John Doe-
You are right. but you dont have to come across as such an A**.
Yes he does, or he wouldn't be true to himself.
when i was a kid, i'm guessing 5 or 6 years old.
the "smurfs are demonized" rumors started spreading around.
after a few weeks of hearing that and having to throw away all my smurf toys, i was at the kingdom hall and a sister came in with a bookbag with a big picture of a smurf on it!

Josh, I could kiss you. I have posted this information on several other threads in the same manner, yet people still think I'm attacking them! Thank you for accepting my post in the spirit that it was intended.
I think that when people leave the JWs they adopt the mantra "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." In general, we tend to be choosier about our beliefs. There are three basic ways (that I can think of at this moment) to come to a belief: (1) personal perception, (2) the testimony of others or (3) the scientific method.
Since adopting the post-JW mantra, we are less likely to rely on #2 when choosing what to believe. Personal perception is good for certain things. It works for small, unimportant things like which comedian we find funny or what flavor coffee we like. It helps us pick friends. And it works in choosing religious beliefs and values. If something good happens to me, I may perceive it as a blessing from God. No one else has to believe that; if it brings comfort and happiness to me it is my right to have that perception and choose that belief.
When it comes to others trying to convince us of something we tend to rely on #3, the scientific method. You can read more about that here.
Again, you don't have to use this method to choose your particular beliefs. You do have to expect to use it to convince others to believe the same thing.
No tongue.
what is the most recent wt that states that only jw's will survive armegeddon?
i can't find it anywhere.
i thought it was in 2004. thanks !.
Hey i didnt realise that actually the GB DIDNT say 1975 the end would come...nope, it was people reading into what had been said even though they said not to do that...tut tut foolosh people believed then when it didnt happen they fell away and blamed Jahs org....
Hmmmmmmmm nice to have facts...
Yes, let's discuss some facts:
"WHAT about all this talk concerning the year 1975? Lively discussions, some based on speculation, have burst into flame during recent months among serious students of the Bible. Their interest has been kindled by the belief that 1975 will mark the end of 6,000 years of human history since Adam's creation. The nearness of such an important date indeed fires the imagination and presents unlimited possibilities for discussion.
2 But wait! How do we know their calculations are correct? What basis is there for saying Adam was created nearly 5,993 years ago? Does the one Book that can be implicitly trusted for its truthful historical accuracy, namely, the Inspired Word of Jehovah, the Holy Bible, give support and credence to such a conclusion?
35 One thing is absolutely certain, Bible chronology reinforced with fulfilled Bible prophecy shows that six thousand years of man's existence will soon be up, yes, within this generation! (Matt. 24:34) This is, therefore, no time to be indifferent and complacent. This is not the time to be toying with the words of Jesus that "concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father." (Matt. 24:36) To the contrary, it is a time when one should be keenly aware that the end of this system of things is rapidly coming to its violent end. Make no mistake, it is sufficient that the Father himself knows both the "day and hour"!
36 Even if one cannot see beyond 1975, is this any reason to be less active? The apostles could not see even this far; they knew nothing about 1975. All they could see was a short time ahead in which to finish the work assigned to them."

Get your facts straight.
i've noticed we have a few male posters here with wives who are still in the jws.
and i can think of one female poster (cognac) with a husband in the jws (although things are looking up for her).
of course we have a few spouses that came out together.. is it me, or does it seem like the women here are more likely to have divorced their jw husband--even before leaving--whereas the men are more likely to stay with their wives?
That's a good point jamie. I think, all things being equal, they will more often favor men. But sometimes things are not equal and you're dealing with a sociopath who knows how to manipulate. Or the man in question may just have gotten on the elders' bad side. I think that a bigger issue for the b0rg than sexism is classism. If the woman is a 5th gen alpha family member she may be more important to them than a 1st gen omega.
i da'ed myself back in october 2008.. i also work at a local community college, where the witnesses have a booth set up during the winter months and usually there are 3 -4 people.
just sitting there counting their time.. they are located in a student lounge area where i need to cross several times a day.. my question is this: would you just ignore them totally,.
would you approach them if they made eye contact, or would you just approach them whenever and say hello ?
I would talk to them, but probably not spur of the moment. I would want time to prepare first. I don't live in a place where the JWs know me but I like to think that wouldn't stop me. I would want to say something to try to make them think. If they behaved badly it would show to the people around them. If they behaved well and listened at least I would have imparted some information which could help them down the road.

I know one Elder said not to let the demons control us. He meant the fear. Yet, isn't that what the WTS does to people over demon stuff.
They create the fear and then say, and "we are the only ones who can save you".
That is 100% true! I used to lie awake terrified if I heard the slightest noise. OH NOES ITS TEH DEMONZ! It took a little while, but that fear has completely disappeard. Now if I walked into the living room and my couch was floating on the ceiling I wouldn't feal a twitch of fear--just overwhelming fascination and curiosity. Amazing how those kind experiences never happen to people like me . . . .

OTWO, I'm obviously not anti-divorce, but I think it's awesome when guys like you keep working at the marriage even when it's really hard. I salute you, sir.
the october awake is a well crafted issue called "secrets of family success".
lots and lots and lots of advice against getting divorced.
also, against cohabitation and ex-mates fighting.. the magazine contains 6 "profiles in success" - stuff like coping with losing a parent or child in death or being adopted or facing financial trouble..............................but................ .
I hated the family book even as a diehard Dub. It was so useless but they were always shoving it down our throats like it was a magic cure-all.

Ok someone if not alot of people believed the story when it rumored around why not now.
JWs believed it. We are not JWs. We've developed much higher criteria for choosing what to believe.
Before you think I'm being cruel, let me try to say the same thing I say every time this subject comes up. You believe you had this experience. I was not there, I have no basis on which to question your experience. The thing about experiences is we each have our individual perceptions. So you not only had an experience, you had a perception of an experience. Again, I was not there, I cannot judge your perception.
The only thing I can say is that your interpretation of that event seems unlikely based on what I know to be fact. You are fully entitled to believe whatever you want on the subject. If you want to convince others to believe it, you will need more than anecdotal evidence. The following video explains why that is:

I also highly recommend you rent the movie Hoodwinked. It's a great movie that really demonstrates the issues inherent in individual perceptions.
so, a poster here stated that he trolls the obits and counts his time while doing it.
anyone else here engage in this behavior when active?
or is he amongst the more "special" members of your average congregation?.
If you read everything that poster says, he's not a normal JW. He has a lot of beliefs that make the JWs look sane. Sounds a lot like my ex.
I remember being encouraged to write letters based on obits. Can't remember what book. May have been the newer ministry school book. I just wrote random letters to not-at-homes. Made my pioneer hours that way.
