  You have brought up a subject that is foremost in my life.

  You're right the political and economic climate encourages and gives rise to the misuse of science. It also greatly diminshes the concept and greatness of democracy, it makes hollow the words of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and other great works supporting freedom.

  I believe that the misuse of government needs to be sounded loud and clear. A coalition of scientists, environmentalists, educators and others who support a change should join forces and make themselves heard, not once, but over and over. There have been times when such has been the case, a group of educators or scientists has come forward to speak out, but then what happens is that most of us never hear from them again. The media opportunity was there, the points were presented but the people forgot!

  A herculean effort must be launched to educate the public, education on the dangers and benefits of the genetic engineering of our food for instance, needs to be repeated and repeated. People are so busy, so used to bits of news here and there its easy for them to forget. They need consistent reminding and input on these issues and others, they need leadership.

  Religion is useless since the people who created these old religions were extremely ignorant about the natural world

  I agree! But how about a logical belief in God? Not a belief in any religion but just God, a creator. Why is that illogical?

  I have understood and agreed with much of what you have posted on this thread.

  In my ever so faulty mind, evolution is ridiculous and deserves no more than a tongue in cheek "dance" around the room. To say the world that teems with life, living organisms in balance with one another, was "created by blind forces", is not logical.

  That was not my argument. My argument was that many scientists strongly advocate evolution as the producer of the world as we know it, but while extolling the greatness of the evolutionary process they in effect will not chance that process. They will not put their money where their mouth is. Any abnormality is termed a birth defect. The drive is to limit these defects, not allow them to freely increase with the possibility of producing a further step in the evolutionary process.

  I agree it sounds stupid. Leaving to chance the survival of mankind in the face of so many unknowns, microbial and otherwise is dumb. Allowing birth defects to florish in the hopes that one in a trillion will be beneficial is ridiculous.

  But that is the very process that according to many scientists has produced the world we live in.

  You're right it is ludicrous.

  Microbes have come darned near wiping us out earlier, and it's far from impossible that they can still get the upper hand one day. Our first and last line of defence if and when that happens is modern science.

  Perhaps microbes will survive us because they are the fittest, and that is how it should be.

  who were they to turn to , why the mature elders , even better you could write to the society.. so what happened?.

  If "he likes men and big boys", what age are these "big boys"? Are they sixteen, seventeen? If so, then the elder may have acted to protect the young men in the congregation.

  While on the subject genetic enginnering (man tinkering with with genes) is the same as natural selection from my way of thinking. Many of us are at an impasse due to semantic defintions. However, having man accelerate his own evolution by means of genomic projetcs is just exactly that "natural selection". The only real difference is that we are reaching the point where we can evolve faster than ever before

  Now THAT is a scary thought! Natural selection by the use of genetic engineering is something way beyond the abilities of mankind to control, to apply responsibly, to use beneficially. Science is great, it has produced fantastic things but there has always been potential for misuse, for harm, for selfish gain etc. The potential for harm is greater than for good, IMO, when it comes to human genetic engineering.

  I do not believe in evolution, by which I mean, a process independent from an outside source ever so slowly "giving birth" on its own to all forms of life on earth. BUT, if I had to give my children and their genetic line over to either the "god" of evolution or the "god" of natural selection hurried along by genetic engineering, I would choose evolution.

  Evolution is a hit and miss sort of thing, but I'd rather chance that then trust man with such power.
