From what I can remember in chatting with Eckists online, the concepts are taken from principles found in older systems. What are some specific ones?

Aztec: Nah. You may be sleepy if you don't get enough sleep or if you over eat, but without some kind of imbalance it's not going to make you tired. People remark how the Thanksgiving turkey makes them sleepy, but they never notice how much they overeat!

You know, I think I used to have this but don't anymore. Of course, I used to be really depressed when I still had the aftertaste of JW life in my head, but it's been a few years now. I have gotten those full spectrum lights (had a folding one by Ott at my desk at work all the time, can be had for $40 now) and think it helped some. Also try some pumpkin seeds for a vegetarian source of tryptophan, which will help boost your seratonin level.

Latest Watctower: Don't Assume You Go To Heaven
by minimus in2-15-03 wt.
says that if you think you're going to heaven, think again!
you're probably either emotional because a mate or close friend died, or on medication, or are looking for special recognition, because of bible knowledge.so don't even think about it!!

So... How is this different from just being one of Jehovah's Witnesses..?

What could it be.....
by SheilaM inafter leaving chat last night, i was in bed snuggled next to thunderrider thinking.
one of the group had been doing blurbs of kingdom songs, i don't remember any songs, or any scriptures or hardly any names of the books, i don't remember quotes from the stage or comments made by others.
have any of you ever felt this way?

It could be you're forgetting the stuff. What's cool to me is that I can now look at parts of the bible that witnesses used to quote a lot and see a completely different meaning or another side of it. I don't actually read the bible either, but being on this board this stuff just comes up - so the same thing from the past has a different meaning.

You know, isn't it funny that all these religions have some sort of "exercise" - be it prayer, some sort of meditation, chanting or whatever? Now I'm not saying those things are wrong or anything, but what is the intent except to try to get God to do what you want - show up at your beck and call, basically?
Of course, this is to say nothing of the fact that seeing a special light or whatever is simply PHENOMENA. I mean, sure if it's unusual enough it may be kind of interesting, but how do you go from that to concluding that you found God? Lets just consider for a moment the possibility that ultimate reality is not found in any one or two of the senses, be it vision, hearing, smell, taste or whatever. What's left? How can you "know" something? I mean we do know everyday relative stuff through the senses, but what's the common denominator there? Hmm.. What about awareness? I mean you need awareness with any of the senses, but now compare this to the typical approach of religion: Do this that and the other thing and you'll get from A to B. Are you aware of what you're doing? Or are you just acting like the rest of the lemmings because you've heard it's the thing to do?
Now don't get me wrong, I recognize that there are a lot of things in life where we'd try it and see how it goes, and of course in that case you're testing it out. But when someone follows something religiously, they just seem to be going at it like they're in a trance right? Even the pursuit of awareness itself can take on this form, you can meditate or whatever just out of a belief that you'll become more aware. What if it's really just a simple matter of being aware, rather than any object of awareness? Sounds boring eh? Well, I guess that's why religion sells. There ain't too many selling points to just being aware, and it doesn't cost anything so it can't be worth anything right? What if the truth is just not that exciting?

Even knowing isn't quite enough. There is realization and actualization, you can know till the cows come home and never really get anywhere, but if there is some degree of actualization then it's not just a head game. In fact, that kind of knowledge can be missing in an actualized person, because they're not concerned about abstract intellectualizations. It's simply a matter of naturally being yourself.

It's interesting Mum mentioned martial arts in connection with religion, because originally it did have something to do with spirituality. Back in the day in China it started with the Taoists and the Shaolin, although I'm not sure if you can call those religions if you really see them for what they are.
I'm not too big on the martial aspect these days, but I think the art part is a good one. The nice thing about this kind of art is that the palette is you, basically. Even though you are cultivating yourself, it does involve your relationship with others as well. Martial arts is often seen as an outlet for young people, but I think if it is only seen as an excuse to be able to kick ass then you're missing the finer points. Of course, if you're only interested in self defense and being able to take another guy down, you probably don't care - but not only is self discipline involved, the older arts actually include ways to take someone down in a merciful manner. There was very much an attitude of do as little damage as possible, even though the point was to survive. Like religion, I would recommend anyone who's interested to look for a school and teacher that gives more than lip service to these principles, someone who can really be a living example for the kids.

Do you still use the name Jehovah when you......
by termite 35 in..pray with your kids ?.
my son is only 8 and went to the kingdom hall from birth to 6 1/2 years old.i don't mind praying for/with him every night as he wants me to, even though my 'faith' has changed alot these past 18 months and at the moment i'm content to enjoy my freedom and let experiences in life direct me instead of a religion.
he wants me to use the j word and i feel really uncomfortable using it .

LOVE is a lovely idea for a name ! it's the love that Jesus offered , gave and showed that draws children to respond with the loyalty I see in my son.Though i'd sound like an Eastender saying it !!
Well, it is just an idea, and if you're not comfortable saying it you shouldn't. I would just point out one thing though, and that is if it's going to have any affect it would probably need to be used as a verb.
I would encourage you not to be too self conscious about how you sound, though. Be honest and open with your son, he would no doubt appreciate that and be able to sense it. Ultimately that's the example to set isn't it, not so much teaching them to be a certain way but to show him how to be honest with himself. Jesus said we have to be like young children, and that innocence is an integral part of that attitude. Sometimes the best thing we can do is to avoid corrupting that innocence, and in that way it's something we can learn from them.

You know, this is all sort of funny when you look at it from a certain common sense perspective.. First of all, just because you know someone's name (even if it is "God's name") does that mean you know THEM? When you go into a store and sees the guy's name tag, it doesn't mean you know that guy particularly well does it? Why would that be any different with God's name? It's supposed to be some kind of magic charm to get God to do something?
When I was at a local XJW Meetup last time, I mentioned to a friend that I don't have an issue with the word God, because by definition it is an unconditional, unlimited term. Of course, as you've noticed people do associate different things with different words, and of course that's just going to depend on the individual's mind. But I thought I'd offer an alternative to both name and title of God - Love. After all, the bible says God is love right? It's not too far fetched, and it would seem like that's not something most people would object to. I would guess the word love would invoke more of a genuine response from an innocent child, the experience would no doubt be very different than a word that brings up a whole system of belief - which does little more than get you to believe things. Why don't you give it a try? Let us know how that goes over won't you?
