i was talking with my husband the other day about the jw's belief that the "christmas star" that guided the magi to christ was the doings of satan.
he didn't believe me; this is what i found in the "my book of bible stories" (copied verbatim from cd-rom).
who do you think made that new star to shine?
This does bring up a good point. It's one thing to believe Astrology is superstition, it's another to believe that Satan's behind it..

if the theory of "when we die god had a meaning for us to go" or "it was our turn to go" does that mean that if i were to kill someone (hypetheticaly speaking) than i was just carrying out gods will and doing his work.. if so why should i be punished.
Because god had a meaning for you to go.
Seriously, death does not necessarily happen by execution. I don't think this kind of reasoning would be applied to all deaths universally, it seems even the most bone headed minister would not say that if it was a service where it involved a clearly wrongful death such as outright murder..

I get the impression that it's because it's practicing astrology, fortelling the future etc. Of course, that's not exactly the same as saying Satan made the star shine, but I guess they weren't going for accuracy in the book of bible stories..

Hi Out, yes The World's Religions is a very good book, apparently it is widely used as an undergraduate text in comparative religion courses.
Not to detract from his credibility or anything, but I picked up a recent book of his on entheogenic plants: Cleansing the Doors of Perception. If it wasn't from him I don't think I would have looked into it. (besides it was a remainder copy for $5) Anyhow, if you're able to find TWR at the library let me know how you like it.

Well Fracoise I tried to round up more people for a gathering in that thread under Personal Experience but it seems there wasn't much interest. Of course, you know how single people aren't supposed to be alone together and we would have been without a chaperone.. Besides, I don't think you're my type.

what kind of movies did you enjoy when you were a teenager?
Well, one thing that comes to mind is that while books and movies are stories, (if you're talking about fiction or biography) music is more of a direct experience. I guess it touches you. Sound can be very powerful, I use some brainwave entrainment CDs and it can affect your mind deeply.. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that while book and movies can be just viewed as information, we tend to listen to music for the emotional influence. If you look at it this way, it makes sense that teens would like music that drives the hormones etc, as you said it's about whether you have grown in a way, emotionally I suppose.

Actually, my taste not only changes but it includes what I used to listen to, though I wouldn't listen to all of it all the time. I have gone from heavy metal to jazz/rock fusion to new age to ambient/trance/techno. There are some genres some people will not touch at all, but on occasion I will even listen to rap or country. Actually I think the same goes for books and movies too. How many guys do you know that likes romance novels or dramas? I think the basic answer to the question is quite simple. People's taste do not change because they, to an extent, do not change. Most people will stay within a certain range. Even though they may move from one genre to another, there is a limit to where they will go.
