, she wont let me get.
so i can still play fighting games, just not the ones with blood...eh, oh well.i'm surprised she even let me play "dead or alive" and "soul calibur"!

A friend of mine had to take the original Legend of Zelda back because the main enemy Ganon is referred to as the prince of darkness. I still recall his mother clucking at her triumph of overcoming the store's no-return-on-open-games policy by announcing Jehovah's disproval of those who practice spiritism.
On a congregation level a bunch of us got busted in a local needs about playing Duke Nukem. I think we were around twenty years old. A friend of mine worked at a local computer shop and we got to have LAN parties after hours, playing into the wee hours of the night. The elders gave a talk about getting involved in violent video games. (It didn't help that my buddy had made a custom level with the design based on the local assembly hall.) We bristled at the chastisement, calling the elder a hypocrite because we knew that he played Command & Conquer on his home PC.
A later incident was at the district convention where a teenage guy was interviewed about his involvement with the game The Sims. The boy said that he wanted to make his characters in the game two adult males to simulate two pioneer brothers who lived together. He was horrified when the men in the game started kissing. The speaker proclaimed, "That's Sick!" Me and my wife sat in the audience not buying his story, knowing full and well that you had to command Sims of the same sex to kiss.

Paul, leading authority on Christianity, does NOT quote Jesus!
by Terry inpaul's letters practically invent christianity.. the gospels trickled in after him.. paul never walked with jesus and yet explains him.. never a quote from the master at all.. yet, paul is such a maven.. if jesus couldn't be bothered to actually reveal what he was all about to his apostles with whom he ate, drank, spoke and slept---why this persecutor, saul?.
the apostles heard every word jesus spoke and were willing to die for him.. paul didn't--yet--miraculously explained every detail of the entire history of god's purpose including his messiah.. .
can anybody provide a non-gimmick answer?.

I think it is a mistake to think that when jews started following Christ they suddenly dropped all identity with their former religion. Acts speaks about some "Pharisess that believed" and show that the followers in Jerusalem were in attendence at the temple and synogogue as well as going through the Jewish purification rites and practices and were "zealous for the law".
As a lifelong Pharisee, Paul might have seen the resurrection of Jesus as confirmation of his beliefs. Additionally, he was willing to become all things to all people and his arguing as Pharisee was a way to gain favor with his audience. In the same account he would later appeal to his Roman citizenship to get him out of a bind. In his letters you can see him appeal to his commission as an apostle when addressing believers.

@Vidiot - posted to the thread you pointed out.
@I Quit! - The Society has hyprocritically planned for the future, made long term building plans, bought and improved real estate, made business and stock market investments, all while chastising the rank and file for doing the same.
