  This. Right here. It ain't unique to the Dubs. I do NOT understand why so many parents seem only to care about obedience. At some point, you are not going to be there when you're child has to make a choice. How are they supposed to make an informed, intelligent decision when you never taught them how? You've only taught them to do what you say. Arrggh!

  Members of the JWs are just people. Some are good, some are bad. Some can swing either way depending on the circumstances. Some will go out of their way to do everything properly because they believe God is watching them and they must perform up to his standards. Some will pull crap like your G-pa because they believe they are special and God will let them get away stuff as long as they work hard in his service. Unfortunately, it's the latter type that more often make it into positions of power.

  when i was a jehovah's witness i remember these debates being mentioned about the raps of innocent children that elders commented, the blacks and whites segregation, the crosses and christmas tree in the bethal, etc.

  jehovah's witnesses have always been harassed for these things.

  with the changing world and knowledge of the scriptures they work hard to try to work towards accurateness.

  Butterfly, thank you for your post. This is pretty similar to how I felt about the witnesses when I first left them. I felt like they were a decent religion, with both good and bad people in it's ranks; that they knew and followed the Bible better than other religions, but they didn't have more of God's favor than other religions. Later on, I started to do research both on the WTS and other religions and revised my opinion.

  I know through discussion with you on this board and through email that you are an openminded and caring person. You may come to same conclusion I did. You may come to a different conclusion. You may remain with this conclusion. It's wonderful that you are able to think for yourself. And I think it's commendable that you're in a place now where you feel like you can accept the positive things you've gotten from the JWs in your life without giving the negative ones power. I think as long as you remain open-minded in your spiritual quest, you will find what you're looking for.

  I love survival stories. Whether it's the story of someone who purposefully lives off the land (My Side of the Mountain), someone who, through tragedy, must survive harsh circumstances (Life of Pi) or a cataclysmic event in which a small group of people manage to survive (Lucifer's Hammer). I loved Day After Tomorrow. Not the least bit realistic but really creepy in a fun way. I loved the short-lived show Jericho about a small town that must survive after nuclear war devestates the US.
