  Do you use a dictionary?

  in my work, i rely upon google for quick answers on definition (denotation), pronunciation (audio), etymology, shades of meaning (connotation), etc.. what i really mean is, do you use an actual unabridged websters, the one you get a hernia lifting?

  i ask because, last night, i was tired of fighting with my two ailing computers and decided to pull the big book off the shelf.

  it was great, hearkening back to olden times -- childhood -- when i read real books and periodicals and wrote unknown words into a notepad (the paper sort) and pored over old noah's offerings.. your thoughts?.

  As an early teen I would of course look up "rude" words, but also of course the dictionaries I had access to then would contain none.

  When I was about 18 I bought a more comprehensive dictionary - nothing massive but one volume about the same size as a pair of insight books bound together.

  And of course the first thing I did was look up to see what rude words were in there.

  Now I tend to use online for spelling (using real English - none of this New World colonialist stuff - perhaps you can think of a rude word to describe my attitude? ) and definition.

  Yes, the dictionary in book form has for me gone the way of the typewriter - fallen into desuetude.

  as i was driving past a certain gas station today, i recalled that the family who own it are called on by a friend of mine, and in a territory where it's hard to find interest.

  it reminded me of an incident months back when this friend, brother d, discovered that another friend, brother b, was calling on that family too.

  hey, gotta make your time.. those two went at it.

  I remember the "she's my study" "no she's mine" battles. One got particularly ugly. An elderly sister - very genuine and kind but who would stand her ground - locked horns with a particularly unpleasant and sharp tongued elder's wife.

  The elder (weak and lily-livered especially when it came to his wife) had the "book study" at his home and banned the elderly sister from going to the group there.

  After several weeks of this the rest of the body - instead of removing the toady elder - moved the elderly sister to a different group.

  The bad news is that the "study" that was fought over got baptised.

  The good news is she has been inactive for over twenty years! And not too long afterwards the toady elder was removed by a circuit overseer when he heard about it.

  Odd choice of words

  why is it that when a jw gives someone a magazine, they use the word "place" instead of "give"?

  as in "i placed a magazine with him".

  and why do regular door-to-door jws of no special rank refer to themselves as publishers?

  I've never thought of that Neveula - but I wonder if it goes back to when we asked for money (invited the householder to take them on a contribution of 20 cents/1 shilling/20 pence the pair) from people.

  To go back and boast that you'd "placed" 6 magazines sounded so much better (more righteous) than that you'd sold 6 magazines for the non-profit charity that is the Watchtower.

  many here have asked how the average witness in australia is taking the news of the arc findings and conclusions.. is it affecting them?.

  sorry to say, hardly any are even aware of the facts.

  those that are, have been convinced that all the publicity is "apostate lies and satanic propaganda".

  Look ... it is having an effect.

  I'm here in the UK and I was told separately by two elders about the ARC last year. I knew but played dumb and even said to them "is that on jaydubyadotborg legal section?" - both of them got defensive and said "no but it's on a legitimate government website."

  One lied through his teeth about GJ being grabbed at the airport and frog marched to give his testimony but that he did "a good job". I said I'd have to watch! (already had of course)

  These elders are circuit heavies - on the platform and hob-nobbing with the CO for circuit jobs and one of them told me that a group of elders were talking about it at some department head coffee break. (You know - assembly accounts overseer, assembly overseer etc.)

  If these - and two or three others in my hall of mentioned it you can bet there are a similar number who watch and keep quiet. (Bit like porn! Probably for everyone found out there are another dozen doing it!)

  They all "continue to serve" but it must rattle their cages.

  And I'm 10,000 miles away from Australia - admittedly in the old "mother country".

  Don't be too disappointed - keep chipping away.

  so it looks like now i'm a return visit.

  i don't have it in me to be mean to the j dubs when they drop by so i chat with them.

  on thanksgiving morning one of them dropped by (my wife previously asked them to stop coming by).

  during the book study which is basically a book all about the history of "gods organization" ©.

  a paragraph that hit me like a ton of the proverbial bricks was this.... 9 first, jehovah’s servants came to have the proper view of the importance of god’s name.

  faithful early bible students viewed the ransom arrangement as the bible’s main teaching.

  It was also ironic that of the 40 in attendance (out of a publisher count of 75) that the only "youths" (under 18 years old) there were a 4 year old boy who was fast asleep on a chair, and a 12 year old autistic boy who sat transfixed with his mouth open.

  Yes I endured that nonsense yesterday, sitting on my hands so as not to raise one of them and say how come Isaiah 43 v 10 is given more weight than Revelation 17 v 6 and Acts 1 v 8.

  That was after I wondered why the globe in the Stephen Lett video was spinning the wrong way.

  Children and Blood Transfusions

  a hospital in qld.

  australia sought orders to allow a blood transfusion on a minor if necessary.

  this occurred on the 12th june 2015.the child was 7 years old and required a liver transplant within the next two or three years otherwise death was seen as inevitable.

  Wow Rebel 8. What a situation.

  As I understand it, nowadays HLC's basically "give permission" for parents to comply with court orders for younger children without congregation sanction.

  1. attend a charity christmas party which my wife (active jw) helps to organise each year 😀.

  2. buy a very small christmas tree with lights for the living room (which can easily be hidden away if jw friends are coming up).

  3. buy some nice presents for my family.

  Watch a Harry Potter movie with a couple of glasses of brandy instead of going to the meeting. (Xmas falls on Sunday and our meetings are 2pm!)
