Artful, I just want to say I appreciate your approach to bible study. Your research is well-reasoned and thorough. Great job! Too bad Yardif did not mean it when he/she said he/she would ignore you.

144,000 and Rulership
by artful inwhile investigating the wts concept of "two classes of christians" - the first being a heavenly ruling class made up of the 144,000, and the second an earthly subject class - i decided to investigate the basic wts premise that all of the 144,000 are to be "rulers with christ".
those who would rule with christ - the "first resurrection".
although it could be theorized that if paul said that the "saints" or "holy ones" are to judge the world, and these are part of the "firstfruits" then the some of the 144,000 may be ruling with christ.

My bets are on therealgod never showing his face on this forum again. This kind of person doesn't listen, just talks. He could at least have read a few threads first to figure out what we are about. Goes to show there are jerks both inside and outside the society.

Is Christmas Pagan or Christian?
by whyhideit inas the christmas holiday approaches, it brings out the comments from my witness family members to attempt to belittle our practice of enjoying the holiday.
when we first left the jehovah's witnesses and decided to celebrate christmas, we still considered ourselves to be christians.
so the argument of choice from our relatives was, "how can you call yourself christians and celebrate such a pagan holiday.

My honey and I have had endless go-arounds about the origins of Christmas. He practically froths at the mouth over the arbitrary date - that it just happens to be the same date as the old Winter Solstice. I agree that the date is unlikely to be the actual anniversary of Jesus' birth, but so what? Then he froths at the mouth again. I gave him a show-stopper the other day.
Honey, why is the hall having a "special meeting" on Christmas day this year? Isn't it to give witnesses an alternative to Chrismas? Well, that's exactly why Christmas day was picked in the first place. It gave pagans an alternative away from their pagan practices.

Lefty, aka Yardif, will you at least send flowers to this woman's funeral? Because that is where she is heading. Or perhaps you can ask your wife Lefty what the appropriate response would be. She at least seems to be a sensible and compassionate woman. "In times of distress, we can also offer encouragement or perhaps consolation." WT Nov 15, Page 10, para 4.

The Ways Of A Weasel
by Yadirf ini've taken note that the person that goes by the name "outlaw" continues to post daily.
yet, he hasn't entered the thread whose title bears his very own name.
yes, conveniently, outlaw skips past a thread that calls him to account for the lie he spoke about yadirf.

I bet you have been puzzled, stefanroe, that this good, sweet young man behaves so strictly in some areas, yet lets loose in others. This is not unique amongst JW's. Whereas you as a Christian try and behave well because God is watching all the time, most JW's are far more afraid of being caught doing "wrong" by their own brothers and sisters. Your young man is far more concerned about looking good when they are watching. For you, doing right is on the foundation of loving God and loving your neighbour. For you, consequences of sin is separation from God, remedied by going to Him alone and asking forgiveness. For a JW, doing right is a complex maze of rules and regulations, based on the foundation of obeying the "Faithful and Discreet Slave". Consequences for breaking these rules is disfellowshipment, which includes separation from family and friends. The only remedy is to come begging back to the society and months of extra study. FYI, here are some disfellowshipping offences:
- Smoking
- Taking a blood transfusion
- Fornication
- Bad mouthing the Faithful and Discreet Slave, or even doubting that they are the exclusive mouthpeice for Jehovah
- Putting up Christmas lights or a Christmas tree
Note there is no distinction between "sins". Any of these carry the same weight of punishment. If this young man agrees to see you, he will be doing it behind his parent's back. It will have to be on a night he does not have study or field work. That means he is free only three evenings a week. He will lie to his parents about where his is going and what he is doing. You will not be able to visit him in his home. You will have to be very selective of the movies you go to. I doubt he would line up to watch Harry Potter, in case a member of the congregation comes by. He will likely be very uncomfortable holding your hand in the mall or other public places where he might run in to a member of the congregation. If you are remembered on Valentine's day, your birthday, or any other special event, he will do it in secret. It will be nearly impossible to have him over on Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas, because the congregation will be extra vigilant on those days.
Hey, you are young, curious, and interested in people. This fella may look interesting but he is really more work than he is worth.

question about "talking" to JW concer...
by dryology ini've been dating a jw for almost 3 1/2 years - about a month ago i found out that 3 elders from my boyfriend's kingdom hall we're going to have a meeting with my boyfriend about dating me.
when i asked why this meeting was going to take place, my boyfriend said that it was because he was dating someone who isn't a jehovah's witness.
this really hurt me, and it hurt even more when i found out that they had already talked to him once before, and he did not tell me about it.

Did I mention that I am in a similar situation? My honey and I talk about everything, so there are no surprises. There are days, though, that I wish I could kiss the society goodbye.

Ever heard the phrase, "know thy enemy"? That applies here. The WTS could become the wedge betwee you two, if you let it. It sounds like your fella is committed to you, so have a good talk with him and establish how firm is his resolve to remain with you. If he is solid, you have a keeper. Don't expect the WTS to make sense. It is a wacky religion, and it damages people's lives. It will never treat you as an equal. Never. Find out as much as you can about your "enemy", so you won't be blindsided by their poor behavior again.

Cochlear Implants Bacterial Meningitis
by Yizuman in.

Yizuman, why do you bring up this topic on an xJW forum? Wouldn't a deaf forum give you a more authoritative, balanced response?
Xander, there are emotional reasons the deaf community are suspicious of medical solutions to their disability. A couple of centuries of misguided patronizing interference by the medical community is part of it. In the US, a highly respected scientist established a program of cure and integration of deaf people in to mainstream culture. Deaf schools were set up. Chilldren were taught to lip read and speak English as best they could. English, with it's pauses, emphasis and intonations, is best understood in the hearing world. It will always be a foreign language to a deaf child. American Sign Language was discouraged, and it went underground, being passed on surreptitiously by generations of institutionalized deaf children. Countless hours were taken up with learning how to speak a language they could not hear, when these children could have been at least learning a regular curriculum. It is a sad fact that this intensive integration approach produced fewer deaf college graduates than 200 years ago.
Language is inticrately tied to a person's ability to structure their world and create an identity for themselves. It is no accident that nations form borders along language lines. That is why the deaf are a unique community, arguably more so than any other disabled group. The deaf community deserves to be consulted when well-meaning outsiders try and help.
