That is clearly an analogy for a mental breakdown... No doubt the sound is a voice of some kind.. *nods to self*

I thought this thread would be about leaving old magazines under the doors of not-at-homes. Is that a pretty wide spread practice? A young brother here invented leaving tracts in the bathrooms...

Good Kharma? Bad Kharma?
by bboyneko ini found some ladies purse at the local shopping mall parking lot tonight, it had her entire life in it, her social security card, her cell phone, her cash, her credit cards, even her daughters social security card.. from looking through the contents, me and saffron were able to find out many things about her:.
1)she had recently moved from way out in the country to columbia maryland... 2)she was probably divorced from a man of middle eastern origens.
3)she was white.

Ah, karma is just cause and effect, sowing what you reap appears to be another version of it. What's interesting to me is this idea of breaking free from karma altogether. Good and bad is of course relative too, atleast from the usual understanding of the words.
Oh yeah, I have a platinum card, not an impressive credit line though. I think the biggy is titanium now, or something.. In any case, it is just power to incur a bigger debt. It certainly has nothing to do with whether you have or even make money..

Compassion exercise.. or something like that
by Introspection inok let me know what you guys think of this, a simple idea.. look into someone's eyes, it would be good if it's someone you admire for their kindness.
you can also look at a picture, portrait would probably work best, depends on the eyes.
after a while, see if you see yourself.. oh yeah, don't think about anything.

Getting serious about a sense of humor
by Introspection insometimes we react to some kind of joke and say something like "well!
that's just not funny!
that's serious stuff!
-
Introspection
Sometimes we react to some kind of joke and say something like "Well! That's just not funny! That's serious stuff!" Well, I agree that can be true in one type of situation, and that is when it is causing others suffering.
It's not unlike the Nelson character in the Simpsons, laughing at the misfortune of others in the familiar "haw haw!" But see, even that is funny from a third person perspective, in that we see the silliness of the whole situation, and it is only serious if we identify with the cartoon character that is being laughed at.
But having said that, I think it's important for each of us to understand that we have some control over our suffering, and a lot of that has to do with our sense of self, our sense of what is important and what is true. (or, atleast what we cling to as such)
I think it's important to distinguish "funny stuff" with a sense of humor, too. I'm certainly not suggesting that we turn everything into a joke, you've probably seen how some people who try too hard is just not as funny as they want to be. But like any other sense, I think a sense of humor allows us to recognize things as they are. (in a sense, anyway)
When I'm talking to you online, I see only what you write in your messages, I know that your message is not you. I think you are much more than that. You can also address someone in a message without talking about them, it happens all the time really. And frankly, even if someone was to talk about your opinion/feeling/belief on something, (or something you happen to believe in along with other people, as my friend Angus from grade school said: "It's my God too!") is it such a big deal that it is being questioned? For those of us who used to be JWs, that happend once before right?
Now, is this type of outlook realistic to expect from everyone? For example, isn't self-esteem important for young people, or people who have been mentally abused in some way? Sure. But it seems to me even young kids can laugh at themselves, so I think if we play our cards right it's something we can retain. Even if we forget, I don't think it's ever too late to rediscover it. What you ultimately discover, I think, is not just some way of temporarily breaking the ice or relieving stress, or even just the sense of humor itself - it is nothing less than an opened heart.

Intro's quote-o-rama
by Introspection ini guess i've been inspired by stephen's quote threads, so i'm going to start one myself.. not one particular author here, just whatever i can find:.
q: why do you think that people are so protective of their egos?
why is it so hard to let go of one's ego?.
-
Introspection
To be honest with you Lefthand, I thought you were joking in the first message, but I guess I was wrong. The quote I'm referring to is the one by Chogyam Trungpa, the one you brought up concerning being protective of egos, and finding it hard to let go of.
The first statement regarding selfcenteredness isn't directed at "you", I don't even know who you are. The comment regarding your nickname is directed towards you I suppose, but specifically to your nick name on the board. It isn't even your real name, but I guess I can't help it if people want to take that seriously.
What it comes down to is the only thing we can say about each other is regarding what we write. Offense is taken when you extend that to the rest of you rather than the words, or if you choose to identify with the few words you have written. But in any case, I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding, but you do know the scripture in Proverbs about the taking of offense don't you? If you look at my other messages, especially ones in the last few weeks, you'll see a lot of them aren't serious.
If you wish to pursue this, I'd appreciate it if you can move it to another thread, since this one is supposed to be quotes. You're certainly welcome to post any quotes you like, but I don't think other people would be too interested in pursuing this stuff between you and me. (frankly, I'm not that interested either)

Don't be NEGATIVE
by msil intake a walk through the cemetery and while you are there look at all the gravestones.. on each gravestone you will see engraved the name of the deceased person.
in most cases underneath the name will be a birth date and date of death.
for example: john doe, 4 may 1957 - 21 october 2000.. then there will be some short inscription.

Thanks for pointing this out! I'll be sure to note in my will to make it a plus sign, or better yet multiplication, division sign or square root, i, or the equivalent in American Sign Language with some other interesting inscription...
