by MC RubberMallet inthe past few weeks have been hectic.. but i went through an experience that has messed me up since.. i met up with an old friend one day who i know went apostate.
it was a really bad day for me, which was really bad for me since i've been taking ttatt as a speed bump but still moving along in life with an ok adjustment.
he since brought a really nice house, cars, new job, everything he always wanted without feeling guilt.

"Would it be approximate to say that matter is a byproduct of "nothing" with substance?"
According Alan Guth's inflationary theory the universe and everything in it is the "Ultimate Free Lunch"
There is an interesting concept I first remember understanding when studying Line Integrals. It's independence of path. It's used elsewhere in math, but that's where I first remember it. Expanding the concept, if the Universe begin with some arbitrary properties (or no properties), and someday returns to that same base state of properties (or no properties), just about anything can happen in between without violating the known laws of the Universe (like the conservation laws or the laws of thermodynamics). In other words, in the end, it is all zero sum.

For those of you who do not believe in corporal punishment...
by Chemical Emotions inthat is, for those of you who actually think that hitting children is wrong, what types of discipline do you find more effective?
i'm not a parent but when dealing with kids, i've seen that time-outs tend to make kids feel isolated and can really hurt them.
if they're near others and are checked up on frequently, it seems ok. but when they're completely ignored, that is just bad.

Surprising 5 graduate degrees that don't pay off
by Scott77 in5 graduate degrees that don't pay offby kathryn hawkins bankrate.com .
123456>5 graduate degrees that don't pay offin today's tough job market, many recent college graduates are enrolling in graduate programs to enhance their credentials and gain an edge with hiring managers.
in some cases, the tactic may lead to lucrative job opportunities.

"And often the best, or only way to get a raise is to expand your skills with some outside training and apply at some other company."
Very true. The unfortunate truth is it is often more profitable for your career to job-hop the first 5 years before you settle down somewhere with a 2-3% yearly raise and the occasional promotion. You can easily make 25-50% more over the course of your career by moving around a few times towards the beginning.
"No, which law school you graduate from determines what types of jobs you will be able to land."
Also very true, and applicable for other professional degrees as well. This is biting some large companies in the behind as they are hiring for top-tier education, while their competitors are hiring for top-tier talent, and they aren't the same thing. But it's also much harder to interview for talent, and requires your HR and Management to have better recruiting skills, whereas it is easier for Management to rubber stamp hiring graduates of the best schools with the best GPAs.
I see this in my own job experience when the business managers ponder why we are consistently behind the competition in new ideas, marketshare, and profitability when the majority of our employees are PhD's from top schools.
I think an email conversation I read a few weeks ago sums up why. PhD1 asks, "What do we do when we've reached six sigma quality on our products?" PhD2 replies, "Then we shoot for seven and eight sigma. Because we can." Keep in mind, this is for products that have volumes of less than 10,000 each per year. It brings a lot more overhead to the company, and no additional value to investors, or customers.
Some of the best educated know a lot, but they understand very little.

Stop treating dates like a job interview and you'll do better. Don't ask questions like: Who do you admire most? What's your biggest accomplishment in life? Where do you see yourself in five years? These are not questions you ask on a first date. These are just questions that allow you to fixate on things you don't like instead of actually seeing if you have some chemistry with the person. Just go hang out instead of creating a laundry list of interview questions.

Loss of AMC shows how can I get them?
by manicmama inas many of you may know, dishnet in it's infinite wisdom decided to drop all of their amc programming.
since many of you out there are much more tech savy than i, is there any way to get their programming such as a roku player with netflix or hulu plus?
i would like to tell dish to shove it, but i don't want to go to another cable service.

Dunno about Hell on Wheels, but many of AMC's other shows, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Walking Dead, etc., can all be streamed through Netflix, you just won't get them until after the on-air season is over.

"However, if the Higgs bosun is simply the result of exciting the underlying field such that it momentarily changes state (to a particle) and then decays away then I can almost square that."
That's closer. Think of a charged particle being accelerated in a magnetic field. The magnetic field has some value of energy density, which is transferred to the particle causing it to accelerate as it moves through the field. The Higgs Field also has some value for energy density. When it interacts with certain particles (they're not really particles, they are fields, but thinking of them as particles is fine for this), energy is transferred to the particle, but instead of that energy being in the form of something like acceleration, that energy is transferred by E=MC^2 as mass.
If a particle absorbs or releases electromagnetic energy, it is really absorbing or releasing photons, as they are the force carrier for the electromagnetic force allowing energy transfer to take place. Similarly, the Higgs Boson is the force carrier for the Higgs Field, and are absorbed by certain particles, again allowing energy to be transferred from the Higgs Field into mass by E=MC^2. Running particles through an accelerator and smashing them together with enough energy does the opposite as you already know.
