i'm new to the forum and couldn't find a place for new members to introduce themselves... so here i am, starting a new topic!(bold!).

i started studying with the jws a few months ago.

Hmm... I never thought about how the people figure out what is spirit directed and what is not - especially as talking to spirits is discouraged. I'll definitely ask about that next time. I remember the study-guy talking about how these people are annointed and can feel the spirit within them, so whatever they do is considered to be with the approval of God.

No. 4 - I don't care very much about, sorry - I'm not from a Christian background.

5-6 I will find out more about before I bring it up in study.

7 - only came to my notice after I joined this forum.
I've been wondering how to bring it up. Some time ago, the people I'm studying with brought up the Catholic church abuses, tut-tutted and saw it as proof of other strains of Christianity being corrupt and from the Devil. It will be interesting to see their reaction to this.
I'm not going to the study to be confrontational. I started studying with some genuine interest in religion & in the bible (which I know are two separate things )

I've been following the "A look inside Bethel life" thread - it sounds a lot like a corporation making cost-cutting measures via layoffs. Very sad for those going through it :(

@ninja: I plan to become an old "moo" when I'm mother-in-law aged :D I have it all mapped out... hehehe...

@wobble: The guy I'm studying with readily accepts the mistakes made by the organisation - like the whole "this generation will see the end" thing. He believes the organisation is spirit directed, but since it is run by imperfect humans, errors will be made.

But why don't they take care of orphans and widows? I haven't heard about this before... please tell me more.

@chicken little: Guy whom I study with - sometimes his wife or sister comes along. Once it was another married guy. Once or twice it was him alone. It doesn't bother me at all.

@Witness 007: I must say that JW women are mostly really beautiful. Unfortunately, I have a boyfriend and I'm female. (I like to think I'm bi-curious, but that is only a fancy)

@Albert Einstein: The lack of last name isn't about being on a JW forum, it is being on the internet in general :) I'm not a fan of revealing extra-personal details on the internet. I do have a facebook page, but now I regret having it at all - wayyy too open! Even though the only people I have on there are people that I know and have met.

The disfellowshipment is pretty bad though. I was talking to a lady in the congregation about it. One of her closest friends was disfellowshipped and she was sad about it - but kept repeating to me how the things the other girl did were "bad." When I questioned her about where she got all this information from, she says - "everyone in the congregation knows." Me - mouth hanging open! She's cut off this girl because of gossip and rumours :(

Even before I joined this website, I knew I would never become a witness. The idea that an organisation has absolute control over my life doesn't sit right with me But I do love the personalised bible study! Tomorrow's the next one - I am looking forward to it! Yay!

Here's an example to get you started. The current thing I've been bothering the people I study with (I'm a girl, but I study with a guy - apparently this is unusual) is why women are made to wear skirts to meetings and when they go door to door.

So, they picked up a passage from 1Tim 9,10 (Timothy again!) which says "Likewise I desire the women to adorn themselves in well-arranged dress, with modesty and soundness of mind, not with styles of hair braiding and gold or pearls or very expensive garb,"

Immediately, I said - Well! That means women aren't supposed to braid their hair! Neither wear gold nor pearls! You guys don't follow that...

To that, they got very defensive and said that paragraph only means that women should dress modestly, it shouldn't be taken literally.

BUT, they take the next paragraph literally where it says that women should learn in silence with full submissiveness.

PAH! When I asked the guy how they deiced which parts of the bible must be taken literally and which parts needed to be interpreted, he didn't have an answer. He actually couldn't see my point about the hypocrisy :(

Anyone have any more I could ask?

How bad IS this religion on a relationship??

Hi -Tank...

I know this discussion is about 4 months old and things have probably moved on. I wanted to share the tale of my current boyfriend...

He used to date a JW.. They had to hide and go out because she was too afraid about being seen in public with a non-JW. He finally started bible study and was thinking of getting converted. Then one day, she broke down, confessed to her family and just cut him out of her life. She wouldn't answer calls, emails, nothing. She was his one true love. He waited 4 years to even kiss her for the first time...

Then, him and I met. He had continued studying with the JW, and since I was also interested in various religions, I'm studying too.. (do see my introductory post for details)

But the fact is, he found love again after thinking he has lost the love of his life. As his second love, I do have to deal with feelings of never being as good as her... but I also know and feel that he's making a conscious effort to give me all and not dwell upon her. Apart from that, he's introduced me to his parents - something he never thought of doing with her. All these things make me feel really special!

The point I'm trying to get to is - he did find love again. And so will you.

Pursue her, study with her, make the changes in your life - but only if YOU want to make these changes from within yourself & NOT only because you want to be with her. No matter how things turn out (new as I am, I feel I can guarantee) the people on the forum will be there to support you.

For especially when life seems at it's worst point and all seems lost, there's nothing else for life to do but to get better :)

I've read some more of the posts and just saw the part where you said you would be 'sticking to your guns' - good on you :)

And yes, I overanalyse and I'm a woman.

Try not to say that too often though. Nor pull out this forum discussion as proof that women admit to overanalysis!

Hello everybody!

I would've joined this forum so much earlier if I had known what a warm, friendly, inviting place it is :) I come back from work and there are a whole heap of replies waiting for me! *feels all warm and fuzzy inside*

Some replies -

"Most people believe that they could never be recruited into a cult." That's true for me too. I don't believe I could ever be indoctrined. But, I shall take your warning to heart and lay my hands on the anti-cult book.

I do hope the love bombing doesn't end - I enjoy it! :D Doesn't mean I will join up just for it to continue. I can see how people who are going through a difficult time in their life would be seduced by this. Just somewhere to feel accepted and get some support.

I do enjoy the studies! It is fun to have ideas that oppose my current line of thought thrown at me. It's a way to clarify what I believe in and why I do as well. And it is a great way to learn why other people belive what they do, and why they think something is the "truth". My one fascination with religions (all of them) is the way everyone who practices a religion are dead sure they are right and everyone else is wrong. Is there no room for error?

Re: handle - my first name is Deepti (female) and "moo" comes from my family name.

It is interesting to read everybody's experiences, the highs & lows, and the uplifting stories about how people found themselves after leaving.

There must be a place here (on these forums) to post about the various factual errors in the WTBTS publications. I've had too much time on my hands and have been looking up the quotations, etc. I'll put them up sometimes later.

It's lovely to be welcomed :)

I badger the JWs with questions all the time. Something I found out (by accident, but now I make a conscious effort) is to ask them the same question again after about a month or so and see how their answer changes.

For example, I'm very feminist and after visiting the congregation, I was a bit miffed that none of the speakers were women. When I asked them if women can hold leadership positions in the congregation, they said "of course!" I asked them the question again 2 weeks ago (a little more than a month after the first time) and they showed me a passage in 1Tim 2:11 that said a woman should learn in submissiveness. I was livid! It seemed like they now considered me "ready" to know about the real stuff.

ACK! After browsing through the forums a bit, I see a lot of people have had experiences with being shunned, oppressive rules, etc. It doesn't seem like a good religion to be part of :(

Hello! I'm new to the forum and couldn't find a place for new members to introduce themselves... so here I am, starting a new topic!(bold!)

I started studying with the JWs a few months ago. We're now on Chap. 5 of What the Bible Really Teaches and things are going well. My stated intention at the start of the study - and now - is just to learn more about different religions and their beliefs. I have no wish to become a JW (although the people I'm studying with seem to have forgotten that.. hehe)

Current experience -
All the JWs I've met so far are really sweet people. Some of them don't fully practice what they preach (e.g. attachment to worldly things), but on the whole, they seem happy, healthy, loving. The congregation are really friendly (I've been to a few Sunday meetings already - not a regular visitor though.) I find that the only people I don't like are the Elder & his wife who were assigned to this congregation from the local Bethel. Theirs are the only smiles in the whole room that seem fake

Why I'm here -
I found a reference to these forums on Mininova (user: HannahTheDog) and thought I would join up. A place to balance out all the indoctrination. Somewhere to discuss the studies (with people who are not witnesses themselves). This is my first time contributing on any forum... please be nice :)

Religious background -
None! I believe that whether or not there is a God doesn't make a difference to my present life. I still want to be a good person, not steal, love everyone (sure!). Pray when I feel grateful/sad. I have a fantastic life... thanks to parents' efforts/lucky stars!
I don't believe my entry into heaven/hell/lack of rebirth/paradise earth have anything to do with how much I do for God (as in, he doesn't need his ass kissed)... but if they exist, then getting in should depend upon the good I've done in this life, for myself and other people.

That's enough introduction for one post - I got carried away talking about myself
