My memory of it was that it actually upheld communist values by suggesting the New World Society would not be democratic or something -- it has been decades though since I read it.

i believe today's witnesses lack zeal, resolve, "love" of the "truth"......just to name a few things.. years ago, witnesses were excited to knock on doors and tell people they were gonna die if they didn't accept paradise.. now, when you see jws in service, they all look zombied out.. it's a slowly dying religion that will last probably forever like an ancient rotted out tree..
Overall a greater cooling off and corporate homegenization stamping out any individuality
One of the things you see is how socially there is less happening in the congregation than decades ago. There have been years of crackdowns on congregation gatherings -- now even getting together to study is discouraged. Picnics, parties, sports -- diminishing. Even getting rid of the home bookstudy (with the obligatory "goodie" nights).
Talks are all getting homogenized. More emphasis on sticking to the outline. In the late 70's into the 80's you might have sketches on the TMS school, slides for public talks, etc. Everything is extremely scripted with little variance.
The literatue is dumbed down. There is no longer a focus on defending the core doctrines in the Bible study books as these are pushed off to appendixes in the back. If your Bible student will just accept 1914 -- why take the time to explain it to them? Similiarly ---
When new light is presented there is less emphasis on "selling it" to the rank and file -- it is more take it or hit the road.
The "meaty" books on Bible prophets are gone and replaced by lighter books about what does Zechariah have to say about Christian dress and grooming.
The Faithful & Discreet Slave is further elevated and glorified and more closely positioned with the Governing Body then the scattered "annointed ones".
The overall zeal of the Witnesses are diminishing if not their belief that is the truth. They pay lip service to their beliefs but do not put their money where their mouth is in terms of donations or field service or future plans. (This is the weird anonomly where sometimes the most vocal defenders of "the Truth" are those that are low in field service hours or falling short in some other area.)

Allowance does not equal endorsement.
Lots of activities were carried out in the Bible and claimed to be from God -- it doesn't make it so anymore than the Watchtower's utterances.
Jesus had a very high view of women and did not endorse abuse. (Even uncommonly so according to the gospel writers.)
I would even argue that Paul valued women and saw them as his fellow workers and he spoke about the equality of the sexes that existed in Christ. My take on him is that he understood that there was a certain norm in the world at the time and it would be best if Christians did not upset the apple cart by rebelling against norm and law.

Does anyone know if the literature ever deals with domestic abuse in the context of happening in the congregation, or are the examples more like this, dealing with unbelievers and wordly people?

I just received a respnse back from the Women's Safe House of St. Louis:
I read the paragraph and it definitely seems to reflect victim-blaming rather than placing the responsibility of the violence squarely on the shoulders of the perpetrator.
There are individuals in St. Louis that provide spiritual counseling for women victims/survivors of violence.
I also work with a group of domestic and sexual violence advocates outside of my office. We work toward dispelling myths within the Church about the teachings of Christ toward intimate relationships.
Thanks again for the work that you are doing to end violence against women and girls.

While I enjoy a good conspiracy and have no doubt that that there might be some closet-apostates within the ranks I have to disagree.
These two paragraphs merely verbalizes a long-standing attitude the Watchtower has manifested toward domestic abuse.
The semi-private nature of the study edition affords a greater freeness of speech for the Watchtower.
a very reliable friend told me this: the bro was commenting on what was "unacceptable" conduct in the bedroom between married persons.
needless to say, he had everyone's attention.
he went on to say "we must avoid perversions such as oral and annual sex.
Kids listen to this rap-crap because they like the beat. Well it will BEAT you right out of the TRUTH!

E-mailed 2 local agencies and mailed another.
If the Society responds I believe they'll simply decry dosmetic abuse as a terrible thing and point to past issues of Awake! that deal with the topic as how proactive they are being.
